I think it's a growing field, which is why there are so many people going into it. -

Hmm... I don't know about you all, but my university sent me an information packet about this stuff. I am somewhat surprised that they're not going to babysit me throughout the entire process (I think someone gave me the impression they would), but I am glad to have an information packet that lays it out for me in detail. If anyone is interested, I could post scans of my info packet if that would help, although there is probably information online. I totally sympathize with this though! I have always lived within 1-3 hours of the Canadian border, so going to Canada never seemed like a big deal. However, the prospect of being denied entry when I hardly feel like an international student is terrifying. Does anyone else feel weird about being considered an international student? I feel like I hardly count, especially since Victoria is very similar in terms of weather, climate, and foliage as Seattle (and, of course, language ).

I agree with those who are saying to go to UCSF! You love SF and have the potential to work with a few different people on an area you are interested in -- which would not be the case at Brown. You can always keep in contact with the professor at Brown -- maybe you will have a chance to work with him someday.

Well, at this point, I know I'd be incredibly unhappy if I didn't get into graduate school. I haven't started my program yet, but I am excited to begin.

I'm happy to see threads like this. I've yet to start my M.A. program, but I was worried it would be all doom and gloom. I'm excited, and I hope that feeling stays!

While I am developing a niche for myself, I don't really think it's fair to expect others to do so (even if it would beneficial for them in the long run). There are so many issues that are important and need attention, and I don't think I could blame someone else for not having a niche of their own. Personally, while I love my niche and am very passionate about it, I think it would be unrealistic to expect me to stay in this niche for the rest of my life. I'm only 22, and my interests will change as I have more/different life experiences. I think that is natural.

Any one who got the offer from Maryland decided not to go?

While I can understand and sympathize with your situation, I don't think it's appropriate to rush others with their decision-making process. Just be patient, and you will know soon enough. Posts like these make me uncomfortable because I know that, personally, I need time to mull over my offers, and I wouldn't like someone to push me to make a decision faster than I had planned. As you know, this is a large decision to make. People will be accepting or declining their offers within the next few weeks. I know that this has been a long and grueling application process for all of us, but a few more weeks is not very long in the grand scheme of things. I suggest indulging in your favorite hobbies or guilty pleasures in the meantime. -

I'm lucky enough that a weekend visit to the area is feasible for me (however, I do have to cross the Canadian border, hop on the ferry, and take a little drive -- and this doesn't include waiting times!). I will likely do this at the beginning/middle of summer to scope things out and hopefully sign a lease. I think if I were to move across the country, I'd probably try to stay in a hostel for a week and quickly find a place to lease if that were possible. I know if I were to move that far, I would probably just bring a couple of large suitcases and call it a day.
