So I'm curious.  How many rounds of application did everyone go through?  I went through a total of three and didn't have any luck till the second time around.  It took me three tries to get into the department I'm in now (though technically I applied to a different program within the same department the first two times).

Hello, and thanks for making this thread!

I'm applying for fall 2023, so I figured I'd drop by to say hello. Currently finishing up a two-year terminal MA in Greek and Latin, so I'm hoping I have an okay time with PhD apps this year. I feel kind of adrift and wildly uncertain about where to apply so far, though! I'm especially interested in Greek tragedy, lyric poetry in both languages, and am curious about Ancient Near Eastern cultural influences on ancient Greece especially.

I'm more on the history track, so I'm not as familiar with the literature side of things, but from what I understand, Johannes Haubold at Princeton is a specialist on near-eastern influence on Greek epics (though you probably already know this ?). 

The SCS has a list of all the Classics graduate programs in North America.  That might be a good place to start.  When I was applying, I went through that list first and filtered out programs that I knew I would not be going no matter what (bc of location, weather, or whatever other reasons you might have).  For the remaining programs, you can go over the faculty page on their websites and see if any might match your research interest.  Or if you have read a book or article that really interest you, find out what programs the authors are currently at.  You can also check with your advisor and other faculty in your current programs and see if they might have suggestions for which programs to apply to.  Hope this helps a little!

Applied to Chicago, UCLA, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins. Hoping to hear back ASAP but I know the waiting game is about to begin. I heard Hopkins can send out decisions really early, though, so you never know.

Hello Everyone and happy New Year!

I am an international student in a liberal arts college in the Mid West. I am applying to PhD programs for Fall 2023. My interests are in Late Antiquity (especially how Greek and Latin writers responded to and influenced Near Eastern trends viewable in Coptic, Syriac, among other languages). My training has been mostly philological (i.e. textual criticism, comparative linguistics, etc), but I would like to explore other fields as well. 

I have applied to a few schools in the US. I hope that I would at least get into one of them! I have found cool people that I would be thrilled to study under and work with in all of them! If nowhere wants to take me, I will probably go to Germany for a Master's (which is due in March, so I really would like to hear back something, be it an admission letter or not, so then I could apply to German/French schools.)

Personally, going to a Master's in Germany or France would be financially more sensible than doing one in the UK or the US, where, as an international student, I have to pay tens of thousands of dollars (cf Germany's two or three hundred "registration fee"). Are there anyone else panicking about results, and thinking about doing a degree somewhere else?

Hello Everyone!

Two years ago I applied to PhD programs right out of undergrad (state school), after not receiving any offers I attended an MA program which I am completing this spring. I have applied to Yale, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, Boston University, Penn, and Michigan. Eagerly awaiting the interview process and will post updates as I hear from each program. Haha I have been summoned! So happy to see some near eastern folks on here. I did not apply through classics anywhere, but all nelc or interdisciplinary programs, and am currently at UPenn AAMW PhD.

I am applying to Yale, Chicago, ISAW, JHU, Michigan, Brown for Ph.D. programs; Oxford and Leiden for Master programs. Really nervous right now cuz I am just a undergrad...

When I applied to UChicago through Classics last year, I got the interview invite at the beginning of January and got the decision at the end of the month.  Of course, that's last year and in any case NELC might follow a different schedule.  Fingers crossed for you and everyone else!

I know the feeling!  The first time I applied, I got all rejections and I still remember exactly where I was when I received my last two rejections.  I hope it works out for you and everyone else this round, but don't give up!

I also did an MA before PhD.  It definitely made me a stronger candidate when applied for PhD later.  Here's an updated list of all the funded Classics MA/pre-doc/post-bacc programs in North America (plus one or two in Europe I think).  Applications for some of them are still open.  They should be open to international students, too, but don't take my word for it, and check with the programs.
