Ok people here are some hints.

In 2009, I received my email at 9:21AM (New York Time)

The subject of the letter was Your Fulbright Applications.

The letter contained the following info:

Dear Albanski,

I am pleased to inform you that the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education (IIE) has recommended you for a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the academic year 2009-10. Your application has been forwarded to the supervising agency abroad for final review. In addition, your application will be forwarded to the program sponsor, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, for transmittal to the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB). The FSB makes final decisions on Fulbright awards.

This letter is not notification of a grant since the number of recommended candidates exceeds the number of awards available. If you are selected for an award the supervising agency overseas will inform you of your status. If you are named an alternate or are not selected, you will be notified by IIE. For further information about the next stage in the selection process, go to the website:

https://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/apply/FAQ_Final_Steps.pdf

Since selection is a lengthy process, the final decision may not be made before the end of June. In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there are factors that could preclude your accepting the grant. Receipt of a grant is contingent upon: (a) approval by the FSB; (B) concurrence by the supervising agency abroad; © medical and research clearances; (d) security factors in the country of your application; and, (e) availability of funds.

Congratulations on your success in the preliminary stages of the competition.

Sincerely yours,

Theresa Granza, Director, U.S. Student Programs

I emailed my advisor this morning letting her know that the application decisions were going to be sent out early and that she will know ahead of time. I also asked her to email me if she heard anything, good or bad. This is what she wrote:

"I will be in touch soon" (@ 6:50AM)

The whole day didn't write anything to me. Im definately thinking I am out of the running. I am tired of being rejected by the Fulbright people. My topics are always too sensitive. All they want are people who will look at the country's culture, its never about any real social issues or conducting social science research.

Don't count yourself out so soon! You know, I find it interesting how most of the topics people conduct research on are in the social sciences. Being an engineer, I'm not too sure of what the "issues" are within social scientists and blah blah, but I do think they look at the relevancy of the topic? I mean, mine was almost too technical - I'm looking at integrated modeling of the nitrogen cycle into a hydrologic (water) model, by taking ideas from the university I am going to where they do crop/grassland modeling (crops=N fertilizer application).

What was your topic? Was it similar to when you applied last year?

When i applied in 2009 I wanted to study the domestic violence rate differences in urban and rural Albania. This year, I wanted to study the Illegal Cigarette Market

Aw, Albanski, I'm still rooting for you -- and for all of you. Melchior, whatever happens, at least you've already got a Cambridge admit under your belt! That's pretty darned fantastic already. I'm incredibly jealous that you already know for certain! (Very happy for you, of course :) ) The director of the program I applied to in the UK (apologies for the deliberate vagueness -- it's not Oxbridge, though) said I was very likely to be accepted, which is in my SOP...but nothing official has come through yet. Which means, as of right now, I have --gulp --no letter of affiliation. Anyone else in this boat? Can I basically assume a rejection, do you think? IIE had said it was okay to just send along my admissions letter when it came, but it just hasn't come through in time...

Man, I wish we all knew already! Hang in there, everyone

Yeah, got the same generic email. This is very exciting. I was going crazy.

Oh, BLAST, Albanski, I am kicking the seat of my own pants -- our posts must've crossed in midstream -- I'm so sorry! But good for you for being so controversial -- at least that means you're really pushing the boundaries of your field. Best of luck.

Was it your FPA you heard from, I'm assuming?

I just got an email that I am a finalist for New Zealand!

I would be going to the University of Wellington, studying development and environmental issues related to cows in both NZ and the US. I am so excited but also don't think I can handle waiting until April!

Good luck Everyone!

Read the fine print at the bottom: Don't forget to send your transcripts! Better request and send them off now before forgetting a silly, minute thing like this!

I got rejected. Boo. But I suppose it's nice I won't have to live across the world from my husband.

Albanski: This is my second year of applying - last year I was rejected in the first round.
