  1. Ha ha! Wow, that is truly a terrifying thought! I remember speaking with my POI at one of my top choice schools back in October. They told me then to keep in mind that, of the 400 applications the program receives, 30-40 would be for my subfield alone...and they could only accept maybe 3 people. So that was nice to hear...and begin obsessing about! Heh!
  2. First week of classes for me. Going well so far, but it's hard to focus on my readings when all I want to do is check my email and application statuses! I think I'll be much more at ease once I've gotten even one acceptance - I need to get my act together, so I can write my darn thesis! Wow, what a lot of stress! Congrats on finishing your applications, and good luck with your comps - I know you'll kick those exams' butts!
  3. Just found an Android app called "Whogotin: Grad School." I may have to download just to give myself something else to obsessively check 20 times a day!
  4. No idea on your first question - I think each school has a different procedure, which they should outline for you once you have decided to accept their admissions offer. And yep, we do - unfortunately - get taxed on our stipends. The amount, though, should depend on your total income (for me, never very much). And if your stipends don't fully cover the cost of your tuition and fees, you may be entitled to a tax break here and there (since you're trying to obtain a higher degree, paying for it yourself, etc.). Hope that's helpful!
  5. Congratulations! I don't have too much advice, having never been on an interview at a prospective school before. What NewEnglandNat and hanbran say is very useful. I would also recommend talking with the grad students already there about the logistics of attending that program. Based on my MA experiences, I've been careful to ask about the ILL system, ease of navigating the university's bureaucracy, intradepartmental communication, competency of the financial aid office, etc. Sometimes the small things can really make life hellish, so I always ask if there was "anything surprising" or "anything they would warn someone" about XYZ-School.
  6. So true. I think I threw my sanity out the window when I signed up for grad school. This waiting business has taken it to a whole new level, though...
  7. The same thing happened to me this week with my CUNY application. Just about had a heart attack when I saw the email in my inbox; the subject heading just said: "Graduate Application." I was ridiculously excited, then ridiculously disappointed when it turned out just to be a confirmation that they received all my materials... Welcome, indeed! Hang tough - we'll know about our applications one way or another very soon.
  8. Back online, after the stomach flu that wouldn't quit! Only bright spot: it prevented a LOT of my daily admissions obsessing. :P

ugh - glad you're looking on the bright side!

  9. Seconded, absolutely. You're one of the nicest folks on this forum. I am sending prayers and positive thoughts your way. I'm sure you will make your colleague proud at your next program and beyond!
  10. Good idea on the magic 8 ball - may have to give that a try, myself! Er... Your stats are really great! I bet you'll get into all the public schools and either Harvard or Yale.
  11. Tough to say...I know UT is super competitive. But I believe in the power of positive thinking! I bet you get into both, or at least accepted at TX State and waitlisted at UT. We're definitely family - bonded by ties of anxiety and confusion! Your application sounds great. I bet you get into at least half of your programs and waitlisted at MIT (knowing nothing about your field - heh!). Impressive credentials! I bet you get into four and waitlisted at one. Best of luck to everyone!
  12. I'm so sorry to hear it, PhDreams!
  13. Ha ha! Thin crust Neapolitan style with anchovies, kalamata olives, goat cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes.
  14. I'll give it a whirl! Undergrad: Pitt GPA: 3.7 MA: U of Houston GPA: 4.0 GREs: 640 V, 760 Q, 5.0 AW Languages: German, Norwegian, Spanish LORs: all enthusiastic, from well-established profs Applying: two privates, 8 states Self-prediction: accepted to 3, waitlisted at 1, rejected from 6 ...What do you fine folks think? Best of luck to us all!
  15. I've gotten several emails from my POI at one of my top choice programs, but nothing official yet. Hoping to hear something by the end of January, or early February! This wait is driving me bonkers! :-S

  17. Seconded! I think this is a very good sign. Congrats and best of luck!
  18. I am right there with you, amlobo! I certainly feel less crazy chatting with everyone here...so - while it might not be the healthiest or most productive use of my time - I will continue this obsession at least until I hear back from my programs! Heh - and just like you, I've been compulsively combing through the results for my field. If I can't know the results yet, I'd at least like to know when I'm going to know the results!!
  19. The only one I've had was a nightmare. I dreamed that I was a couple hours late submitting one piece of my application - the adcomm was meeting that very day somehow...and they magically decided every single rejection and admission that day. I ended up getting rejected from this school, which I might have a real chance of getting into. I'm hoping things turn out rather differently in real life this/next month!
  20. Heck, I'm hoping for even 1/10! If I'm not crazy (and I swear I'm not!), then you're not either. As long as you applied only to programs where you could make it work, I think you're good to go! My thoughts, exactly, Bearcat! Man, what an idea! I have a never-fails recipe for Norwegian apple cake. Wish I could send a sample of that around to the adcomms...and it wouldn't be bribery at all! Surely sending baked goods would just demonstrate how very creative and well-rounded we are as people/potential grads?
  21. This is the crazy and horrible - I'm so sorry this woman did this to you! I'm sure your writing sample and application as a whole will refute her claim about your inability to make historical arguments. At least now you know what she really thinks about you, I guess? And when you get into your dream program, the joke will be on her!
  22. Absolutely! On one hand, it would be nice to have interview invitations to give us some sense of progress/feedback. On the other, I just imagine how stressed out I'd be if I had to contend with interviews on top of everything else! :-S Congratulations and best of luck to sansao all you interviewing science folks!
  23. Ha ha! I have a copy of my enormous Excel spreadsheet saved in my email, so I can look it up on campus in case I don't have my laptop on hand. You're not alone! I'm ridiculously happy other people are as neurotic (and by that I mean super duper well-prepared for any situation!) as I am. Seriously! This entire process (all the time, money, and anxiety) will have been worth it if I can just get into one program.
  24. I made a spreadsheet, too! The earliest I've seen for mine is January 21st, so I feel almost justified checking now that it's January. Heh!
