  1. Oh I would never wish for anyone to burn out or leave but I have a feeling one or two people might take your message as a sign of doom and gloom, making themselves get all bummed out over the weekend. But I respectfully defer to your knowledge of the place, since you're already there.
  2. Hey Nat ... out of curiosity what about the other cohorts? Have they thinned out? Gotta give some of these folks some hope
  3. Those drips are starting to slowly become a steady gush ... soon it'll be a torrent ... all in the space of 14 days (give or take)
  4. Man for you Hogwarts applicants ... I hope those Owls have left b/c I hear the weather is going to get pretty crummy over that side of the world next week
  5. wow this thread went very silent
  6. Well we're in that window where moves are being made so I guess if we could get feedback from folks who have posted updates on facebook, that would be nice
  7. emeF hang in there, it's almost getting to that time but the only thing I can personally tell you is to remain optimistic and have a backup plan just in case plan A doesn't totally pan out.
  8. Well hello there Singwaya. I'm also interested in Africa, primarily west Africa and the pre-Colonial/Colonial era (i.e., 1600-1900). I want to focus on the interaction between the Africans and the Europeans, more so prior to the Congress of Berlin.
  9. Well good morning to you all grad cafe humanities history posters! What an exciting 12 hours I see! A whole lot has transpired since I left in the afternoon. The game's afoot!
  10. I was told Oxford does some skype interviews but that probably doesn't help you since I don't see you listing them
  11. Congrats Safferz!!!!!
  12. Well don't worry, even if they try to reach you I'm sure they'll leave a message. Go have fun! Unwind and hit up the slopes!
  13. Wait I thought that was a social faux to call the schools after a certain time? What's the ruling on this?
  14. I wish I could commission someone to sing in an operatic manner, announcing to the world my acceptance, then I'd post it on youtube, which I'd then post on facebook .... if we're talking outlandish fantasy
  15. Under review is better than being rejected Supernovasky
  16. Man Yale is efficient w/their timing but tha really does suck for the person who got rejected ... I know not all the schools I applied to have even met yet so there's that comforting thought for them that there are other schools still making decisions as we speak
  17. I guess I can enjoy the exhortation of Virgil when he wrote "forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit"
  18. I guess it's too late for me to open an academia account?
  19. I'd like so see them out-insane us next year! Although I do hope they get a StrangeLight type who brings a bit of "been there, done that" perspective into the conversation from time-to-time. I wonder if that person will get eviscerated like SL did yesterday for his one post.
  20. I suggest for naming purposes either you go with acceptance, grad cafe, SOP or POI. Throwing those out there now!
  21. If I may chime in w/a former child-of-a-PhD student's perspective. I think it's been already stated but I don't think the move is going to be that bad on the kid. Like all moves, it sucks losing friends but I remember when we moved, were living on campus and there were a lot of other kids around whose parents were doing similar things, so we formed our community of sorts. There were moments I could tell sucked for my mom because she had the stress of trying to be a parent and being a student at the same time, i.e., making it to silly school plays, taking me to piano recitals, sports and the like, when I'm sure she really could've used a night in. As far as the money situation, I never knew we were poor (at the time) till she told me years later. Somehow food magically appeared and I maigcally got cloths, granted it was never the 'cool' kids cloths I always wanted. Not to say that all kids' experince will be the same but I promise you, your kid will be fine if he can find one or two other kids to bond with. Kids are weird that way
  22. Goldie to the rescue!
  23. Good Lord! I did not do due dilegence as far as researching funded MAs. Once you start hearing 'oh they rarely fund MAs' at xyz schools, you sort of assume it's a trend and allow yourself to be moved into direction. No excuses.
  24. Man where have you been? You are that calming (somewhat Jeremiah-live even) voice of reason. If it happens, it happens: if it doesn't it, doesn't.
  25. Thanks Justin ... I always do let little things & doubt creep into my mind.
