Activationenergy Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 No, I haven't. In past years, they've sent their invites out pretty late, toward the very end of January. I take it you haven't heard anything from them either? Nope, but maybe this week!
elanorci Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Is anyone going to this week's Caltech Biology interview? I'm wondering if I should have received an itinerary by now - I have no idea who I'm interviewing with!

That's what happened with my last interview.
knightrunner Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I got my rejection letter today from Stanford. I am in the midwest, and applied to the genetics track. For everybody that receive there rejection letter from Stanford does it say "we have received a record-breaking number of excellent applications. The faculty admissions committees have had to make many difficult decisions..."

But I'm sure it's true that they get a lot of applications. They are Stanford after all. nermah1 and Chimeric Phoenix 2

I'm wondering if I should have received an itinerary by now - I have no idea who I'm interviewing with! How does that work exactly? I was told when I called the graduate school that they don't even necessarily do interviews. I still haven't heard from them. Is this their first weekend? Do you know when the others are? I am curious about how the event goes - could you let us know once you come back from it? Thanks.

Huh, strange! This is indeed their first weekend; the other one is Feb 13 - 14. I'll definitely post about how it went when I get back. (:
katethekitcat Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 So much biology here so little biochemistry. I wish I'd gotten a minor in biochemistry. Does that count? pgajwani 1
kimthi1011 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Hey guys, I've been holding this thought for a while, and I am looking for your perspective on this: So in early January, I got an email saying that I am selected for an interview at UT Southwestern (of all the schools in my school list, this is my top choice), I was very surprised and excited. They provide me a link to register for the interview dates and the track of interest. I was pretty sure that I would choose the earlier interview, which is Feb 7th, rather than the later one, which is in March 22nd. But somehow, this was so important to me that I postponed it. Thinking back, maybe it was because before UT Southwestern, I also had another interview invite from UGA, and somehow I had already talked to the POI and mentioned that I will go to the interview on the same day of Feb 7th. I could choose the second interview weekend instead and corrected it with the POI. But well, after I finally wanted to hit enter for UT Southwestern, I discovered that I only had the option of March. I thought: Fine!, I am gonna go ahead and book the flight for UGA interview the date I told the POI (Feb7th), and I did it. But then, two days later, UT Southwestern contacted me with a pending flight ticket for the Feb 7th interview. I emailed them immediately to explain that I didn't have the earlier option the moment I hit enter, and so I'd already planned for something else. I feel extremely uneasy with that decision, because to me UT southwestern>>> UGA, but at that time, the flight to UGA has already been booked, and the ticket had been emailed over for reimbursement, so I didn't want more trouble. Now, I wonder if my chance of admission for UT Southwestern will be less because I chose the later interview? I convinced myself that it won't be, since in the beginning, they gave me both options, and so it will be unfair that one of the option will lead to less chance of admission. But in second thought, I take so much risk in a (perhaps) bad decision. What do you guys think about my situation?

I'm wondering if I should have received an itinerary by now - I have no idea who I'm interviewing with! I am - I got an itinerary via email last night, but I had to ask the program coordinator which faculty I'd be meeting with. She responded by the end of the day. The rest of the days are full of talks/information sessions/activities.

jwnichol1 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 This is very depressing news Yeah I was really hoping to get a Brown MCB interview. The location and research are perfect for me. Oh well!

MackF Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 This is the time of year I get really nervous. I haven't gotten any interviews yet. I know two of my programs were Jan 1 or 5 and two others were Jan 15, but I've pretty much given up hope on Pitt and Florida. I got my interview email for U of Florida a few weeks ago. Pitt IBGP I haven't heard back from but one of my lab mates has her interview there in a few weeks (Feb 20 I think?).
RR1 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Has anyone heard from the GEMS program at the University of Illinois - Chicago?

I'm wondering if I should have received an itinerary by now - I have no idea who I'm interviewing with! Not the same school, but when I interviewed at WUSTL, they actually didn't tell me who I would be interviewing with until the day before I arrived (Wednesday). But you could always make a quick call/email to the program coordinator! elanorci 1
jl2782 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) Vanderbilt IGP acceptance! Congrats!!!! Do you know if Vanderbilt is having any other interview weekends? Thanks:-) Edited January 28, 2014 by jl2782
biohopeful91 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Do you know if Vanderbilt is having any other interview weekends? Thanks:-) I just got a Vanderbilt IGP interview offer yesterday and had the choice of 2 weekends -- March 14th or March 28th. I'm pretty positive there are earlier dates as well.

teddybong Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Hey guys, I'm wondering how informal meetings with professors who are not your interviewers would contribute to the acceptance chance? Cuz I feel like those are my best conversations compared to the ones I had with faculty members I didn't request. It is so much easier to talk to someone who knows your work and you can see yourself contributing to their work...

Justin123 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 And here go the mass rejection emails from MIT Biology! MIT was such a pain. They don't respond to emails, phone calls etc. Wouldn't have chosen this program anyway (they don't really have plant biology, I don't know why I applied to this program in the first place...). Anyway, sorry for those who cared about the program. My Berkeley rejection was pretty painful, so I know how much it can hurt...
