  1. ooooo .... yeah I never fell for that okie doke ... mostly because I went through my Dope War phase from 00-03 ... dark days man dark days ... shame I can't put my Dope Wars skills on my CV b/c I was the greatest drug pusher since Tony "Scarface" Montana and just before Marlo Stansfield (shout out to the Wire)
  2. BREAKING NEWS: (for Safferz really) ... I did a Google search and they said the Mentioned Mr. Scott-Heron ... so guess he was current & hip enough
  3. That's easy he never went platinum or even gold ... when was his last album? who was he dating? didn't stay current man!
  4. You sir ... can never work for the history channel w/that kind of mindset! ... in case anyone can't tell I DESPISE the History Channel almost as much as Cato the Elder despised the Carthaginian empire. He ended all his speeches as such: "Ceterum autem censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam". This meant "In addition, I think Carthage must be destroyed".
  5. I'm assuming none of you are going to be pop cultural historians because I see no comments on here about the Grammys. Will NO ONE care about future generations' need for our views, takes and commentary on the 2012 Grammys?
  6. I have a similar set up except it's The Onion, Fox News dot com (pretty much the same thing stuff as the Onion but w/more zingers), Deadspin, GC and alas FB (the bane of my existence). Grad school will be a challenge as I will be forced to devote less time in following all my sports teams and focusing on something that could potentially impact my future. May the recruting classes of 2013-2018 forgive me in advance!
  7. How could make such a GLARING mistake ... please turn in your history badge and gun ... you're off the case rookie As far as trivia goes ... the US Air Force got it's origins in the United States Army Signal Corps but ironically the current aviation wing of the army, United States Army Aviation Branch, is it's own independent body within the Army and not under the Signal Corps
  8. I'm new to the PhD game but the one consensus I seem to take away from everyone is that each program is like a 'snowflake' ... different ... can't judge one by the other
  9. oh how nice it would be to combine the good elements of TAship w/GAship ... :: sigh::
  10. have you bing or google?
  11. Welcome back ... I kind of took today off ... I was teaching the neighborhood youths "how to dougie" ... apparently I looked like I was convulsing from electroshock therapy ... now as far as the folks with the interviews skype/phone/in person ... don't worry too much about appearing nervous because once you get to talking about your interests your mind will take over and the nerves will fall in line ... good luck fellow academics!
  12. Did you check the timestamp? Maybe she sent it before decisions were made? There also could be the VERY real possibility that they aren't done w/decisions yet because I think I only saw 2 people say they'd been rejected outright and no one has said they were even wait-listed, which wouldn't make sense. Even if the sample pool here on grade cafe is small, you'd expect to at least see one person wait-listed and more than just 2 people rejected. Hope still exists for some Columbia apps!
  13. WOW so even at the masters level I could potentially get some teaching experience? Can that be reflected on a PhD app or is it looked down upon?
  14. Then I can't wait to see you on next month's ... and don't worry there'll be ZERO judgement from this guy ... ok maybe something said in private ... but in public? A rock of understanding will I be! ;-)
  15. I think the previous consensus was that once you are accepted the onus is on the school to sort of woo you. They make the offers etc and you can even play one school against the other. Unless of course your dream school has come a-courting, then it is a buyer's market in your case.
  16. Man you are too kind this morning however I bet New England Nat will swoop in last minute and deliver a KILLER set. No no, can't go the comedy route. I have too many detention slips in my past for "class clownery" as one teacher so helpfully put it. I have a counter-counter proposal. How about her slot be given to another African history major? BUT the caveat is it has to be someone on grad cafe and it doesn't matter if they even applied there. I wonder who THAT could be? Hmmm ... I wish that person would come forward
  17. I see I have stiff competition for corny jokes :-)
  18. I guess I'd say we'll hear from at least one more Ivy ... makes sense ... and I don't think even all the schools that have been 'heard' from are done at this point ... I don't think UCLA will announce ... but then again when I make a prediction it seems to go the opposite way soooo ... take that for what it's worth
  19. that or we don't get out much ... on an unrelated note my 21 y/o self is furiously building a time machine to come deliver a karmic beatdown for going all Greece on him and devaluing all the cool points he accrued in college
  20. wait wait wait ... what is this business about there being no money in history?!?!??! I just watched Nicholas Cage in National Treasure I & II and let me tell you what, he raked in the dough! Don't listen to tele folks! Plenty of money to be made if you do your research on the Freemasons!
  21. Thanks for sharing ... there's a reason your 1B in my books ...
  22. Well I wouldn't necessarily assume anything at this stage because they may not invite all wait listed students or even accepted students.
  23. you can stop eating it by giving it to me? I promise you I will dispatch it within minutes ... no questions asked ... no judgement passed ... you know it is the right thing to do
  24. I think these are all signs of Tuckman's stage of group development ... kind of stuck in that weird norming stage ... nerves are a little bit more frayed ... folks are starting to get tense ... that has been the beauty of this thread ... we've come together into a collective, whereby we share our triumphs and dejections ... it is difficult to celebrate when someone else gets what we wanted but at the end of the day we can learn from those who succeed ... there's no need to start off on another thread I don't think because there is valuable knowledge to be gained from those who are accepted into a school for those who aren't accepted into that school, that they may want to know about ... for what it's worth ... as for that fudge ... I know I shouldn't do this ... but um ... can we share? I promise I won't eat a lot ... just maybe half?
  25. I think quite honestly that at this stage what ever I decide to do, I will probably hold off on publication but rather pass it amongst advisors and peers to get feedback on. Then look to maybe incorporate it into a later piece of work. Also may I get a copy of the long post you wrote or is it lost to the winds of history?
