To those who have been accepted already (well done, btw!):

Are any of you - who are in IR or CP -  NOT quant-research focused?

I know US schools are quant-oriented, though I’m sure not everything in IR or CP is about quant.

Please share your ideas.

I am in CP field, quant focused, and I mentioned my formal modeling skills in my application materials. I think some schools also welcome non-quant applicants but they mostly do hybrid methods (i.e., Northwestern). Hope this piece of information helps...

Hey @qampus. Tbh, there are quant-oriented programs and those that, although not quant-oriented, appreciate quant abilities - and will require you to take stats courses. That said, you can still shape your SoP to show interest in qualitative research, and look for professors who share "ethnographic sensibility". You can find good professors with high qualitative expertise in NW, Georgetown, UW-Madison, Minnesota...

Is anyone here claiming the OSU interview? It looks like the last few years they haven't done them, but in the years they did complete interviews, now should be about the time they are sending them out.

Impressive, people. From three or four schools that released results so far, only acceptances and waitlists are reported on the forum, it seems like we have incredibly qualified competition this year. Congrats to those who received good news and good luck to the rest of us.

Hello everyone, ı have a question. I have received multiple e-mails (the same text block in each, so nothing personal) from two schools I applied to inviting me to live group or one-on-one chat with the graduate admissions should I have any questions regarding the process. I have no burning questions to ask besides when the results will be out, and I think this is sort of a marketing exercise, however, I was wondering whether showing up to those to make your face known makes any difference, I think no, but would like to hear from anyone who took their chances with these and can say it benefited them somehow, many thanks.

Honestly, I don't think showing up to those would make a huge difference. I also received similar marketing emails shortly after I submitted applications, but didn't take them seriously. I think interviews would matter; other than that, schools make decisions based on your application materials. And also lots of schools don't do interviews at all. So just relax and I believe there will be good results coming out within one or two weeks!

I agree. I heard that adcomms are very "protective" about their decision-making process and wouldn't accept external influence. So, activities that happen outside the boundaries of the adcomm shouldn't impact the admission decision.

Is that George Washington? Applied there, CP/political behavior as well, heard nothing. Taking it as a sign of my impending rejection.

No, but worse. Somehow, although I completed the application and paid the fee, my application is not processed, office said I had to take some further action, but did not specify what in an email. They offered me a refund, off to such a great start, perfect closure ahahahaha I cannot believe myself, or them.

A decision may come on any day, and even on a Sunday, right?

I have received decisions only on business days in previous undergrad and grad cycles, but dunno.

I guess the results will come normally in business days.

But Emory sent some results last Jan 7th (Saturday).

Anyway, tbh, I'll try to enjoy my weekends.

Results are like rain/snow: they come when they come ?

Hi. Oh gosh someone got interview offer from Penn State.... then I may assume my rejection...

Don’t read too much into interviews. Some programs interview all admits, some interview for particular subfields, some interview only a couple admits, and sometimes only a couple professors like to interview applicants.

https://www.martindevaux.com/2020/11/political-science-phd-admission-decisions/ This tool can be handy for checking when/if interviews occur. Doesn’t look like Penn state is a habitual interviewer. Don’t worry!

Hey guys,

So lots of action going on in the last couple days. I am assuming that Boston U will also come in a few days time. No insight info or whatsoever but just intuition and data from previous years tell me that it will be out within next week.

Also not PhD but I got an admission offer from SOAS London for MA in Middle Eastern Studies. Although the funding will be a major concern, I really feel like it is a good first step in the admissions marathon. Really wanted to share it with the forum!

I was wondering the same thing about Penn State.

I guess the worst thing is if a person gets waitlisted (or her or his application is put on hold or something) and has to wait for ages to get closure on the attempt. However, this may certainly be alleviated by the news in the form of positive decisions by other universities... Once you get into a school and are contented with it, the other decisions do not simply hold the same gravity anymore :) ...

Hello everyone! I could not receive the Interview email for Georgetown Political Science PhD program; should I assume that my application would be rejected? Does Georgetown University Political Science Department tend to interview all applicants? I saw one International applicant received email from the department. Thanks in advance.

Anybody in the AP subfield hearing back from Notre Dame? It has been a while since the last interview invitation was posted, with the invitation deadline being the next Thursday (the 26th). But since this has been only the first week of their spring semester, it is possible that the department is still reviewing applications, the volume of which, according to their past statistics, could be somewhat large (250+).

at this point I think it's safe to assume only a small sample of ppl have been invited, with more invitations to come. I mean, there were only two reported interviews, none of which claimed a field. I'm thinking they are taking this to the wire

ATTENTION!

For our convenience, I have created a Telegram chat group that can be used to share any news we have and stay tuned to the conversation!

The address of the group: t.me/thegradcafe

I believe using Telegram as a conversation platform during this waiting time for an overly anxious dude like myself is a bit of a relief. :)
