Mathematics courses for a chemistry major
33andathirdRPM replied to bunninies's topic in Chemistry Forum
Will you be working with models in the future that feature differential equations? If so, I'd think that taking an introductory course and maybe even a PDE course would be beneficial. If you take a good linear algebra course and an introductory differential equations course you should immediately start to see a lot of connections. An analysis course would help with understanding the particulars of the PDE course. A numerical analysis course could (should?) feature schemes for solving those PDEs. So, in other words... -
Mine were nowhere near that tricky. One just needs to be able to compute a mean and a variance, or do problems like the following. Suppose P( A ) = 2/5 and P( B ) = 2/3. Choose the correct option: i ) 0 <= P(AB) < 0.2 ii ) .2 <= P(AB) < .4 iii ) .4 <= P(AB) < .6 iv ) .6 <= P(AB) < .8 v ) .8 <= P(AB) <= 1

Mathematics courses for a chemistry major

Can't go wrong with Linear Algebra and Analysis, with some Numerical Analysis and Probability as your schedule permits or your future programs prefer. -
I had an obscene amount of probability-related problems when I took the GRE. In all seriousness, even with my math background if I hadn't had as much experience tutoring students in introductory statistics classes, those sections would have taken me much longer.

Is the geometry course an axiomatic geometry course? A differential geometry course? I'm just curious. -
CS vs IEOR vs Statistics (which is more competitive)

Princeton IEOR is extremely competitive. -

You seem to have a response prepared for every reason you've been given for not doing this. So, to save time, please tell us exactly what your question or concern is. If you're asking for validation concerning a decision to apply to a PhD program knowing that you only want your masters, you're unlikely to find it in these forums.

Recall that a vector (for our purposes here) is a magnitude and a direction. The difference between speed and velocity here is that speed is analogous to the magnitude of the velocity vector. Suppose that we're standing next to a highway that travels north and south. I could say that an object on the highway is traveling at 30 kilometers per hour without telling you which direction; this is describing only the speed of the object. I could also say that an object on the highway is traveling at 30 kilometers per hour headed south. Now that I've given both a magnitude (30) and a direction (south), I have described the velocity of the object. I hope this helps.

Any chance of a Math Ph.D?

Have you looked at programs that specialize in those areas? What manner of optimization problems intrigue you? -

What exactly do you want to study, and why? What led you to those decisions? You'll need to write a statement of purpose, and the answers to those questions will highly affect how your application is received. -
Again, your QR score is fine and your VR score shouldn't keep you out of anywhere. Was your AW score above 4? I don't see how retaking the general GRE would benefit you greatly.
-
There's nothing wrong with wanting the highest score possible. Still, I'm curious as to why you're determined to get a 170? A 166 or 167 shouldn't keep you out of any programs.
-
Your verbal score shouldn't hold you back from anything. Are you planning on taking the math subject GRE also?

FWIW I love my Lenovo W520. The only issue I've had is a broken key on the keyboard, but I literally use this computer all the time. New keyboard is already ordered and on the way for < $50.
