I hope this doesn't come off as rude because that is not my intention but I have to ask this question: isn't the application process subjective? I mean the schools have a weird marker of what they are looking for. Let's say you and another candidate have the exact same set up, they offer the other candidate a spot but they also want you, what are they to do? They only have one slot available? Obviously they know you are interested, isn't that the purpose of the waitlist? They want you but they have to make a seat at the table, not some sort of 'sleazy' attempt to lure you into academia.

I want to be Y this year ... I am going to go change my name to Y right now!

I believe the speculation was towards the end of next week but I could be wrong ... I'm assuming that's your #1 choice

I can see how some people choose to reapply ... I wonder if people are so adamant about going to one particular school that they reject all other apps just to reapply?

These people then are clearly sadists, because if you go through something like this, why would you want to inflict it on others? Or am I just whinning? It's like joining a fraternity and people are paddled excessively. I never personally saw the point in carrying out barbaric acts so I chose not to participate in organizations who did etc. Maybe I should rethink this?

I know there is no scientific answer to this but do you know how they rack & stack those on the wait list. Is it based on your field or just an overall stratification?

In comparison to the rest of the YAY area (as some locals refer to it), sure Oakland is cheaper, but there are plenty of little pockets that are as just as fun but not as expensive as PA like Emeryville. Overall the Bay Area is just a fun place to live. Plenty of interesting and intriguing characters.

See with the calling, I have often been told once it goes to the committee, it is poor form to call and ask about the status of your application. They do not want to encourage this behavior, so I am told, because they don't want all 400-600 applicants calling. I am sure it would easily get annoying for them

Well the not knowing sucks and the rejections probably sucks even more, but the best part of not having a decision in hand means you still have a fighting chance!

As far as the Ivies go I would probably expect only Princeton to have anything this week leaving Harvard, Dartmouth & Cornell to deliver info next week

I say keep your hopes up even IF you don't make it in b/c you have already built up a rapport w/your POI and you can still reapply IF that need occurs ... but yes keep hope alive

LOL I did but the engineering professors put me to sleep so after 2 weeks of trying I had to get out for my own sanity but don't worry when I go work for the history channel making lies we'll see who has the last laugh! J/K I don't hate myself enough to ever work for the history channel

I was going to say if you were close you could email then but now that I think about it, let the process play out ... most of these people who received emails said they got it from the POIs ... now I have only seen one person say they've been rejected so right now you're Schrödinger's cat ... you are both in and you are out ... I know it doesn't help but tomorrow is here now so keep hope alive!
