Kathiza Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 Thank you so much for asking. I'm an international student and I thought it's just because of my bad English (and my bad google-skills *g*) that I don't understand what this means
philosophy chic Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 this thread made me smile (and was informative too). thanks to whoever started it!
Takky Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) Thank you for asking I don't know what does it mean either. Edited February 11, 2011 by Takky
DrPepper-olic Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 What's "LTR" ?!?!? It never ends. This. It makes me think of L8R. Also, this could be dumb, but is it necessary to have a person of interest? I think there were only 3 or 4 schools where I named a specific professor in my SoP. I'm confused...
oiseauaudio Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 Mojingly, hearts! I wasn't sure if it was "Professor" or "Person" of interest.....aaaaaaah!!
Ignatius_J_Reilly Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) Hahaha! So glad I'm not the only one who had to figure out what POI, LOR, and SOP meant on their own. (+1 to MojJingly!) I think I'm going to start making-up my own ridiculously misleading acronyms so everyone else is confused as we are. For example, anyone's top school can be S.T.I.L.L.T.A.N. (School That I'd Literally Love To Attend Now) Anyone have any others? Edited February 17, 2011 by Ignatius_J_Reilly maeby-me, Ignatius_J_Reilly and MoJingly 3
MoJingly Posted February 18, 2011 Author Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) Anyone have any others? maeby-me Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Can I add "adcom" to this list? I just now figured out that it meant admissions committee....
natsteel Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 Perhaps the mods could post a sticky in the welcome forum with a brief acronym glossary for newcomers, i.e., POI, PA, LOR, adcomm, etc... SeriousSillyPutty 1

Sleepy Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I'm sorry I'm not versed in grad talk, but I've been curious about this acronym for months now and I figured I'd take the risk of looking stupid. So, what does POI mean?
newms Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) We really need a glossary of commonly used terms and acronyms on here. POI = Professor (or Person) of Interest. See this thread: PS. You're not stupid Edited April 11, 2011 by newms comp12 1
Strangefox Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 I'm sorry I'm not versed in grad talk, but I've been curious about this acronym for months now and I figured I'd take the risk of looking stupid. So, what does POI mean? A lot of people on this forum do not know what it is, but only a few dare to ask It means "person of interest". And yes, we certainly need a glossary There are still some less important acronyms on this forum whose meaning I still do not know...
brancan Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I just assumed it stood for "Professor of Interest." "Person of Interest" sounds like a crime scene investigation.

superbygk Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 i was reading through the forum, and i just googled 'what does poi stand for graduate school' and it sent me back to the forum and i found this thread! thanks! leave it to grad students to act like they know what everyone is talking about so as not to look stupid thanks to the creator of this thread for taking a bullet for us lesser mortals!
wildviolet Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Thanks for starting this thread! I had the exact same question... I just wasn't brave enough to ask it (even though this is an anonymous online forum... I think someone did some research *ahem* that found that a person's online persona is actually closer to the truth than his or her real life persona, so we can be just as affected by online interactions as we can by real life ones).
metamorfoz Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Good to know that I wasn't alone First post here btw. Hi everyone and hope you all get enrolled in the program you really want!
CarlieE Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 LOL this language is starting to creep into my non-online life.. ie. I was talking to my bf who is applying and I started using "POI" and "LOR" he gave me the oddest look... he thinks I spend wayyyyy too much time on gradcafe.
washdc Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Oh, and I kept thinking "poi," that Hawaiian side dish: Haha. This made me laugh. I lived in Hawaii for 5 years. Poi! ashiepoo72, spunkrag, Pitangus and 1 other 3 1
Fasnacht Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Thanks for the laughs! I especially love the acronyms upthread! Brilliant!
