0% Confidence of Acceptance

Recommended Posts

I wish they would just put us out of our misery already and send the rejections.

I already know that Chicago, Duke and Stanford have probably already finished letting anyone relevant (ie not me) know, so why not just let me off the hook already?

And checking this site is not helping the anxiety--you see someone has heard from one of your schools and you're checking your email every five minutes and assuming that if you haven't heard in a few days that you are rejected. I'm thinking about going cold turkey and not coming on here again until/if I've had my first acceptance--except to post my rejections on the results board so I can feel really truly sorry for myself--ha ha...Then again, it's nice to be able to be in touch with others in the same boat when family and friends might sympathize, but just don't understand what's you're dealing with.

Definitely. This site is not good for my anxiety levels either, though in so many other ways it is great - especially the community.

I'm already thinking about what do with my life when twelve rejections come through. GTA-ing a couple of courses 'til June, then nothing: the future as yawning abyss. I think I'll have to flee because of the shame; in hindsight, I wish fewer people knew I was applying! Perhaps I'll go teach English in some country where nobody knows me and nobody gives a damn.

I created this thread, but I can no longer be in it. I really hope everyone in here gets in!

Haha, that's a nice oblique way to seque into the 100% Confidence club. :D Congrats on your acceptance to Buffalo!

Did I write this in my sleep? Because seriously. Exactly my thought process (and I also applied to 12). What country would you want to go to if you had your choice? I've already been investigating quarantine requirements for my pup in case we have to flee...

Thanks, Bespeckled! I hope you hear back soon and I hope maybe we both get into Yale AS! 100% Confidence club... I should start that thread specifically for people in here.

BTW, all that stuff about leaving the country definitely went through my head when I was still waiting on an acceptance. Also, I thought a lot about applying for all kinds of jobs in order to avoid going back to waiting tables. It was pretty unsettling. In hindsight, I think joining the Peace Corps could've been really cool. But I will definitely take what I got.

Hey, congrats on your acceptance TripWillis. I too think Peace Corps would be cool, and definitely would consider it were I a US citizen.

From my cursory research (earlier today), it would appear that Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and South Korea are decent destinations if one is looking to get a bunch of money/savings together. I'd much rather be somewhere like Portugal, Spain, Italy, or Turkey, but maybe it's time I started being 'responsible' and 'realistic'...

Maybe this offer is a little defeatist and premature, but I literally just finished three years in the Peace Corps as a TEFL and if anyone finds themselves shut out at the end of this and finds their thoughts turning that way (or if you're just curious at the moment, perhaps feeling anxious), please feel free to drop me a line. I like talking about it (well, typing about it anyway) and I will give you every dirty detail I've got.

Anyway, hurray for acceptances!

(Edited to add that there's also this: http://www.jetprogramme.org/ which I haven't done but friends of mine have. And JET, unlike Peace Corps, is paid and not - to my knowledge, anyway - limited to US citizens.)

OH MY GODDDDDDDD!!!! I GOT IN TO UCR!!!!!!!

YAYYYYYYYYYY! Congrats, Timshel!! I'm so happy for you!!!!!!

I got into Indiana today, and it's the most AMAZING feeling! I've been literally skipping around all day! I'm so glad to see regular Grad Cafe-ers having so much success, so early in the season! GO US!

Congrats bdon19 and Timshel! Even though I haven't been very active on this board, I've been pulling for you guys all along! You two and others are the heart of the Grad Cafe community. Congrats!

Timshel, I've got a few friends at UCR and had a chance to participate in their annual grad student conference last April, and I can tell you that you'll be very happy there should you decide to take their offer, particularly if you're into ethnic lit! I would've applied there if the fit between my research interests and those of their Americanists were better.

Hoping there's more good news coming everyone's way!

TIMSHEL AND BDON! Oh my god! Congrats! If we were all in NYC, I'd say we should all go get blitzed on champagne! I'm almost more psyched for the regulars getting in than for me.

I feel the same way. (Okay, maybe I'm most psyched for myself, but still.) I can't believe how awesome it is that we've done so well so far, and it's not even the 15th yet! Champagne sounds fabulous right now. In fact, I'm off to the bar right now. I have a couple of congratulatory (read: free) drinks waiting for me tonight. :D

Congrats to everyone who recently got acceptances. I applied to rhet/comp programs and am still waiting to hear from schools. This site is definitely great and I appreciate all the kindness from everyone on here.
