  1. Congrats on the UNC acceptance!!
  2. "Your data suggest little or no association between Male and Female with Career and Family." Yay, I'm impartial!
  3. Congratulations on the acceptance, sooshaloosh! I've been accepted to the Ph.D. program in Operations Research at NCSU - we may cross paths at some point! I am also curious about the Raleigh area. I have a vehicle, but I'd prefer to be close enough to campus to be able to walk or bike, or use public transportation. Are those options viable near NCSU campus? Is housing that's suitable for a grad student (read: not close to loud undergrads) available nearby? Thanks in advance for your input!
  4. Thank you. I was so nervous when I got that e-mail this morning, and so relieved and thrilled to see that I had made it in!!
  5. Wish I had known about the essay topics before I took the exam. Then again, AW isn't extraordinarily important for my program. Still, higher scores are always nice.
  6. Congratulations!
  7. Oops, just reread your post and realized that you answered my question, more or less. Is the Linear Algebra course more abstract in nature, or does it focus on applications? Either would be great, but if it's very abstract then I'd definitely lean towards taking RA.
  8. If the Linear Algebra course is proof heavy, I'd recommend starting there. You're going to have to take Real Analysis at some point but if you haven't had a math course with proofs then RA might prove to be a rough transition.
  9. I had a sequence problem, which pretty much signaled that that section was my experimental part. lol It was refreshing to compute a limit instead of worry about figuring out which standard deviation of fish populations was higher.
  10. I had at least 7 probability and statistics questions. If I didn't tutor students on campus I probably wouldn't have been able to get through them so quickly (and, in fact, I got a ridiculously easy one wrong because I over thought it). Just understand the concept of expectation and variance and be able to compute simple examples and you should be fine.
  11. AW is a complete crapshoot. If you're confident that your writing sample was better than the score you received, you could always pay for a rescore. By any chance do you have any data from the programs you're considering about their preferred GRE scores?
  12. I see that someone posted an invitation to U-M Recruitment Weekend for Operations Research in the Results. No e-mail from them in my inbox, sooo... yeah.
  13. Also - congratulations on the acceptance to OSU, efh0888! They have a very strong program.
  14. Has anyone heard anything about U-M Recruitment weekend? I know that I'm a huge underdog to get in there, but hope springs eternal...
  15. I'm sure someone has probably posted something like this, but I hate hearing: "Why are you going to grad school? You're smart enough to get a job without it." *sigh*
  16. If you've been accepted and nominated for a fellowship, it would seem that they want you there. At this point, I would think that it's highly unlikely that you won't receive funding. Have you received acceptances from any other programs? If you're extremely concerned about your outcome, those other offers could have utility as bargaining chips in negotiating with OSU.
  17. The statistics class should help. I had an unexpectedly high amount of probability and statistics questions.
  18. intrinsic motivation
  19. There are LaTeX libraries that can generate all types of artwork, if you're familiar with creating documents with LaTeX.
  20. The professor may not know how to properly apply the technique. Following up with them on this could be a bit touchy though.
  21. For a guy, this is what I would recommend. Check with wedding/tux places.
  22. Resonance chamber
