Waiting it out 2012... 'I've just submitted my application' thread

True, but there are people reporting acceptance emails, and everyone that seems to email about their status gets an email back from the coordinator saying how competitive it has been and that their application was denied...

So I REFUSE to email the coordinator! lol

I think emailing is fine, as long as it's not excessive. Checking in on things is normal, and they're used to it. I emailed about my app status throughout my MA process (applied to 16 schools), and I got into 12. Don't stress! It's not bad luck. :)

I emailed her, short and sweet... just asking if all of the decisions have been made by now, or if the admissions process is still ongoing, because I'm aware a few offers have already been made.

So far everyone that has emailed her has gottne the kiss of death. Lets see how that works for me :)

Yup, emailing her is the kiss of death. Its cool though, at least gives me closure and now I focus on the other 4. I wasn't a good fit for Austin anyway.

"Thanks very much for your interest in our program. While your application was viewed favorably, this year’s applicant pool was particularly competitive. As a result, we are unable to offer admission to you and many other impressive applicants for 2012. I’m sure you will find a program that meets your needs as well or better than the University of Texas."

Ugghhhhhhh....Monday I emailed about interview invites to Emory and they said they were still reviewing applications Tuesday. Wednesday, an invite was posted on the results board, then this morning (Thursday now in Korea) another invite was posted. I am going to assume that I am not being considered at this point.

This has not been a good week.

Well, at least I got my first rejection out of the way. Boulder and Washington are much better fits for me.

Ann Arbor is pretty much shut out. If I cant get into UT, Ann Arbor is not going to be any easier.

I really don't want to go to my state school of LSU....

When I got an invite to the program I had been invited to, I hadn't been checking the results, and just assumed that I was invited when everyone else was (especially from what the graduate secretary said). But, when I went to check on results from years past from that program, I saw someone this application season had posted they got an interview invite a few days before I did! Don't despair yet. :)

Wait I thought that was a social faux to call the schools after a certain time? What's the ruling on this?

Posted

Ehhh depends how late. If you're calling in March, yeah, probably (even February is probably too late)... but I think January would be fine?

i am new here.

this might not follow the trend here but i could use some encouragement. i applied to a swiss university. the applications for masters with full scholarship for international students to cover tuition and expenses began months before the usual application dates. the deadline was 3 weeks before the school online applications started. THE DEADLINE WAS MID DECEMBER.i applied by post and the school confirmed my applications.

i was told the usual waiting period was 4-6 weeks. But waiting is so hard since this is my first time.

i emailed the dept in charge of the scholarship thing and the lady told me the decisions would be ready in march.

is this not too far? i am thinking of writing to the department i applied maybe they could know if i merit an admission or not.

i am anxious cos its the only school i could afford to apply to.

are swiss uni's usually like this? my friends who apply to uk or us schools get results within a month.

Never knew waiting could be this hard.

Results within a month? Not in the U.S except maybe in very rare situations.

I would definitely not write to the department. That could definitely backfire. If they said March, you will have to wait until March.

Posted

emeF hang in there, it's almost getting to that time but the only thing I can personally tell you is to remain optimistic and have a backup plan just in case plan A doesn't totally pan out.

Almost February! Hard to believe we will be through this soon. Anxiety is tough and my diet is swinging everywhere, ha. I just want to start hearing back, but I know most MFA programs are going to take until later in feb/march to give results. A few of my deadlines aren't even until feb 1st so I definitely have a good wait to go.

I feel bipolar on this one. One minute I'm "I've got a great application, I CAN DO THIS :littleengine:" and the other moment I'm all "I'm not good for these programs. YOUUUU WERE ALWAAAYS ON MY MIIIIIIIND."

It's gonna be a long weekend.

I heard that one of my programs will be making final decisions on Monday. I hope this is true but I feel slightly uneasy expecting it to be so. Fingers crossed that I will know something in a few days.

One of my application statuses recently changed to "incomplete." It hadn't said that before, and it indicates that all letters of recommendation, scores, transcripts, and fees have been recieved, and that every question on my application form was answered. Does anyone know what that could mean? I emailed the contact person a few hours ago, but they have yet to respond and seeing as it's 5:00 pm on a Friday, I'm assuming I won't hear back until Monday.... *panic*

To those who shared their stories about long-distance relationships: thank you so much!! It makes me feel a little better about potentially facing a long-distance relationship for quite a few years. I agree that it will likely make our relationship stronger, as it seems to have with others, despite the fact that it will be tough. Good luck to all of you, and stay strong!! Also, it is nice that I will be able to focus on my studies more. Both of us will be very busy this upcoming year (hopefully)!!

My first campus visit is coming up at the end of this week. I'm SUPER nervous, but I'm also very excited. I'll need to keep myself distracted on the plane flight so I don't spend the entire time worrying that I'll make a bad impression... AAH!

I realized today that I should find out from all four programs with a decision or request for interview within the next 2-4 weeks (if not before). Just in time for my birthday, awesome, right?

Got an email from one of my schools saying they hadn't received one of my LORs and my referee is currently incommunicado so I'm sort of @$$ed out right now if I can't get a hold of that professor. This should be a fun weekend :)

Ouch. My sympathy goes out to you. I had worried that something similar might occur with one of my letter writers. (He only communicates in spurts, and disappers for long stretches of time.) For what it counts, I have both read and heard that schools are often very sympathetic when it comes to missing letters. They recongize that you have done your part, and that you cannot control your referee. While I hope that you referee appears soon and straightens all this out, I am confident enough that it will not affect your chances of admission.

At this point I don't know what else to do. I contacted my referees at least two days before all the seperate deadlines to make sure they were aware and that they had all sent in everything needed. At least the school contacted me before the ADCOM meets next week. I still have time to come up with something. If there is a will, I am told, there is a way. :)

I had one of those panic moments yesterday. Although I *know* Duke isn't making decisions until March, the email from Admissions still gave me a heart attack. The panic then made it hard for me to focus on what it said, which was that my application has now moved into "under review." It's not worth freaking out just to know something like that, guys - please don't send me emails! And I thought I was holding it all together really well...

I really did think that I was handling the wait fine, and overall, I am. However, hearing about other people finding out (for other fields) is wearing me down. If they know, why can't I? I'm just getting so jealous of friends being able to plan/know where they'll be living come August.

Also, my reaction yesterday was "How can it take so long to review applications?!?" In my brain, I understand that they need to thoroughly go through tons of applications and yadda yadda yadda, but it's still kinda hard to believe it takes two months to do it. Especially when other places/fields are letting people know in less time. One of my schools is driving me crazy because I don't even know if everything is ok with the application - they don't have a reliable online system and are terrible at actually answering questions. I can't wait til March!

[end freak out - rant]

Good ... don't hold it in ... I've found out that holding back emotion can just be damaging ... I think this is why these boards exist so you can share your experience with those going through the same thing as you
