I've applied to three schools, York-Ryerson (ComCult), Carleton (Communiction) and Western (Media Studies). I've noticed that carleton and western have both begun admitting students into their respective programs. Anybody else waiting to hear back from these places? I'm so anxious, I just want an answer already... I was with Laura yesterday and she was laughing when I went on this website in front of her I also applied to Carleton and haven't heard anything. From what I understand, they only call for PhD acceptances. Maybe I'm wrong, and it's all department based - I am only going by my experience right now. It was the latest deadline (Feb 15th) so it's the one I'm least impatient about. Good luck though, it looks like an awesome program, it willl be a tough decision between it and a comm phd if i get into both. Did you apply for Co-op or non? I'm so anxious, I just want an answer already... Ha, it looks like we applied to the exact opposite schools for Comm phds. Don't feel too bad at least it looks like there's some movement on carelton and western. I'm waiting on McGill and SFU comms departments to hurry up and do something. I get the impression its going to be a while yet. From what I've seen about all the comms departments in canada based on results from previous years, late march seems to be their prefered time to finally reply. Oh yeah XDM is definitely a unique program, I couldn't find anything else like it except in the states. I also applied for CommCult at Ryerson. So, I am a bit on edge. hahah... you've already done an MA degree, I'm guessing, since you've applied for your PHD? I'm going for the MSc program and I have rave reviews from my supervisor of choice and good grades BUT U of T is one of those schools where a commitee decides for the entire department so it's a bit random. Fingers crossed. What kind of masters are you going for? Ma, or Msc and in archaeo or sociocultural or physcal anth? Good luck! Calgary also has a great school. I applied to MSc in physical. I had eyed the MIT comp media studies program before but getting in there would be a nightmare i expect. I actually only found about the XDM program on Feb 1st after I thought I was done applying, it suits me so well that I sent frantic emails begging references to write one more letter for me. And yes, I have an MA, or am in the last stages of getting it any way, at the MRP stage at this point, finish in july. I am doing the Royal Roads hybrid online/in person MA in professional communication. I think there are certain paralells between it and Ryerson's commcult program, except that Ryerson is more of a known quantity. Although the prof supervising my MRP is also curently teaching at Ryerson I believe. All in all, Royal Roads has been a bit hit and miss for me but I seem to have made the most of it. I'm more of an exception than a rule for having rigorous theoretical background in my BA (UBC English Lit and Philosophy) and a keen interest in theory and academia. I am very much on tenderhooks waiting to hear because I don't know how much of a benefit my MA will be, I am hoping an MA is an MA and the school won't matter as much. I've done well, have an interesting research topic and managed to weasel myself a conference credit at a big american school's comm dept's grad student conference. Not going to McGill in the fall. it was expected but I wish the first response had been better news. Anyway, for anyone else waiting to hear from McGill for the Comm studies PHD program it looks like they are starting to reply. Good luck to the rest of you. And, I will never be over theory. I am over merely writing and reading theory though. The XDM appeals to the phenomenologist in me, getting to experience theory in news ways by using it to craft material things just sounds awesome and a great way to get at ideas that might not be as evident when presented in the form of rational argument. Because the program is so different, but complimentary to, other reading and writing theory programs I've done I am very tempted to take a year or two off for the change of pace before applying to phds again with another MA to my name. The co-op program with a google headquarters so close to campus makes the nerdboy in me squee with delight when I think of all the possibilities. I should mention that critical theory of technology is my research interest so getting hands on experience so that i might be able to get a private sector research job would also just be amazing. I am definitely hoping that the program being underated and obscure works to our advantage. I only heard about it because there was an email circulated through the Canadian Communication Association about it, my friend and classmate from my current program is a member and saw it and forwarded it me because she thought I might be interested. One of my very good friends is currently at waterloo and yet I had still not heard of the program before that. It definitely seems like somethign that's still not very well known, but it seems like a good sort of program for waterloo to have to improve its humanities offerings. I agree that the rhetoric option seems decent too, although I'm not sure it seems as in line with Waterloo's general reputation. I think having a hands on degree from what is basically canada's best engineering/technology school might have more cache. I have been really itching to do something more hands on and constructive in the past few years, with critical theory it often feels like it's all inconsequential estoerica that only tears down, this might be a nice antidote. It really will be a hard choice between this and SFU for a phd (mcgill finally made their expected rejection official today) really hard. SFU is a great fit for me and what i do, but this program would give me an even wider base and new perspective on what I do. I'd just have so many more options both academically and career wise outside of academia I expect. I glanced over the critical media lab projects a while ago, I'll have to go refresh myself on what they've been doing while i wait to hear. I've been accepted for MA in English programs at both schools, but I'm having a difficult time figuring out which school is a better fit. UWO is offering me 17,000, while McMaster has promised 15,000, and there are a few people at both schools that I'd love to work with. Currently, I'm living in Taiwan, so I can't really hop on the 401 or 403 to make a formal visit (though I wish I could). I didn't expect to get it since I picked the first research idea that came to mind and just ran with it despite how incredibly stupid it was, but it does give me hope that the department was waiting to hear about my funding before offering me admission - Carleton started adjusting internal funding according to external funding. Come to think of it, Ottawa doesn't offer internal funding to people with external funding either. I never thought not getting any money would turn out to be good news.
