Vanderbilt for me :)

Woo! Congrats! I bet you'll love it, but I'm also sad we won't be cohort mates. :( It was nice meeting you anyway.

I'll be at CUNY! It was my only option, but it probably would have been my first choice in any scenario.

It's not a bad first choice at all. B) Congrats!

I wish I could post a final decision. Ugh. The thought of having to wait another week.

You know what? I'm okay with it. Whatever happens, things'll be great. I need to stop worrying.

Thanks! I hope I will, I really enjoyed my visit there. Me too :( and likewise, I'm sure we'll meet again eventually! Also, sending good vibes your way for Rutgers, though I know CUNY's a great option too! I can't imagine the waiting agony at this late stage in the game :(

I am into 20-21st century lit. and critical theory (think Hegel, Barthes, Derrida...) I have full scholarships from UNC Chapel Hill and Iowa for my PhD (straight out of undergrad). I visited both. Love them both. Don't know what to do. How impt is rank anyway? I might care more in six years. Do I go for one that might be more challenging, or one that would make me happy? I'm totally lost. How did you decide? Ultimately what did it come down to?

If you do equally well at each school, I would suppose you'll be more successful on the job market graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill. It's impossible for anyone less informed to tell you one way or another, but I would weigh how much more you like Iowa versus the potential opportunities you'll get with a much more heralded school on your resume.

I'm not sure why someone dinged Galoup for this (if one has a difference of opinion, they may as well share their perspective). I can say that my professors would agree with the above statement by Galoup (For my undergraduate degree I went to a school similar to Iowa in the midwest..and yes, we talk about these things). Even if there's no objective truth to rankings in that way, I think it would be in one's best interest to be aware of varying "perceived" prestige when considering such a huge decision (And I would appreciate fellow gradcafer's honest opinions on that, despite how arbitrary such assignments of prestige may be).

All that about prestige may very well be moot, however, depending on your interests and the faculty you'd work with.

I would go where you feel you would be happiest. If you're happy, all the other things (doing well, balancing your time, bouncing back from minor setbacks) will be that much more manageable.
