Hi everyone!  Just found this website and thought I'd join in.  I've applied for PhD programs in Classics at Cornell and Harvard, ISAW at NYU, AAMW at UPenn and IPCAA at Michigan.  I did my undergrad at UWO in Canada and my Masters in Scotland so the American system is very daunting!  Anxiously awaiting responses from the schools but UPenn is my dream.

Actually I want to add now that I'm taking a break from work. You can get to Detroit with the Detroit Connector, a bus that costs like $6 each way and runs pretty regularly. The centre of town is indeed walkable (you must have been in a different part of town, probably down Washtenaw Ave) and transit isn't bad. Obviously snow affects it but honestly even in terrible snowstorms I've been able to get around fine. Sometimes it is more reliable than the TTC lol. Ubers are also not bad here and since this isn't a huge place it's not expensive to take an Uber across town.
Aside from promo-ing my own place (though the deal is really good), the area where I live, the Old West Side, doesn't seem to be home to many undergrads. There are a lot of neighbourhoods like this - Water Hill is another. Those are some good neighbourhoods if you want to avoid the fraternity/ sorority kids, be in walking distance of downtown and everything central, and also afford your rent. Burns Park also seems to be popular and a lot of the streets off Packard too (though you're more likely to get undergrads down that way).

PhD Classics at Michigan = no interview. Bridge MA = I'm unsure. IPCAA (Classical arch) = definitely an interview over the visiting weekend. Hope this is useful for others in the thread.

I got married and I haven't changed mine, for multiple reasons, but this is 100% one of them! My parents both graduated from high school but that's it. I'm a first gen - some cousins after me ended up going to college after I started, but no one has gone this far. It can be hard sometimes, and a bit alienating. Weird to have friends whose grandparents have PhDs while mine were farmers who couldn't read. I'm doing this for them!

The Twitter thread in question was about a meeting between Chairs of PhD-offering departments and Liberal Arts College Classics department Chairs.
A few schools are finally (thankfully) starting to opt to remove GRE requirements now that many graduate faculties have removed their own overarching requirement for them. Watch this (or their) space(s).
The transcript and GRE cost is absolutely criminal especially for international students trying to apply to American universities. I paid over 200 USD for my GRE. I remember Stanford's application cost was 120 USD. Hard when you don't have USD.
Trust that these conversations are happening! (Mostly led by graduate students.)

I know I'm late responding to this, but I need to echo this comment about time - even my in-person interview at Michigan was only 15 minutes long, and my Skype pseudo-interview with AAMW was a 15-minute conversation with one faculty member too. That's pretty standard in terms of time.

*pops head in* Hey! I'm in a Classical Arch PhD program so let me know if you have any questions. I do like to make an appearance on the board from time to time to see if anyone applying is in need of some info. Good luck with your apps

Michigan hosted their prospectives a couple weekends ago. I believe there’s an unofficial waitlist in case any accepted students don’t matriculate, but it might be a while (if ever) before there’s any movement on that front.

3 days late on this but congratulations on everyone for surviving this trying process!!!! Be sure to check out some of the city guides on the forum as you prepare for your move. The Ann Arbor thread really helped me, especially when I was looking for a place to live but couldn't make it down to A2 to check places out.

    Happy April 15th everyone!
I just got back from visiting Tulane and couldn't be happier with the program and members of the department. I'm so glad I saw a gradcafe post urging people to apply to their program a while back!

This advice is all great and also the same advice I was given last year when I was in the same position. I emailed a great program to turn down their offer and everyone was so lovely; I received multiple warm and effusive emails wishing me the best of luck, and some even passed very flattering words about me on to a former professor of mine from my alma mater whom I see frequently (who, of course, told me). They won't be upset and this is all part of the process for them as well as for applicants.

Hey @terraaurea - as someone who was in a v similar situation (no money, parents in huge debt, recently lost our home, etc) I agree - go where the money is, go where there is funding. You won't regret that in the slightest. It will allow you to concentrate on your work much better as well. There might be people out there who tell you that education is priceless and, sure, I guess so in some ways, but people who make this claim usually don't know what it's like to be poor/ in debt/ have terrible credit. Do what you can to keep yourself in the best position. Plus, FSU is a fantastic program! This sounds like a great option

Still shaking because of the good news: I got into UChicago! The program is perfect  And now I can officially start quitting my job, too!!
@aspasiahaha I don't have any insider knowledge, but if you haven't gotten an interview request from Columbia yet, I think you may be on a waitlist. I interviewed for CLST last week and was told that the acceptances (etc) would be sent out in 2ish weeks. Weird things happen, though! By the way, feel free to dig into your anxieties if you'd like -- we're all here to support each other in this stressful endeavor.

Thanks all!  My wife and I visited Toronto (on holiday) for the first time this past fall, and loved it.  have a phone call later with morning with the Graduate Coordinator to discuss the details of the offer.
Congrats to @Archaic_Smile on UNC, @ploutarchos on OSU, and @likeavirgil on the interviews!  It's good to see this thread booming with good news.

I'm the IPCAA interview. It was an invitation to the weekend on campus, sent over email by the prof I was in touch with last year (when I was unsuccessful in the process). Very excited and nervous! So happy to make it even this far this year.

Not research, but something related to our interests. As a homeschooling father, I'm getting three of my kids (ages: 7, 7, 9) started in Pharr's Homeric Greek. My 9-year just audited my college course last spring and was my top performer (he obviously had an advantage of learning everyday at home with dad). Some wonderful news is there's a new edition of Pharr's book edited by Paula Debnar which makes it much more appropriate for starters.
This challenge for learning may seem audacious, but it's not. Some 150 years ago this was normal stuff for kids, and in our generation a lot of homeschoolers are now rediscovering what levels kids are really capable of performing at. When my son was 7 he read both of Homer's epics (Fagles) and Virgil (Fitzgerald). At 8, he read the Oxford History of the Classical World cover to cover. Now he's almost finished with Don Quixote (all 900+ pages in the Penguin Classics series). I think he knows more about the Romans than I do. My 7-year old daughter is currently reading Jane Austen's Emma with me, and we're having so much fun together loving Austen's wit. A 7-year old reading Austen with pleasure, imagine that! Not Dick & Jane. All three kids have been doing Mandarin too, and with my youngest son (7 yrs), since he's adopted from China, I've been trying to help him learn about his heritage. He's getting excited about being Chinese and loves everything pertaining to the culture.
Anyhow, I better stop here, but for you future parents, I encourage you to consider homeschooling as a viable option. You'll love it as much as I do.

Thanks for asking about Posselius - he wrote letters, orations, and other works, in both Greek and Latin. Greek wasn't written to the extent that Latin was during the Renaissance. I've also been having a look at some of his funeral poetry. The plague was devastating, and he responded to the deaths of so many friends and students.
You've got a great deal of work to keep you going in the summer. How are you keeping up that incredible pace?

What are you working on this summer?
I'm finishing some odds and ends from the spring, and then I'm starting to do research on a renaissance author named Posselius. I have a few other unformed ideas. I should probably decide and stick with one at a time!
