  1. Ahhh! Finally. Fingers crossed for an acceptance AND some form of funding.
  2. "That's not funny."
  3. Following the trend of "Shit (Insert Group Here) Say," what is some shit that sociologists say?
  4. I never participated because I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. She surprisingly got a lot of people into it though. Also common: "Should I take notes?"
  5. I think it's great that you're not obsessing over it. I personally just have a tendency to obsess over things, which doesn't help with applying to graduate school and wondering where I'll be accepted.
  6. Reading articles on Cracked.com Watching ALL the queer movies on Netflix Cuddling with my cats Apply for jobs Figure out my backup plan in case I don't get into graduate school Think of tattoo ideas Listen to music Get in shape Write essays, short stories, poems, personal narratives, etc
  7. My roommate in the dorms my Freshman year didn't want to drink alcohol underage, so she suggested we play energy drink pong instead of beer pong...
  8. I'll be 23 by the time I enter graduate school (well, if I get accepted....)
  9. I stayed in state for my undergrad, so I never got my adventure unfortunately. :/
  10. I'm actually thinking of packing up, spending every penny I have on moving to NYC, and see what happens. If I can't go to graduate school, I want an adventure.
  11. Me too, actually.
  12. I guess I'm not really sure how to get started in that? Most entry level nonprofit jobs in the Seattle area have you do canvassing, which I absolutely loathe. I'm really into sex workers rights, anti-racism and sexism work, and queer homeless youth. I'd love to do something useful but actually get paid for it. :/
  13. Well, I was mostly hoping for suggestions that were non-academia related. I was hoping for something else to focus on if I find myself unable to "break in" to the field. I find myself drawn to documentary filmmaking, so I can still educate people (but obviously in a different way). Education is really important to me, but I don't want to teach at the k-12 level (I don't really like children). I also know that documentary filmmaking is a far stretch, so I was trying to come up with other ways to do something similar that may or may not require a postgraduate degree. Any thoughts?
  14. As I'm worrying more and more about possibly not getting into graduate school, I'm trying to think of my Plan B. I'm not really sure I have one yet, so I was wondering what everyone else's Plan B is? I would like some ideas or a place to start.
  15. I think it wouldn't hurt you to at least apply to other schools and see what happens. After you've seen where you've been accepted and where you've gotten funding, then you decide if you want to stay or go.
  16. @sciencegirl Part of the reason I decided to pursue a graduate degree is that all of the great academics have started where we are now. Even if it's a long and hard process (and hopefully rewarding), you never know where you will be unless you try. Whether or not you get a job on a tenure-track, at least you gave it a try and hopefully had a good time of it.
  17. I found this post helpful, but now I feel quite doubtful about my future... What other jobs in academia can you do with a PhD in sociology?
  18. I get the law school one all the time! Everyone thinks I should go into politics, which is flattering, but... no thanks. Not for me.
  19. Most common question I get: "Are you sure???" Um, yeah, I am sure, or I wouldn't be applying.
  20. I didn't really want to live in Indiana anyway.
  21. I just got mine as well. I expected it after not being asked for a phone interview. I was a little upset at first because it's my first notification and rejection, but it's not even in my top 5 choices.
  22. Apart from the whole obstacle course thing, the hardest part was being confident enough to even apply.
  23. Then no one has heard from them yet. Keep checking the results from time to time.
  24. I decided to take a year off to gain some "life experiences," and thus far have only experienced this terrible economy -- I can't even seem to get a job in retail. I was too burnt out to go straight into graduate school, but now I wish I had. Unless you have a degree that would be competitive in this economy, I would go straight into graduate school.
  25. You should check the Results Survey.
