Nice email today that Claremont is giving me a 30% tuition remission. I wasn't really counting on anything from them, so that helps.

I do so wish that schools I know I didn't get into could get around to telling me I didn't get into them, you know? At this point, I just want this all to be over. Yes, Chicago and Yale, don't look so innocent, I'm talking about you.

I just got off the phone with Sandy Dowling at Chicago, who said that they were sending the mail out in batches and the last batch went out today.

I can't help but think they'd have sent out acceptances first, though...

thanks retiredwaif, this is helpful.

NRM Scholar - What program did you apply to at U of Colorado?

Sociology. All the programs I applied to are for sociology except U Chicago's Divinity School (ASR specialization). I have a background in anthropology and sociology (and everything I study has something to do with religion), so the Div. School is my dream program.

For anyone who might find this helpful. I am accepting a biblical studies position at Baylor, and turning down an HB position at SMU. Baylor's faculty fits my research interests better, and their funding package was fantastic. Good luck to anyone waiting on SMU!

general_jr,

Congrats on your acceptances, particularly to Northwestern's Ph.D. program! What do you hope to study?

Thanks, sbyoda. I'm really psyched about NU (History Department, actually). I'm interested in the late-medieval Catholic church and lay piety leading up to the Reformation. Kieckhefer, Elliott, and Newman at NU are pretty much perfect for me. I'm still pretty giddy about that. My fianc

Chicago letters are out. Internal applicants have taken spots in Theo, Hist of Religions, Hist of Judaism, Hist of Christianity, Religious Ethics, and NT. An HB person is rejecting their offer, so there's that.

I'm waitlisted at SMU, so this could be good/interesting news for me.

What was SMU's funding like? Curious how it might match up with other options I've got on the table.

Thanks for the notice. Best of luck at Baylor!

I got rejected from Harvard's MTS program. :( I'm sad but I kind of expected this given my late submission and my not-so-strong essays that I rushed through. haha.

Now I have to decide between UVa (MA/PhD with funding), Stanford (MA), and Columbia (MA). My interest is East Asian Buddhism, and particularly how devotional cult and tantric practices interacted with and infused into Zen/chan strand of Buddhism.

Among the three options on the table, obviously UVa has the nicest deal (PhD with funding) but my impression is that its main forte is on Tibetan/ South Asian Buddhism rather than East Asian Buddhism. In this respect, I feel like I'm more compatible with Stanford or Columbia's programs.

Can anyone help me out making decision? For masters, UVa seems like a pretty good place but I'm not sure I would like to pursue my PhD degree at UVa. Is it allowed to receive fellowship but finish only master's degree at UVa and apply to other schools for PhD degree?

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm on UVA's waitlist and want in pretty badly. That said, UVA is explicit about not (intentionally) funding MA students on their website, and you never know what resentments could come back to haunt you in the job market. Plus, in the discipline I'm interested in it seems many doctoral programs are easier to get into if you come out of their MA program. So if Stanford or Columbia are where you want to be longer term that might be a better option for the MA. Honestly, if it were me I would go wherever I wanted to be for the Ph.D. Whatever you choose, congrats on having three really nice options, you must be an impressive candidate.

addition- one more thing, uvastudent is on this board, maybe if you pm'd her/him you could get an inside perspective on your query w/out having to lay all your cards on the table with the faculty.

Thanks for posting that, dogerdogtx. The glimmer of hope is now a little brighter.

I just got rejected too. Six down, three to go. Since the Div. School was my only religion application, I suppose this means goodbye to the religion forum. At least I can think about other things now. Good luck, everyone.

Quick question .... has anyone heard anything about money from Duke Divinity? Does anyone know when they do their financial aid offers? I am playing the find the money to go to school game and I sure would like to know if they are going to offer me any money before I pay $100 to "hold my place." I have to send the money in by Tuesday... fun times...

Accepted Yale Divinity, Duke Divinity, Emory Divinity

Rejected Harvard Divinity

for the few people waiting for BU, i hear tell that they are processing letters, which should be 'out' by midweek. i assume that means in the mail, but maybe they still need to send them over to the grad school first? anyway, could be end of this week or (more likely) next week. ugh.

I'm waiting on BU. Do you know if they cut down on their admissions this year? Or, are they still taking the regular amount?

So, only expect to hear by post? No e-mail, website, or phone call?

It's my favoured program, so I'm pretty neurotic. I apologize in advance!

i don't know any of that, but i imagine you could find out from the admissions coordinator of the department (per smith). they have been quick to respond and helpful so far. they said they aren't allowed to inform apart from post (which i knew ahead of time), but they did say that the dean's office or grad school is allowed to tell us if they want, but there's no guarantee they will.
