dkouznetsova Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I got my USC acceptance letter March 31st, and they want my deposit by April 8th. I need more time to think! Columbia v. USC! Have you heard? Erin: USC requires a response by the 29th? Does this mean if we have not heard from them yet we are rejected...? Still waiting on USC, CSUN, SF State...
dkouznetsova Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I submitted my application around November 18th. Received my acceptance March 5th. Am still juggling schools. I was hoping to get into Cal but was rejected, and waitlisted at SFSU. USC accepted me but LA isn't my most desirable place to live - but I want to move out of NYC, so I am trying to decide between USC and Columbia. Any suggestions/tips? To those who have applied to Columbia for Fall 2011: have you guys heard back yet? If so, when did you submit your apps? If you haven't heard, what's your current situation? Are you juggling different schools at the moment? Have you tried contacting the office, too? Any encouraging responses from them?

Colombia is a much higher ranking school for social work that is a lot cheaper than USC and in a nicer area. But if you really want to leave NY, USC has a really great program and is a good option if you don't mind huge loans. There is a chance that you could get a significant amount of financial aid but the problem is that they wont tell you until after you have officially accepted and sent in the deposit, so you wont be able to factor in how much aid you will get into your decision. I have also head great things about USC's online program. It is the same price but you could live where ever you wanted to.
Shanika31 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 USC put me on their alternate list, so I don't know if I'll get in!
Devyn Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) Still no word from USC or Cal State Fullerton. Anyone heard from Fullerton? I found out my application at USC was complete and under review on March 18th and still haven't heard anything.... Should I start to create a backup plan. Fullerton gave me a interview, it didn't go well. Starting to worry all my hard work was futile. Edited April 4, 2011 by Devyn
Lilly Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Is SFSU difficult to get into? Are you not surprised because you had a low GPA or something else lacking on your application? I am really hoping to get into the program. I was wait listed there...even though I got into Berkeley and UChicago. When I was speaking to them earlier they told me they had 25 spots and over 800 applications...I've heard that they value work experience really highly as well.
MSW11 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) I'm just not surprised because of how competitive it is. My GPA is close to a 4.0 for all upper division/major courses completed in the last two years. Plenty of professional work experience (not human service related though), lots of volunteer experience, some research experience, awards....I think it just wasn't a good fit for me and perhaps I slacked off on the essay prompts. I wouldn't have gone there anyway. I think this really needs to come across in an application by working very hard on your essay and matching it to their prompt. Being a good fit for the program and this coming across is another plus. I got into my top schools with funding, but waitlisted and rejected at the schools I would have been more hesitant about attending. My essays were all written for my top schools and tweaked for the others. Best advice for next year's applicants - work very hard on the essays for your top schools, as it will pay off! hewhzw Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I couldn't agree more .I just worked out my essay and applied it to all the six schools by replacing each school's name and I guess that's part of the reasons Columbia rejecting me. I should say that's definetly a bad and stupid idea. The admission committee staffs can see how much work you have done on their required essays through just a glance. You know, applicants should show their respect and concerning regarding that school, otherwise how can you make them believe in your commitment. Remember carefully read all the requirements of each school word by word including the format. Devyn Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 What is meant by work experience though? Does this mean volunteer work? They want to see you have done some kind of volunteering or internship within the realm of Social Work. Some schools require a certain amount of hours, look it up. Most will require at least a year long internship.
odugrad2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Has anyone heard from NYU lately? I submitted all my stuff February 1st and am just wondering when I will hear anything!

MSW2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Has anyone recieved any fellowships from Berkeley? I am waiting hopefully!
jedifreac Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 (edited) Ahhh...was told by UCLA that decisions should be made by end of March - April 1st at the latest...still haven't heard from them...so anxious. I just need to know one way or another so I can move on and figure out where I'll be going....this waiting period is driving me crazy. Is anyone else still waiting for UCLA? Should I just anticipate that I have been rejected since I haven't heard from them? I've called but no answer at the department and have checked my status online but it still states no decision has been made on my application... I'm still waiting to hear from UCLA, too. I turned in my application on December 1st, weeks in advance of the deadline. Since then, I haven't heard anything. This week I started making calls (no pick ups at the Department, just voicemail) and email but no response. The website doesn't show me anything, either. I'm kind of disappointed that I've heard nothing either way, given how expensive the fee ways. What worries me is that according to their website, Social Welfare New Admit Welcome Day is next Tuesday, April 12th. If that's the case, then I'm losing hope. According to the Department calendar, the MSW Admissions Committee is meeting again on April 11th. I have no idea what that means, though. It appears to be the last day the Committee will meet this year. Perhaps it is to rank and finalize the waitlist. Edited April 6, 2011 by jedifreac
AZmsw Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Has anyone recieved any fellowships from Berkeley? I am waiting hopefully! I received a modest fellowship a few weeks ago. According to an email sent out about a week and a half ago, they've notified everyone who will be getting one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the upside is that I don't think I will be attending Berkeley so maybe you'll get my fellowship!
thestarsarealigned Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I've also started making calls this week as well and have been checking the website incessantly but to no avail...voicemails at the department and no status updates on the website. I've always had a difficult time contacting the department though...so no surprise but still disappointed at this point because I would really like to know. My mind is sort of made up in regards to where I am going but I need to know one way or another from UCLA to fully weigh my options... That's absurd that you've had to wait this long since December! I turned in mine in January and was told that my application was in review in early February...so I feel like I am losing hope and just knowing that the new admit welcome day is next week is just another reason to lose hope... Maybe this is for the better...I was kind of dreading the possibility of moving and living in LA...but would have seriously considered it if UCLA was an option. How did you hear about your application being in review? Did they send an email informing you that it is in review? This is truly nailbiting. UCLA is the only school I applied to this year (made sense logistically.) I guess I thought I was a shoo in. I have lived experience as a person with a mental illness and my resume includes policy work for SAMHSA, the State Department of Mental Health, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.
thestarsarealigned Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I called in early February to check on the status of my application to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I tried calling repeatedly and finally got a hold of the department. Lance Fooks was really nice and helpful over the phone. He looked up my application and told me that he was actually preparing it to present to the admissions committee for review the following week. Nailbiting indeed! Your experience sounds really great though. Good luck to us. How did you hear about your application being in review? Did they send an email informing you that it is in review? jedifreac Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 thestarsarealigned, I just heard back from UCLA a few minutes ago via email and thought I should post here to let you know. It was an acceptance (no word of fellowship) with the request that I notify the school of my decision to attend no later than April 15th, in a week. For anyone out there who is still waiting to hear from UCLA, don't rule out admission...

For anyone out there who is still waiting to hear from UCLA, don't rule out admission... Congrats! I saw that you said that it was the only place you applied. I decided on UCLA a couple days ago! Are you going to the Admit Day? I am debating going because I do not want to miss work. I was also a UCLA undergrad, so I feel like I don't really need a campus tour, etc. and I can wait until Fall to meet faculty and such.
Shaakira20 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 NYU is supposedly really backed up because they didn't expect to receive so many apps. I e-mailed NYU yesterday asking when they'll be sending out decisions and this is what they said... We are sending out decisions fast and furious and do apologize for the delay. Many are going out in the next week or so. Thank you for your patience. -------------------------------------------- HURRY UP ALREADY NYU!!!
Shaakira20 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Also I posted this under "CUNY Hunter" but haven't received any feedback, and I really need some advice/insight!!! I just had an interview at Hunter and the program seems amazing and definitely worth it for the costs. However, I applied to the COP&D (Community Organization, Planning and Development) program and after going to the interview and getting more information on the concentration, I don't think it's right for me. I'm applying to MSW programs coming right out of undergrad (I graduate this May) and I don't feel as though I have enough experience in social work on an individual level to feel comfortable managing and addressing individuals/communities on a macro level. My interviewer also noted that if we wanted to switch our concentration to something else, like Clinical Practice with Individuals and Families, we should alert them now and they'll add our names to that pool of applicants. I'm really considering switching my concentration to the clinical track, but I'm afraid that changing it will compromise my application and decrease my chances of admission, especially since a lot of students apply to the clinical program, so I really need some advice!! Does anyone have some insight or experience with Hunter's admissions process? What should I do???

I was also an undergrad Bruin (so I chuckled when the email said "we hope you will soon become a Bruin...") but I may go anyway. I'm hoping to meet some professors and particularly the field placement person at the Department. More to scope out the other admits and the future second-years than anything else.
2011 MSW Hopeful Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Admitted to NYU and rejected from George Mason on the same day. $10,500 scholarship from NYU seems like a pretty solid offer coming from them, but I'm interested in how that compares with what others are seeing. I know Masters programs are thought of as cash cows for larger universities, but I'm feeling a little confused by my admittances/rejections -- and definitely glad I didn't count on any "safety schools," since it seems I'm not being admitted to schools I felt were sure bets. I don't think I slacked off on my applications to Temple and GMU, so maybe it had something to do with their decision-making processes/GPA cutoffs/etc.
