jcarp
The worst part about this last month of waiting is that the decisions have already been made...I believe the Fulbright people are just processing them now. I hope we get notification before January 31st.

rkirk012
that survey e-mail is just mean. I applied for an ETA and I never got a survey e-mail which frightens me a lot!!! .....

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ETA applicant to Azerbaijan. I agree about the website; especially since it (ie stats) was updated midway through the process (leading me to change from Russia, which lost a large number of ETA grants, to Azerbaijan). I know it's unavoidable given the time frame (I was looking in May, June) but you think that they know exactly the numbers they have for the upcoming years by March or so?? I am also a little frustraed about the critical language enhancement award. Azeri was cut but I didn't receive notification of that until September, when I was fully committed to a year in Baku. Luckily I was able to find Indiana's summer program and say I would try to learn Azeri. To be honest, I was mostly interested in Azeri initially because of the CLEA, and might have chosen Kazakhstan had I known there would be no language scholarship. Another problem I just ran into is that Indiana cut their Azeri summer courses! So now I feel silly for putting it on my application but I think Indiana has always had it before. In that vein - does anyone know of a summer, US based (and cheap - I can't do Middleberry out of pocket, haha) Azeri language course? I am applying for regional M.A.'s and I have another question - a lot of FLAS schools say they need to know for sure if you are coming by April 15! How does one defer if that is the case? Not that I have gotten any (a lot of finger crossing), but just wondering how deferring programs for a year work if you get funding. Last note: any Fulbrighters (especially ETAs) from last year: when did you get notified of actual acceptance? Only one more month! Thanks and good luck to everyone!! That's very annoying. Unfortunately, you might as well complain to Congress because they set the budgets. I had a hard time understanding how the Fulbright and the CLEA work together for Russia. Russia seems to be a special case (you must do language training concurrently with the Fulbright) because of visa idiosyncrasies.
cabooklover
Hello all! Wish I had found this forum a long time ago, let me tell you! I applied to the University of Birmingham, in England, and was accepted into their TransAtlantic Studies program which is part of their American and Canadian Studies department. Funding is a huge issue for me, so I applied for a Fulbright as an at-large applicant. I don't know what I was thinking, my UG GPA was horrible (and I'm not talking about a 3.49 instead of a 3.5, more like I'm below a 3.0 :/) I did submit, with my application, the IQ testing that I had done that found a learning disability, the testing was only done as I was transferring to a four year university as a junior, which helps explain me low GPA. :/ I totally scared about notifications. I googled timeline for fulbright and what I found confused me. Are we all notified *by* January 31st or are we notified *on* January 31st? Anyway, good luck to everyone! I also applied to a program in London. I am hoping to do a masters at the Warburg Institute, which is part of the University of London. Would you also be doing a masters program? What did you include in your statement about community service/involvement? That part was tough for me because there isn't anything specific associated with my program that I would be involved with. OMG. That part was hard for me. I was accepted to UofBirmingham to stuyd TransAtlantic Studies so I just said that I would be studying in the American and Canadian Studies department and that I hoped to interact with my fellow students and to be involved on-campus. Now I feel like an idiot. Edited December 31, 2011 by cabooklover

Apparently though, the FPA's find out a day before we do. im so anxious!!! Hi all! I'm currently a Fulbright Grantee in Germany and was active on the 2011-2012 thread last year! I randomly went back onto this site (since I'm also a grad student still doing the whole fellowship thing, ugh) and just saw this comment. I was interested in when I heard back. And you are correct. I got an email on January 21st, while my FPA heard on the 20th. I actually emailed her on the 20th b/c I had heard from other scholars their FPAs told them (even though they aren't supposed to). Mine just said that she was "pleased with the results". And lo and behold, after refreshing my email for probably 12 hours that day, I got my email! Just wanted to say good luck! The waiting is the hardest ... crimson

bdoll
Hi there! ETA applicant to Indonesia... did anyone else apply there because I get the feeling that not many people did which is surprised me. Given the State department's commitment to stronger diplomatic ties to Indonesia, I thought the fulbright program would never be downsized and if anything, expanded. akpoker21
I applied for the ETA to Belarus, though pretty hard about Russia and Ukraine but settled on Belarus because I have never been there and it seems like it would be a great opportunity to teach there and interact with the people. Does anyone have any idea of the competition statistics for 2012-2013?
langelby
Hello everyone! January is here! The long anticipated month!! I agree, that survey email was torture! I immediately filled it out thinking, too, that it may in some way have something to do with my application!! Is anyone here applying for an ETA in France??
jcarp
I didn't apply for an ETA to France, but I did apply for a research grant to France! I'm freaking out right now since France is so damn competitive...What did you propose to do in your application (not familiar with the ETA app so not sure what you write about in there)? Also, where did you ask to be placed?? I would be going to Strasbourg...

It had be better that everyone who applied for a Fulbright, gets one. "Fulbrights for eeeeeeverryone!" If only! But, yeah, as exciting as their Google+ page is, wasn't quite the excitement I was hoping for. ETA applicant to Bosnia (anyone else? ...Bueller?) and waiting. Twiddling my thumbs and waiting. Just waiting. Here's to hoping it's early, though. The notification date is right in the thick of finals, and not getting the Fulbright during finals would probably ruin my GPA. and my hopes and dreams and such, but mostly my GPA. Just sayin'.
