drfuzz Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 UC school emails (at least the automated ones) tend to go out around midnight PST. Yes, my UCLA rejection last night came out in the middle of the night.
MastersHoping Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I'm surprised that so many people seem to be getting rejected... it was my impression that masters programs were generally not that selective and UCLA had a relatively high acceptance rate... Sorry to hear that you were rejected, drfuzz!
Hige Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Thanks for the condolence Masters, but it was for the UCLAs PhD program. It's all good though I got into my top 2 (MA) choices, so I wouldn't have gone anyways. Still would have been nice for the ego though. (^。^) Hope it turns out well for you Masters!
MossTracks Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Anyone else get into University of Michigan for MA in SE Asian Studies? Got it through an email this week. Nothing was mentioned about funding or anything. Also got into Northern Illinois University for SE Asian Studies as well. Best of luck everyone.
MastersHoping Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 OMG JUST GOT INTO GEORGETOWN!!!! TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THAT ONE TODAY! Yay!
saltome Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 OMG JUST GOT INTO GEORGETOWN!!!! TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THAT ONE TODAY! Yay! Grats MastersHoping! Good way to kick off the weekend.
minion.banana Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I've heard back from Berkeley (reject), UW JSIS- China Studies (admit) and Michigan- China studies (admit). Still waiting to hear from USC, and also waiting to hear about financial aid, FLAS, etc! UW and Michigan are my top 2, though.
mungosabe Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 OMG JUST GOT INTO GEORGETOWN!!!! TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THAT ONE TODAY! Yay! Me too! So excited, it was my number one choice Congratulations
MastersHoping Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 mungosabe: Check your inbox I sent you a message! Maybe we'll be cohort mates at GTown!
saltome Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Grats everyone on the recent acceptances! I've heard back from Berkeley (reject), UW JSIS- China Studies (admit) and Michigan- China studies (admit). Still waiting to hear from USC, and also waiting to hear about financial aid, FLAS, etc! UW and Michigan are my top 2, though. Hey Andrea, I also got accepted at U of Mich for their EAS: China MA. Are you thinking of hitting up their visit weekend? Also, I am accepted at IU-Bloomington for their EAS MA, and U of Chicago for their MAPH (but will definitely be turning that one down). Five acceptances of nine apps so far, thank god for choices! I think those of us who applied to Yale / Stanford / Harvard will be hearing back in the next two weeks, according to previous results.
MastersHoping Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 UCLA just sent me their decision... rejected! But no big deal! Already got into GTown
ragunz Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Grats all who have received more admissions! Mastershoping congrats again for your additional acceptance news! Can I ask you a question if you don't mind ? I actually received offer from MAPSS yesterday; but funding isn't really great for this (only 1/3 tuition) How do you think of the program..? I am still leaning more toward accepting UIUC MA offer (full funding + TA) the thing is UIUC does not have Korean historian, but only one koeran anthropoligist (but very well known in academia) with whom i have worked for almost 2 years of my undergrad.. Only reason that i am considering MAPSS despite the substantial lack of finanancial aid is Bruce Cumings, as his previous research seems greatly fit to my interest as well... Do any of your MAPSS friends have him as their thesis advisor? I really would want to know what kind of person he is as a mentor/advisor Thanks!
MastersHoping Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 ragunz, congrats on MAPSS! By the looks of it, I would suggest you go to UIUC. UIUC is a great school, and masters programs are very expensive. I don't know what you want to do in the future, but if you want to go into academia, the TA experience would also help you at UIUC. Do you want to do Korean history? Could you explore Korean history through an anthropological lens? If so, I would still consider UIUC. Bruce Cumings is good, and I've gone to a few of his lectures and sat in on a few classes and he is pretty famous (but don't forget, also a little controversial...) but I don't think it's worth choosing a program based on him alone. Ahh unfortunately, the people I know in MAPSS largely don't really do Korean anything and they don't have him as an advisor. Sorry! Let me know what you decide!
ragunz Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Ah, I see, Thank you so much for your feedback, and yes I am (for now) planning on going to phd program after pursuing my masters. Modern korean history would be my focus i hope, and there is a high chance that I would utilize anthropoligical discipline to study korean history. I mean, there are modern chinese and japanese historians too in the department so i wouldn't miss out (too) much on modern history of east asia in general. So yes, like you suggest, I also think not that many offers can beat the one UIUC has offered me. I guess you're right that I shouldn't really choose a program based on one or two faculty, but then again,, I just never had a chance to take modern history course taught by the ones i admire in the field (namely, Carter Eckert and Cumings) so I guess this is what keeps bothering me to even put MAPSS into my consideration despite the clear reality that going to MAPSS will certainly load me with student loans. Still waiting on two more schools, but I think I would probably get rejected or admitted with very limited or no funding.. so I think those two will most likely the all available options i woudl have Thanks again though!
skylarking Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 he is pretty famous (but don't forget, also a little controversial...) Came here to say this. We use his history book because we pretty much have to (Carter Eckert's is so much better and I wish we'd used that) and the way he writes about Japan is so questionable. It's not that what he says is entirely wrong, it's that it's not entirely right and horribly biased. I know people (and this rings true for me, also) who have deliberately avoided Chicago because of Bruce Cumings. I would take Nancy Abelmann over Bruce Cumings any and every day of the week. Cumings was trained under Palais (like all my advisors and pretty much everybody in the field) but honestly, I don't think you'd get a great deal out of Cumings. Eckert is a totally different story and if I were still doing historical anth, I would absolutely have gone for Harvard (again). You're absolutely free to disagree, of course, but there are such better historians and anthropologists of Korea out there.
kindkw123 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Wow it's been a crazy two weeks here. Gratz on everyone who got accepted. It seems like most of us are just waiting on Stanford / Yale / Harvard now.
MastersHoping Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 ^ and Duke too, well for me at least. Those are the four I have left to hear from.
minion.banana Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Grats everyone on the recent acceptances! I'd like to go to the visit weekend, but it depends on if they are able to give me some of the travel funds they mentioned. I've contacted them for more info! I'm in NC so I'd have to fly in.
yuanzhu Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Where are these Harvard RSEA decisions... I hope that they make an exception and inform me electronically, cuz most mail that's sent to my village never makes it
Tinman Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 No worries yuanzhu!!! If you email the committee and explain your situation maybe they will make an exception for you. Plus, I think you would be able to see the results on the website once a decision is made!!
kindkw123 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Where are these Harvard RSEA decisions... I hope that they make an exception and inform me electronically, cuz most mail that's sent to my village never makes it Where do you live in China?
kindkw123 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Duke and Stanford released decisions today. How was the decision sent out?
saltome Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Duke and Stanford released decisions today. Yeah, Stanford woke me from a beautiful 20-min nap to tell me, "Hell, no!" They were also the one school I changed my SoP for, so prolly fit was an issue. Duke I still haven't heard back from... Good luck all!
