ellsworthy Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 There have been so many people who tell me that with every year, the competition keeps getting stiffer in terms of applying to grad school. I've already had more than six people tell me to not feel disappointed if I may need to apply again next year. :-( How many of you are reapplying?

LovelyPainter Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I changed my name and took my info off. I got a hit on my website from Yale that was refereed from this forum - so yeah, I may paranoid, but I dont want to screw with my chances. Yeaa, I replied to one of the questions about columbia college and a representative of the school replied underneath. Sooo I'm going to take my mentors advice for sure. Glad its not just me. Thanks for your two cents. When it is all so subjective, I'm fine with being a bit paranoid in wanting to stay anonymous

I've already had more than six people tell me to not feel disappointed if I may need to apply again next year. :-( How many of you are reapplying? This is my second time around. And people have also told me that every year the competition gets stiffer. But keep in mind that people do get in every year, so why not you? I'm trying to be positive without getting my hopes up too high (if that makes any sense) Yeaa, I replied to one of the questions about columbia college and a representative of the school replied underneath. When it is all so subjective, I'm fine with being a bit paranoid in wanting to stay anonymous I've been thinking about what all of you have been saying about the anonymous issue, and I decided that I agree, it's so subjective and there is so much at stake, that even if I don't think any of us have said anything that would be to our discredit, i decided to edit my profile a little. nimda 1
OutWest Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 just curious - did anyone mention critical theory or philosophers in any of their statements? I didn't but I feel I should have... Nope. I showed my Statement to some big-time crit people and they said avoid crit speak like the plague. Just straight-forward and to the point, is what they said they like to see on the Statements when they are reading them.

Paintcutter, it looks like you are applying to only four schools (judging from what you list in your Signature), and three of them are quite difficult to get into (actually, two of them are next to "impossible"). You should look around at more "second tier" schools around the nation, and a lot of them are fully funded...I see a lot of people going for mainly the big names and it's too bad...missing chances.

OutWest Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) She'll get in somewhere, her work is amazing I certainly hope she gets in. But, applying to only four schools (and two are very elite) is taking a chance...regardless, best of luck! Edited January 13, 2012 by OutWest
ellsworthy Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Thx, but you're too kind Mr. no namer. Ugh, I hope those with the power that be think so too! @OutWest - Personally, I don't believe in settling and if I have to do this all over again, then I'll be a regular on here. I had a list of 15 schools initially, but considering that I've been out of school for a bit and still maintaining a solid practice, it makes more sense to just apply to the schools that I'd be completely invested in and happy with getting accepted. Waiting doesn't harm anyone and actually over the past few years, it has really strengthened my endurance and helped me realize that I have to do this and there is no turning back (with or without grad school). I still have those moments when I think, "damn, I should have gone into computer engineering or some lucrative industry," but I guess the more sacrifices you make to continue practicing art, the more you can't live giving it up and feeling like the biggest loser for making all those choices in vain. Well...lol...I'm only speaking for myself and I think waiting ain't too bad if they don't throw me a bone! But...c'mon throw me a.... freakin bone!!!!!
sympatico Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 I agree completely, and yes, it would be nice for them to throw me a bone as well. haha
TheSweetestPainter Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Hi All! I've been following this thread for a while and have found it so helpful. Thought I would finally chime in. Received an in-person interview invite from the University of Chicago early last week....Hope this helps for anyone waiting to hear from them. A great start to this whole process. Cheers!

forestine Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) Eek! The post office lady said my stuff would arrive yesterday, and now I'm freaking out that I forgot something all over again, because I know they have it. Need distraction... Also, quick reply hates me, I'm pretty sure. Edited January 13, 2012 by forestine

TheZane Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Now it is sit and wait time for me. I wonder how this is going to spill into my art... It seems all my worries about deadlines are gone but now I am worrying about whether schools received all of me information. They are all being a little vague about it. There are no notifications for recommendations that went to school who don't use online systems and transcripts are all in conformational limbo. I emailed RISD and they told me they were sifting through mail and that I should try back next week. I assume this is the case for many, that they just collect mail throughout the application time and sort if after the deadline.
Resendes8909 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 One of my rec writer's letters hasn't been received by one of the programs. The deadline is tomorrow and I informed him numerous times since October of the deadline, mailed him stamped and addressed envelopes, etc. He sent his letter to my top choice program, but perhaps he flaked on the others. Frustrating. I am not too concerned... I have a friend who ended up getting accepted to all of the programs he applied to despite having a no-show rec writer. I am sure this one will send the letters as he has already told me multiple times that he would. They'll just be late. I e-mailed my contact at the one dept. and let them know of the situation.

Yeah, in my experience last year, having recs or transcripts that are a little late isn't a huge deal. Most schools are understanding that sometimes it's just out of our control! jldstudio Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) As long as you are comfortable with what you are posting I wouldn't worry. I think it is unlikely anything here would outweigh anything in your application. I agree kazoo, people are pretty understanding at most places too. I've been able to submit scanned copies of transcripts to fill in until mailed copies arrive. So I'm trying to just relax. Edited January 13, 2012 by caus

ellsworthy Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 Thanks Outwest! I don't mind if I have to do this multiple times. I think that over the years, I've built up a thick skin that not getting into a grad program won't do a number on me. I do think that this forum is great and it would be beneficial if schools did utilize this site to their advantage. They could really cut down the amount of emails that they receive from their applicants. I also think that the more informed the applicants are, the better the applicant pool will be. It's always great to find ways to raise the bar for everyone. So for all you guests or edu administrators.... ;) :) Understood! michaelwebster Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 One of my rec writer's letters hasn't been received by one of the programs. For any of you applying next time, if you have 4 people that you can rely on to write letters, I would recommend it. That way if one doesn't make it you should still meet the quota.
losemygrip Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I agree about the concerns regarding Paintcutter's highly selective list, but I have a good feeling about her chances. The work looks really impressive and I think having been out a while has created a maturity that's reflected in these posts (and probably as well in the application). But for the record--everybody should always apply to a wide range of schools!!
forestine Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Not everyone can! Four is the widest range I could afford to apply to.
OutWest Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Not everyone can! Four is the widest range I could afford to apply to. You should look into Fee Waivers. I've gotten a couple schools to waive fees because I am a poor student
