CSU'S: Fall 2013

I didn't get a confirmation. I emailed director of admission but he never replied so I contacted the social work dept and asked if they received everything and they said yes. Takes them less than 15 seconds to check if you give them your sjsu id#. As long as you submitted everything before the deadline you're good. I believe the first review will be getting rid of those who don't meet requirements or haven't submitted all documents. The second part of reviews are letting in people who work for the state or have more years in social work experience in and then everyone else. The best part I like about this is that majority of them will probably chose part time first so they can work and go to school at the same time without losing income so those who applied for full time without all those experience have a good chance of getting in.

excellent to know!! I'll go ahead and give them a call just to check everything.  Glad to know it doesn't take a lot of time because I was worried about it being a hassle for them to take phone calls.  I also emailed Barry Goldman-Hall a while back about the SW app that was at the bottom of the page and never received a response.... weird thing with that was that I filled that in quite a while back (Nov-ish 2012) and got a confirmation email that it was received but the automated response hadn't been updated so it said something like, "confirming your application for the MSW 2011"    Anyways, not terribly worried about that because I have the confirmation email so it's easily proven that it was sent in.

Hi everyone. I decided late in the game to apply to MSW programs and submitted my applications either on the deadline or a week before. Does anyone know if people ever get accepted when they apply this late? I understand CSU's do rolling admissions (I applied to CSUF, CSUN, CSULB), and am starting to freak out.

From what I know CSU's don't do rolling admissions, however they do have a wait list. CSUF & CSULB are already sending out their acceptance letters so I'm not sure where your applications will stand

  • 3 weeks later...

For those who applied to SJSU, did you receive any sort of confirmation email that your Section II items were received?  It's making me a little nervous but another poster commented that they wouldn't even be looking at apps till mid-Feb according to their Social Work office so hoping that is why I've yet to have any confirmation....

Hello! I applied to SJSU as well, but pretty late in the game,  and yes i received a confirmation  that my application had been received. But no confirmations for extra items (e.g LORs)...hope they got em! lol......have you heard anything back yet? My admission status changed to "referred to graduate dept" does anyone know what that even means?

thanks!!!!  Good luck and congrats all!

I only received confirmation that my app was complete once I emailed the admin assistant, Molly Marquez.

My status changed to "Referred to grad dept" quite a while back though after they received and reviewed my transcripts.  When I checked the definitions for it it says that it means that the grad school has cleared you for attending SJSU via their reqs. (3.0 gpa, etc.) and has now referred you to whatever grad dept. you have sent your materials too.  Back in November when I applied just to the grad school and hadn't turned anything in yet to the MSW program it said that getting into SJSU doesn't mean admittance to the program so I assume that's what "referred to grad dept" means (passed step 1: getting into SJSU period) lol

Oh !! Thanks for clearing that up. So,it makes sense that I got that notice late, as I applied late lol...do you know when we should hear back from them regarding admittance? I was searching this site earlier and I saw people saying they received phone calls in early March (Fall 12)...wonder if that holds true for Fall 13

So I did PM one person that i noticed had been accepted/called by SJSU for MSW and he had been notified March 6th during the 2012 cycle, but he had also turned in his materials Jan. 6th.  I scoured the site to see if the deadlines were different last year but there's no mention of deadlines from previous cycles so no help there :/

Someone else called about their app just last week and was told that sometime "mid-march or later" the acceptances would begin rolling out.  I'm super anxious now that we're getting into the first real week of March.  The person I PM'd did also say that acceptances continued all the way through May though so I don't know what means as far as timelines or how unnerved one should get if they don't hear something IMMEDIATELY at the vague-ish time of "Mid-March or later" lol

Received a call and acceptance from SJSU's MSW program Friday, March 1st at 5:20. :)!! He asked that I make my decision by the middle to the end of March. I'm interested in the Children and Families concentration with a certificate in collaborative response to family violence. I'm waiting on Berkeley's MSW program before I make my decision. Good luck to everyone!

Hi lalaloopsy, I went to their info session and he said that they do not do early admissions. I applied the day the application was due. I wish you the best of luck and I'm happy to answer any more questions. I know this process is very stressful. I went through it last year.

Yes they do. Unfortunately I don't exactly have the type of related social work experience they desired. I'm a clinical assistant for a behavior company that does early intervention for children with autism/ mental health and turns out it was not the desired type of experience they wanted from applicants when I asked around. Even if its in the mental health category. Sucks but that's probably about the only experience I have close enough to it. Just hoping I have a leg up than other applicants in the pool. *fingers crossed* Hoping I get to join that "relief" group soon lol

O wow really? That sounds like awesome experience to me. I would think it would be great experience especially if you applied for a mental health concentration? Did you apply to UCLA? I think they loooove that kind of experience.....omg this is torture, i cant believe they are already admitting peoples! well at least we can wait in misery together. Thanks for the heads up lol i wont feel too bad now if i don't hear anything positive back. I had NO idea SJSU msw program was this competitive and experience heavy, i would've spent the past year differently ...

Yes. I have 2+ years of volunteer coordination experience through AmeriCorps with a child advocacy agency and 3 years as a volunteer child advocate. I have 200+ hours as a school social work intern. I also have a few years combined experience in case management for people who were incarcerated and as a therapeutic intervention specialist for a child with autism. The are also some shorter volunteer experiences with my community. I made sure to participate in community or agency trainings whenever possible, especially if they were free (and listed them on my resume) I really hope this is helpful.

Did anyone receive an email from the  admissions coordinator at CSUN stating that their application is complete and will now be forwarded to the Admissions committee for review? I received a similar email on 1/30, only tonights email stated that if an applicant advances to the next round they will commence interviews beginning mid March through April. Was just wondering if any CSUN applicants received a similar email tonight!? ;)
