SharperImage Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Great news about UCSC...haha. Does anyone know anything about the admissions process at USC (i.e., do they require an interview for the Social concentration)?? I noticed interview postings on the results page, but I imagine this could only be for clinical. I also emailed my POI last week, and he responded that decisions wouldn't be made for "several weeks", given the undetermined funding situation. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Hope all is well with everyone in this time of self-deprecation and pessimism.
weeble Posted February 8, 2009 Author Posted February 8, 2009 Just a note about UCSC - funding cuts have been extensive, and they are cutting way down on the amount of TA-ships offered. Good luck to everyone applying there! It's really a beautiful place to live and work.
charlotte.willer0320 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hey Everyone, Have any of you heard anything regarding the following schools: Northwestern Harvard University of Pennsylvania University of Virginia Washington University in St. Louis If you could let me know then i can't tell you how much i would appreciate it. This waiting game is just killing me. Best, Charlotte
socialpsych Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Charlotte, I haven't heard from Harvard. Historically it seems like they have notified in early March.
SweeneyAmong Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I've heard nothing from UVA- it's a reach for me though. With them having a relatively early deadline for applying I'd be surprised to not hear from them this week or next. It seems to be taking longer than typical and I'm hoping that's not because the applicant pool was huge beyond all belief. I thought I heard that UPenn or Penn State had sent out some rejections but i can't remember which one now. No news is good news
charlotte.willer0320 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks for the update SocialPsych & SweenyAmong! If any of you guys hear anything on those 5Â schools (U. of Virginia, U. of Pennsylvania, Harvard, Northwestern, WUSTL) in the future then please let me know. Thanks!
SharperImage Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 All I know about Harvard is that Sidanius' lab is not accepting new grad students this year.
socialpsych Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 SI, was that you on the results page? If so...sorry to hear ):
SharperImage Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 SP...ha...no, that wasn't me. However, I do know that I didn't get in either. Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully you guys will have better luck than me...
socialpsych Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hmm, I'm sure it's only a matter of time... If the results poster is here, could you let us know who your POI was? (or let me know via PM?)
MacDuff Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks for the update, SI. I didn't apply to work with Sidanius but I do love his social dominance work. No new news on this end. Waiting...waiting... :|
charlotte.willer0320 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hey Everyone, I found this timeline on the University of Virginia website, and i thought some of you might be interested in it. Date Admission Process Call Department to check status of application May - Dec 1 Receiving applications NO Dec 2 - Feb 15 Sorting applications, entering NO information into database and getting miscellaneous materials together with appropriate applications Feb 16 - April 15 Graduate Committee meeting to YES decide status of applicants and calling to set up interviews. Best of luck! C
charlotte.willer0320 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 The formatting of what i just posted is all messed up. Just to clarify, where it says either "NO" or "YES by the time line, that means either you call during that time to find out the status of your application or you don't call. So don't call them until maybe late February to see what your status is.
Psychosin Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hey just found this website, and by found I mean stopped lurking and decided to join the conversation. Congratulations on those who've been interviewed and accepted for those who are still waiting, I'm in the same boat and just as anxious as the rest of ya. To Weeble. I see that you got accepted to ASU and wanted to ask how the interview went. Was it a phone interview or did you go down there, and if so what did you think of it?
weeble Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 Hi Psychosin, I was accepted to ASU without an interview. I got a phone call from my potential advisor telling me I was accepted and we talked a bit about the research he's doing right now. Their recruitment weekend is in mid-March, so I'll be flying down to Phoenix for that. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions.
TheEzrahite Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Hi guys/competition, I wish I had found this site earlier - the suffering seems a bit easier when you know others are experiencing it too (free experiment idea, anyone?). Anyway, here are my results thus far: Accepted: UConn Interviewed: SUNY Buffalo Waiting: Rochester, UMass, Northeastern, Purdue, Maryland Rejected: U of Missouri So I'll be attending the UConn recruit in 2 weeks. I don't know what happened with Buffalo - interviewed over 2 weeks ago and then haven't heard a sound. Anyone hear anything from these schools yet?

I had a phone interview with SUNY-Buffalo, but was rejected. I also have an interview at Rochester a week from Friday (2/20). I have not been "officially" rejected from Missouri, but I found out from my person of interest that I did not get the interview invite...although I haven't been technically rejected. I do not know anything else though. Good luck!

I had the same experience as you with Missouri: no rejection letter, but my POI decided our interests didn't overlap enough after a few emails. I'm not holding out much hope for Rochester.
blindblonde Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I heard from Buffalo on Jan. 26, a few days after my phone interview. I suppose decisions depend on the individual professors, so it may vary depending on your PoI. Did your PoI say anything during the interview about when he or she would contact you again?
socialpsych Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I've now heard from UC Davis, via telephone from my POI. So it looks like they are indeed doing interview invites this week...maybe gradually since it's on the phone. She first called me yesterday. Good luck everyone!
MacDuff Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Congrats, SocialPsych! I know you were eager to hear from them for the on-campus interview and it looks like things have worked out nicely. Good luck!
SweeneyAmong Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 So... apparently one of my schools has lost one of my transcripts. And therefore they haven't forwarded on my application to the commitee. And they didn't even bother to let me know about it- I had to stalk my application through the most convoluted web system in existence that involved me having to sign up for a blackboard account at the school to check my status. $15 for express delivery. I hate this.
jk1 Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi all, New member here, also a social psych applicant.. socialpsych - I guess i will be seeing you at UC Davis on the 9th! Don't worry, we don't have the same POI because I indicated 2 and they are both males. Also, I've applied to UCSB and my online status still indicates no decision available.. Seeing the results board, I know some people have already been rejected as well as accepted. I'm anxious to find out either way.. Should I prod them and ask what my status is? I'd hate to bother them tho.. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

I hate this. Ugh, that's a pain Sweeney. I can relate. One school I applied to (I won't name which) actually lost my transcript 3(!) times before I finally just faxed my own copy. That was a bizarre experience - it got to the point where the woman at my undergrad registrar would actually laugh when I told her who was calling. It's all about perseverance in this business...
SharperImage Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Anyone here apply to UChicago? I was informed that the adcom would be meeting toward the end of last week, but haven't heard anything nor seen any results postings. I'm not certain that I'll still be a fully functional graduate student after the massive amount of damage that has been inflicted upon my brain and ego throughout this process.
