  1. Depending on your field of study there are great jobs overseas... I have friends who haven't heard or have only gotten rejections back and they are looking at state dept jobs, UN jobs or just jobs overseas. In their cases, the jobs would boost their CVs since they're related to the field of study they want to do - for when they reapply next year. Good Luck everyone - there's hope yet!!!
  2. I'll just add my voice to the choir... I have a few professors whom I've asked for LORs for various things: fellowships, scholarships and now, grad school. One of them basically said once he did my first letter, he just needs to see an updated CV (if there's anything new) and he can plug it right in in about 3 minutes. So I agree, if they really are supportive of you, they'll be happy to write (yet another) LOR. Good Luck!
  3. Oh my gosh.. that is just awful... Was there any kind of recompense for this??? I just don't understand why overseas degrees aren't accredited the same way.. And how could they not know this when transcripts and all that are sent with applications? I'm so sorry contretemps.. so awful.. Fingers crossed for all of us that this won't happen...
  4. Stats are just the proverbial "foot in the door" - And depending on the strength of the rest of your application (your field experience, publications, SOP, research interests, writing sample etc), your stats might become less and less important. Try not to worry: your stats are what they are - wait and see what happens Good Luck
  5. contretemps - Do you mind sharing some of the reasons why? Or rather, was it an error on their part? On what kind of grounds can they do that?
  6. For my interview earlier this year I wore: grey slacks, a white collared blouse, a grey vest and a burgundy velvet blazer. A little make up, and a minimal jewelry.. and chunky oxfords. Other girls wore knee length dresses with cardigans; slacks and shirts... Then for the evening, we were in more casual clothing: sweaters and jeans... And the same for lunch the following day.
  7. gexinhmily - Congratulations! It sounds like you're admitted! Your POI not responding right away probably just means he's busy... if you are looking for confirmation or have questions about the program, you might email the graduate office or the program coordinator.

  9. Hmm.. My personal opinion is that if they don't do interviews then they probably won't grant your request for one.. however, you could ask if you could visit their school and meet with the POIs... it would be an informal kind of meeting, rather than an "interview". It would allow you to build a rapport with the POIs and leave a good impression on them...
  10. It sounds like your polymer course is cross-listed as a combined UG and Grad course. I take a lot of these courses as an UG and then do an honors contract to do the graduate work; I can't list them on my transcript as a grad (500+) course, but they are helping me graduate with honors so that probably helps. At my UG uni, as an UG I can DO the grad coursework but I can only get UG credit for it. However, it might not help you if you aren't doing well in the class. For example, if you did the course as a UG and got an A, that is better than doing the course with the addl grad work under an honors contract and getting a B.
  11. Your question might be answered indirectly as you interview: you might be able to pick up on ultra religious or non-religious sentiment. It's that whole reading "between the lines" kind of thing. I agree with snes in that the university (adminstration and perhaps faculty) probably won't answer your question without keeping in mind their own agenda. The profs might really not be at "liberty" to say whether the stereotype is true or not, for political reasons. And so, asking the current grads is the better option.
  12. I agree. You're not being pesky, after all you were told you have an interview... perhaps this POI is just an absentminded person and is the sort to need reminding..
  13. If you have gotten a letter of acceptance via email or post, and you've accepted it officially, then they can't back out unless there've been some serious errors made... what sort of "promise" did you receive?
  14. Actually, reading ahead might help. I mentioned to one of my POI at the interview that I was planning on reading a lot over the summer before the Fall semester and he agreed and thought this was a great idea. Then he offered to help me make my reading list. Reading ahead could really help with the qualifying exams once they roll around...

  16. Yes I agree; she might have gotten busy, or fallen sick (it is winter after all), or something completely unrelated to the admissions process. I would say that if you don't hear from her by Friday, then perhaps a follow up email over the weekend will be OK. Most graduate admin committees are meeting this week and so decisions probably won't be available until next week anyway...
  17. Oh - This was super helpful for me - it's not comprehensive but it does provide good background info ie. when you forget what an agnate is and just need to know so you can move on in the reading: The Dictionary of Anthropology - Thomas Barfield Here is the description on Amazon: Edited by Barfield (chair, anthropology, Boston Univ.), who called on some 125 anthropologists to provide both historical and contemporary definitions of anthropological terms, this dictionary is yet another in a recent spate of anthropology reference tools. Coverage is broad, touching on key concepts, theories, methodologies, and ethnographic and thematic research, though definitions for any religious traditions are lacking. While entries vary in length and depth, many short entries are enhanced with cross references, and there is a cumulative bibliography. With more than 500 entries, including 42 biographies, this dictionary invites comparison with the Encyclopedia of Social and Cultural Anthropology (LJ 2/1/97), which has 231 subject entries, 238 short and five long biographies, and a 600-term glossary. The encyclopedia, whose entries are expansive, provides meatier discussions and, with the inclusion of the glossary, serves as a dictionary as well. It emphasizes and treats some concepts somewhat differently, covering major religious traditions, geographical areas, and regional anthropological traditions, while entries for such subjects as poverty and social Darwinism are found only in the dictionary. The encyclopedia has far more biographies, but the treatments in the dictionary are fairly substantial. Both provide minimal coverage of archaeology and biological and linguistic anthropology.
  18. Congrats! I'm there now as an UG
  19. It sounds like burnout... and depression as a result of it. *Hugs* ioatc ... Perhaps you need some emotional support from outside of your department, in the way of people who will just be good friends. They might not be able to help you academically but it sounds as though the real issue is not academic but emotional/psychological. Have you made any friends outside of your department? or in the community? Perhaps it will help to take a small mental break and try to find people to hang out - you'll feel and BE less lonely. Do you like to dance? You can find a local salsa night or swing dance thing, or if you like to game I'm sure there's a local community for that too. Hobbies aren't just to fill time, they are also avenues towards a social connection. If you are wrapped up in your school work, how about a study group that is NOT of your department, but in a related one or an interdisciplinary field ie. the Asian-american interdisciplinary dept? ie. a group of kids at your school - perhaps UGs - who will not be part of the back-stabbing circle. Your uni's campus activities board or club might have some advice on how to meet other grads or students in general who are interested in the same things as you. You sound like you do want to stay in your field and yes, for most of us, the job market sucks right now and probably will for awhile. That is beyond our control at this point and so IMO we shouldn't really worry about it too much.
  20. zero luck
  21. Huh. So stipends are apparently taxable (in other states). Oh, fooey. I googled that after I read this post... Well, health insurance should be paid for by the university as mentioned above - usually if there is a tuition waiver/stipend, it's included in the offer.. unless of course, you have dependents. Then well, hopefully your spouse or ex-spouse can pay the insurance on them(selves). There are also loans and some financial aid for grad students. Its not much but should help defray some of these extra costs of living... And to be fair, it isn't $2000.month - it's a 9 month stipend so it's actually $1500 a month... This was ONE reason I didn't apply to any of the UC schools...
  22. It IS possible to annotate the PDFs (and kindle books) and highlight sections as well. The keyboard works like any other qwerty keyboard and isn't difficult to navigate. But it is simple and there are no "bells n whistles". I find that taking notes while reading can be disruptive and usually my notes during reading are very scattered so I still use a piece of paper to jot down random words/phrases that strike me as I read, then take more details in my notebook on the second or third reading of the article.
  23. I got an email from my current UG dept office - I had applied to my UG uni's terminal MA program as my "safety school" - and they wanted to know if I had already accepted at this other place because they are making decisions this week. I hadn't officially withdrawn my application from my "safety school" but since I am attending there now as a UG, all the faculty knows where I got accepted. We're very familial. Anyway, that email got me all in a tizzy again so I went to the online application where I had made my acceptance to the PhD program (to double check) I got accepted into and my acceptance letter was gone!! I couldn't tell what had happened. So I emailed the graduate office and they were so nice. They shot me back an email that basically said, "Don't worry. We got your acceptance and you are locked in. Now, breathe. Deep. That's a good lass." *pat*pat* LOL You guys are all right. We will never be completely free of these feelings of inadequacy or worry. Maybe that kind of "perfectionism" will make us good scholars.
  24. Congratulations!!! That sounds like GREAT news! Maybe she is waiting to email you once she has 100% approval from her dept chair or the adcomm or graduate office (about funding) or something like that.
  25. Not the original nook, but the nook color was awful for me. I traded it in and got a Kindle Keyboard (the Kindle 3) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kindle keyboard. In fact, over 99% of my readings on it are in PDF - you can switch the font, size and orientation so that the pdf is very readable. And it's super light so my wrists don't get tired (I like reading in bed with my "book" propped up in my hands, while I lie down). As mandabeth said, you can email pdfs to yourself, but I just connect my kindle by USB and download all my pdfs that way. What's ncie is that if you have a pdf you like especially, you can email it to yourself and ask Amazon to make it into a kindle book. It might cost you - I think a few cents per mb? - but I've never had to do that. Also, a lot of my advanced readings for class are available as kindle books and MUCH cheaper than "real" books. ..my $0.10..
