  1. I wonder how many other schools have such a set up

ruh roh! we're getting into that political debate territory!
  3. Hi: looking more so for advise more than anything. Can anyone speak in depth about the waitlisting process? I have seen a few threads that have talked about it, I want to get feedback from those who have gone through it. Thanks!
  4. How rare these internal fellowships?

    MA vs PhD

Thanks for the clarification ... you just get so many differing views on a message board such as this so I hope my comments didn't come off too strong either
  6. Come on now ADMITedlyLucky ... if you spell "you're" as "your" then there's NO way Yale will admit you ... I keed I keed ... but in all honesty congrats to CPetersen the most envied person on this forum right now ... how did you get so lucky? I guess now the angst is going to be ratcheted up to a new level ... a lot of the schools I've contacted have said their ADCOMs weren't meeting yet b/c school is barely starting so for some the wait will be even worse (looking at you Ivy kids) ... the game's afoot!
  7. So you're telling me I need to clean up my online presence? I don't want these schools googling me. My school work & personal life are two seperate entites I would think
  8. Thank you very much for that! As far as the rankings thing go, I kind of assumed you were using the USN&WR but I didn't want to be presumptiuous. I do wish there was a standard ranking used across the board because a lot of average state schools will jockey to claim they are a top tier school but according to one of the various rankings, they are barely in the middle of the pack.

    MA vs PhD

Getting an MA still doesn't guarantee you a seat at the table. A PhD candidate isn't necessarily better because they have an MA in history, IMO. Then again I don't have an AM so I might be biased in that line of thinking, but I have read the posts of some of the people who have been admitted and some have said they did not have an MA.
  10. I asked if it was broken: outlook not so good ... so I guess we can all rest at ease ... the magic 8-ball has lied!

    Wait Listed!

I hope not either ... never thought turning 30 would become a life altering event ... who knew
  12. We're all on tenterhooks holdon, everyone will have one of "those" moments ... it's a competitive process & we're all competing for such a small pot ... tensions are bound to boil over at some point ... better to get it out of the way early I say

    Wait Listed!

I wonder if you get a liitle too old in the tooth that also becomes a detriment down the road?
  14. I agree and disagree: there are things you have learned up to this point that you wish had known before and obviously you won't know everything TILL you get the results obviously. The debrief process never ends!
  15. Worst case scenario, I hear Oxford's deadline isn't till Jan 20th so if you need something else to occupi your time with
  16. Isidore, I have a couple of questions for you: what rankings were you using (is there even a standard for the rankings?) and if you don't mind me asking, how significant of a foreign language background does one generally require? Thanks
  17. If it is not profitable for the universities to fund someone not looking for the academic track wouldn't that person be able to still find funding elsewhere? My question is more so geared towards admittance rather than funding, which seems to be the tack people are taking or am I just not reading this correctly?
  18. I totally agree that academia is as real as someone else working in banking, etc b/c they are providing something else to enhance society at large. That was attempt at humor that fell flat, mea culpa to one and all

    Wait Listed!

I like that strategy ... anything in particular you would advocate as a plan B or C?

    Wait Listed!

then follow up question: when will you know there isn't anything else you can do? I mean you're finished at undergrad & those stats aren't going to change much, is there a sign or something? I know silly question but doesn't hurt to ask

    Occupy History

I know this point has been beaten worse than a child in a third world sweatshop but the job of the historian is to report things objectively. You give the facts and data as they occurred, with no slant, like a journalist is supposed to do. With OWS, the historian will be tempted to make a comparison but that is the slippery slope in history where we can lose focus and resort to simplistic assessments. I remember reading in Time Magazine a while back ago comparing the Arab Spring to the Revolutions of '48 and sure there are some tangentially similar issues at hand, but the uniqueness of revolution shouldn't be discarded so you can make a cheap point. Now this isn't to say that you can't take the lessons learned from '48 to use as a road map to predict how the Arab Spring could shape out. A historian can look back and say, x followed this path and we can make a similar assumption about Y because of this, that, and the proverbial third. Flat out contrasting for contrasting sake to me is a dangerous path because a lazy assessment can be made of somethings that are wholly unrelated. For example, if you watch anything on that anathema of a network, the "History" Channel, this seems to be their bread & butter. The sad thing is they even get accredited historians to spew about certain pablum that is then accepted by the mainstream as having historical merit. Thus in my estimation, OWS shouldn't present a problem as far as historical documentation because it was important enough of a milestone in the US (to some people) that it would warrant mentioning in any decent assessment of the early 21st century.
  22. The question then I have is this: what is the downside for the schools you are applying to, if you aren't interested in the academic track? Is it something that you would need to openly discuss with them from the get-go or is it something that does not need to be divulged?

WOW, it seems that a few of you had to apply several years in a row? How often does that occur? Is that the norm to have to apply & reapply?
  24. Oh no sir ... no diver here ... a poor driver maybe but a diver? alas no
  25. I have grudgingly come to love the debriefing process because it makes thing so much clearer. Checklist discipline is something I NEVER thought I would be a fan of such things but once you drink that kool-aid, it is too late for you. I also want to clarify that my snarky-sounding comments weren't meant to dissuade others from commenting or positing their theories, I was just amused by the disparate viewpoints and at this stage of the game, I always feel a little humor lightens the situation or maybe that's just me?
