  1. And what if we've already called the program we applied to several weeks ago and they said "you should hear in a couple weeks"? Because I think it's probably overkill if I call again... and this is the only program I've applied to, so I can't even use the excuse of informing another program!
  2. haha I have the opposite problem. I told myself I wasn't going to tell anyone about it in case I didn't get in, but I couldn't suffer the process in silence. I hope your friends are very excited for you! Just be excited and act as though it was never a problem, that there's no guilt, and the rest will follow.
  3. Everyone is obsessing about the april 15th deadline and it makes my heart palpitate thinking about how that means NOTHING to me. It could still be ages before I know anything.
  4. We're too desperate and fragile to play jokes. What's laughter?
  5. Maybe they're finalizing funding for those 6, or maybe they are waitlisted applications. That's what I would assume.
  6. If I'm rejected on april 1st, I won't believe it. If I'm accepted, I'll take it!
  7. uuuuugh noooo! Should have stopped at gathering blue.
  8. I would definitely do grad school still. Going on year 2 of being ridiculously underemployed? No thank you.
  9. Have you ever read the sequels (actually called "companion novels") to The Giver? I remember Gathering Blue being okay, but being VERY disappointed in Messenger. I think Lois Lowry thought "if I take away all articles and pronouns, itll be more like a fantasy novel!"
  10. Quant: went through a study book for 2 months and took 10 or so practice tests. I hadnt taken a math class in UG at all, so it all left me. Average score. Verbal: Read through word lists, took a couple practice tests. Did very, very well. Writing: Didn't study at all, no practice tests. (I did a lot of this in UG and before with writing AP tests). Did pretty well.
  11. Yes, but could we not compare something we don't like to someone having a mental impairment. Not okay.
  12. It sounds very promising! We all second guess ourselves during the wait. It's very emotionally taxing, especially when we're told a specific timeframe and then that doesn't hold true. It sounds like you have all the support you could possibly ask for from the department. Take a few deep breaths and treat yourself to something indulgent.
  13. I'm on the last book of the Wrinkle in Time series (never read them as a child), and I'm also working on Parable of the Talents (the second and, incidentally, the final in Octavia Butler's intended trilogy). Currently waiting for Margaret Atwood to write the third book in the MaddAddam trilogy (Oryx and Crake, Year of the Flood). Apparently I love speculative fiction these days. I also throw in some Ursula LeGuin for good measure, and whatever the feminist bookclub I attend is reading that month.
  14. Last night I had a dream I received an email saying my status had been updated. My alarm clock went off right as I was clicking the status. Maybe I'm psychic and today is the day!
  15. It also depends on your comfort level with the material and your study habits. I also did about 3 hours per day for 6-8 weeks ahead of time, and it was fine. I studied the day before the test because my math scores were all over the place and it helped me feel like i was accomplishing something, but took my time and relaxed the day of (I had an afternoon session).
  16. The website service my application was sent through tells me my package is incomplete because the department never received official GRE scores. It isn't a requirement for all students, only for students with international degrees (my degree is US and I applied to a Canadian school). I emailed the department and they told me it wasn't a big deal, and that if they extend me an offer, we can worry about the paperwork then. The only way I would know is that damned little line of text that tells me they haven't extended me an offer. And that my application is incomplete. One day soon I'd like to see that little line of text change.
  17. Im starting to think its more and more likely that I'm going to be rejected if i havent heard back by now.
  18. Thank you so much for this! I'm actually an extravert with major social anxiety, so while I crave the company of others, I find socialization difficult a lot of the time. This is very helpful.
  19. Yeah. I moved from MI to Vancouver. Talk about a slap in the face. I'm NEVER owning. 1 bedroom strata? half a million, easy. What a joke.
  20. Exactly. I'm curious how the rent on an apartment is $1000 and houses are only 60k where you're going. With that disparity between prices, I would wonder at the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the house. Most like this is a very old house with an old furnace, poor energy efficiency, etc. Either that, or the house is further out from campus in a totally different neighborhood that may not be accessible to students. If that's the case, who will rent it when you're gone? In the town I went to UG and grew up near, my partner at the time bought a house for a little under 60k, which was 10 miles from campus. A few months after he bought it, the foundation cracked, slowly flooded the finished basement, and molded. He then spent thousands of dollars and countless hours trying to fix it. When the engine on my car died, it was almost impossible for me to get to school since we were so far away. That's just one scenario. Most students in my area rented an apartment or a house: apartment complexes near the greek district went for, at most, $800 for a 2 bedroom (all inclusive with gym and pool and in unit laundry). If you rented a 4+ bedroom house, each person could easily get rent for $200 each. I rented an apartment in a heritage building split into 4 unitst, 2 bedroom, and each room was $300. This was fairly recently in Michigan, so take that for what it's worth, I suppose. Point being, housing prices will vary but it was certainly more cost effective to rent when you consider all the things that could go wrong with a house. And if you're moving across the country - which, from another of your posts, looks to be the case - who's to say you'll want to stay there? Dealing with finding tenants or a management company for this house when you've been offered an amazing job across the country after you're finished with school might be a lot more hassel than it's worth.
  21. Check your spam filter?
  22. Mine says nothing about being under review, even. Quite simply: "no decision has been made." it also says my application is incomplete because they haven't received my GRE scores which, according to the office manager, isn't an issue. Still, frustrating. Thanks for your cooperation, ETS.
  23. Exact same boat. Only applied to one school/program, called early last week and they said I should hear back within the next couple of weeks. I desperately want this, but my hopes are dwindling. The upside is I've been out of school for a while. The downside is I've also been unemployed for a while.
  24. GOOD, it finally worked. I was about to have a heart attack!
