I'm also driving down (I'm about 6 hours north, in western NY state). The important info for me is what time things are happening on Friday. I'd prefer not to miss my Thursday night Shakespeare seminar (since I'm already going to miss it two weeks later for the CEA conference), but even if I leave right after class, I wouldn't get to MD until 4am. If there are events planned in the morning/early afternoon on Friday, I doubt I would give a good impression on no sleep. I'm in a similar position as you. I'd like to be at my best, and most lucid, Friday, but I'm also planning to stay with friends who have 8-5 jobs, and don't want to impose more than I need to. At least I'm learning some patience! Tybalt Posted March 4, 2011 Share Posted March 4, 2011 Has anyone on the wait list received information about next weekend? It's been a week since I emailed, and I haven't gotten a response. I don't want to be that annoying applicant, but I also need to make travel plans--I know there are things happening on Friday, but since I live in driving distance, I'd like to know more so I can decide which day to arrive. I thought it would see if I was the only one still waiting for an itinerary before I contacted the department, since it's possible they're still organizing things. (It's also possible I'm over-thinking, because I am an obsessive planner and an obsessive emailer.) If I haven't heard anything by the end of tomorrow, I'm going to have to contact them, but if somehow my email was missed when everyone else was contacted, I'd like to go ahead and email them as soon as possible. Neurotic? Completely. But I'd like to blame this whole application process for that. I just received an e-mail from Dr. Ray with a pdf of the itinerary. I'm assuming everyone else got it as well. The variety of outfits I'm packing is somewhat ridiculous, but I'm dressing as I would for a conference: dress or skirt and tights, flats, nothing too "business-y" (so cardigans instead of button-ups). I tend to err on the side of dressier in my daily life, however, so this is what I'm most confortable wearing. If the intent is to stand out, you definitely would (although I don't know if they sell tights for lineman builds!). I think guys can never go wrong in khakis and a more casual button up, and I kind of envy the ease of that as a fallback outfit for all occasions. From what I've seen on the web-site/heard from a friend in the MLIS program, UMD is overhauling the MA program to make it an MAPhD (like Vanderbilt's program is structured). I just got accepted to the MA program! But it came through the automated system and I've heard nothing from the department. I'll be calling tomorrow, but I'm assuming that probably means the terminal MA without funding rather than the MA/PhD, given that I've heard nothing from the department and wasn't invited to the visiting weekend. Tybalt Posted March 13, 2011 Share Posted March 13, 2011 Just got back from the UMD visit weekend. I'm completely in love with this program and the campus. It was a little awkward being there as a wait-lister (particularly since I got a chance to hang out with the admitted folks in my sub-field--I don't WANT them to go somewhere else. They were cool as hell. I want to go to the program with them. It was a strange dynamic). The English building was absolutely beautiful, and just about every professor I spoke with was unbelievably intelligent and friendly (the DGS really sets the tone, and she's extremely upbeat and pleasant). The current grad students were really cool as well, and they put on a very nice graduate conference today. They had a nice selection of papers, and a fantastic keynote speaker (even if the speaker had a problem or two with the technology). I'm really hoping that there was a 3rd Renaissance scholar who didn't attend the weekend due to having acceptances from Harvard, Princeton and James Franco Universities, as I would love to get in off the waitlist while still getting a chance to work with the folks I met this weekend. If there are any other waitlisters biting their nails on this, I was notified by Sangeeta today that the final slot was offered to me--HOWEVER, I had already declared somewhere else and informed him of this like ten minutes ago. Hopefully this great offer trickles down to one of the other waitlisters. The details were 4 years, health insurance, 18k-20k stipend, no teaching first year, then 2, then 3, then 2. Good luck everyone, James I hope it does, but I'm starting to lose hope on Maryland. I e-mailed Dr. Ray for an update on Tuesday, and have not yet heard back. She's been really good about returning previous e-mails (ie- within 6 or 7 hours). Plus, if you were offered the last spot, I think that means they've met their quota for early modernists (you're in post-modern lit, right?).
