President Trump's Temporary Halt on Immigration Announcement

Just out of curiosity, any responses on how President Trump's recent announcement on a "temporary freeze on all immigration" impacts their graduate school decision making thoughts?

Interested in what people have to say.

Just strongly hoping it gets lifted by September if on-campus classes have resumed this fall, and by January if they haven't. Grad school without international students sounds awful (especially in international development).

International students are NOT immigrants. To get most types of visas you explicitly CANNOT want to immigrate. By definition you're in the US as a temporary guest to do a specific thing (education, tourism, visiting a family member etc.) and are not here to stay.

International students aren't immigrants, but their visas are still issued through the customs/immigrations department. The US has currently frozen the issuing of visas so foreign students are definitely not going to be allowed to enter the US (since they can't get their visas) until this issue is resolved.

1) Immigration orders do not affect (or should not) decision-making. Most AdComms are not following the news on immigration that closely.

2) The immigration tweet and subsequent clarifications affect applications for residency and citizenship, not temporary visas.

3) However, as @joysii mentioned, international students cannot have visa issued because centers are closed worldwide. That has nothing to do with this announcement, visa services were suspended world wide

4) Most importantly, this is not a legal forum and should ALWAYS, ALWAYS check with the office of international students at your institution for up-to-date information on your particular cases.

Which has nothing to do with Trump's announcement on immigration halt. The user I was replying to thought this "immigration halt" would have to be lifted for international students to come to school, showing that they probably didn't know what the word immigrant means in legal contexts.

Originally I posted this in reference to concerns about immigrating to the US post grad school and graduate school considerations. However, I'm glad we have expanded the conversation to highlight clarity on legal language on coming to school in the US.

Do you think this will be effective until 2021-2022? Because I have a Visiting Research Scholar Opportunity in the States starting in September 2021...

YOu'll be a non-immigrant (like J1 visa), so you are a non-immigrant. Immigrant announcement will therefore no apply to you.
