When did Comp Rhet become mainstream?
1Q84 replied to xolo's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Well, all I can say is I'm super glad all the negativity came out after application season. This would've been too predictable during the height of our collective anxiety. -
Apologies! I guess my information is specific to my programs.

I'm not sure why you're so hung up on the university "creating problems" for you. Schools do not want to create problems for you, no matter what you did--that is, unless they want to expose themselves to massive legal ramifications. But to answer your questions: 1. No, you cannot receive multiple I-20s. 2. You have to request for your first institution to transfer your I-20 to your new institution. The second institution will only send out your new I-20 when the first institution has released it; therefore, you will only ever have one I-20 at one time.

I'm a full-blown office/desk addict (plus Keurig + fridge + microwave), so I find it hard to work outside. I tried to do some reading outside the other day and the wind was blowing my pages around and when I went inside, I was pretty much blind from how bright it was outside. I really don't get how people work outside for that long.

Banking in the USA? (Canadian asking)
1Q84 replied to quilledink's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
TakeruK! Thanks for the tip on looking at what schools offer. I went searching and stumbled upon the USC Credit Union. I was happy to find that they provide super low interest rates... and that was something that was stressing me out when I saw another one of your posts that mentioned owning a car can cost about $5000 per year in California (probably more in LA!) -
Banking in the USA? (Canadian asking)

I've been holding off (for two years) to bring my Canadian bucks over the border. Alas, the loonie has fallen even more since then. Bah! -
The school can get into huge trouble with the federal government if they do not abide by FERPA. I'd bring this up to your HR department if members of your program continually breach ethical and legal codes of conduct.

So is biking, driving a car, and being a pedestrian considering how insane Angelinos get once they hit asphalt. I figure I've improved my chances of living by 80% by staying off the freeway. Awesome! Thanks!

Is it really free scooter parking on UCLA campus? Good to know... I ride a Stella and I'm around Santa Monica at the moment.

The Graduate School Ponzi Scheme
1Q84 replied to VirtualMessage's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
But let's all remember that not everyone on TGC is a super-keener like many of us are in this thread. Sure, we all spend a lot of time obsessing over questions posed in here but if any random lurker or newbie comes and reads through the thread, I still think some benefit is to be had for them--even if that's just knowing that this contentious issue is even being discussed. I really think if this topic bugs people so much, they should just stay away. It's pretty simple. All the people coming in and trying to clamp down on conversation (even if it seems circular) aren't doing much to help the situation much either. Let's do this. -

YES. I'm told I was officially admitted but haven't received registration info yet. I'm currently staring blissfully at course offerings! Ohhhh... Amazon used book buying is my guilty pleasure! -
I know nerves are probably very high for some today so for those of you boring a hole into your inbox with your laser eye beams, come in and blow off some steam! Get a back rub! Have a mojito! We're all cheering for you in here. For those who have made their decisions, whatever they may be, come in and celebrate, commiserate, or simply reclinate (I know that's not a word)! Whatever, let Jim Carrey kiss you on stage! I should add: no matter what we all end up doing, we're all move on from this point. Forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

Me me me! I'm super, super excited. Haven't had a chance to look around campus fully yet.

Waiting to Exhale (the wait list thread)

Congrats Radcafe and Jean Luc!!!!!!!! -
Yes, they're even extracting water from water tables that are tens of thousands of years old now. http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2015/03/california-pumping-water-fell-earth-20000-years-ago California may always have had water problems, as BBQ says, but this is just asking to make it worse.

I want to just give up on this MA thesis but I also don't want my readers to think I'm a complete moron.

What aspect of graduate student life surprised you the most?

Yes, this has been causing me quite a bit of anxiety lately. SNPCracklePop, do you mind mentioning what field you're in? -

I really wish we could all hang out in one room and drink some cocoa while we wait for the last minute offers to come in. I can't imagine what you all are feeling! Sending unicorn and leprechaun vibes to all still waiting! -

And (only if this is truly the case), letting them know that you would accept an offer from them on the spot should one come could help light a fire under their butts. I know for sure some programs are less eager to hustle for you if they think that you'll just end up going somewhere else. It worked for me, YMMV!
