Hey,

I'm currently a first year in I/O at UGA. All of the professors here admit their students at their own time, so don't worry if you haven't heard anything. If I remember correctly I heard mid-february last year via phone call that I was accepted, and set up a visit the following weekend, which was when I immediately knew UGA was the school for me!

Let me know if I can answer any of your questions about UGA! :)

Awesome, thank you so much! I'm sure I'll have more questions once I find out more information about the status of my application. My sister actually graduated from UGA, and it's only about three hours from my home town, so I'm pretty familiar with both the university and Athens. It's one of my top choices, so I'm practically on the edge of my seat waiting to hear back, haha. Fingers crossed! :)

Haven't heard anything since the last email from the graduate secretary in mid Jan.

Decisions have been made. About 4-5 offers out of 12 out of 20.

Others were wait listed.

Just received an email from a POI at Wright State asking for a time to "chat" by phone.  I don't know if it will be a telephone interview or what, so didn't post it in the results board yet.  If you applied to Wright State, I guess they are starting to contact folks now.  :)

So if I haven't been contacted, is that a waitlist? Or rejection?

If you are not in the 20 it should be a rejection, in other cases I am not sure.

I think you can contact your POI to see if you are in the waiting list.

So I am curious if I have a fighting chance of getting into a PhD program for I/O. Overall GPA with a major in psych 3.75, psyc GPA 3.9, Quant 150, Verbal 164, An 3.5. I have one year of work experience in human resources and I was a RA during my undergrad for a year and a half in a social psyc lab. Any input is appreciated.

Hi Melissa Jo,

From what I've seen and heard so far, your Quant score is borderline/low for PhD programs.  However, that doesn't mean you don't have a shot.  It may mean you need to aim for schools that usually accept those with lower GRE scores.  If you haven't already looked, there is a great listing of grad programs at www.siop.org.  You can search by degree so you can look at the average accepted GREs for PhD programs or for master's programs.

Best of luck to you!

Hey guys, I know this has been done countless times before but can someone give me a feel of how they think my responses from schools will be?

Major: Psychology B.A

GPA: 3.633

Major Gpa: 3.86

GRE "math": 141 (11th percentile)

GRE "verbal": 153 (58th percentile)

Writing: 4 (54th percentile)

Research experience:

1. Cognitive Development Psychology Research Lab - 2 years.

2. I/O Psychology Research Lab - 1 year.

3. Sleep/Cognition Psychology Research Lab - 1 year.

Work Experience:

1. Dabbed in various jobs here and there, most prominent: Changed the dynamics of a real estate firm by consulting their broker - (who wrote me a strong letter of recommendation)

I know my Math GRE is pretty low (my worst subject), and my Verbal is average but I did do well (A-) in a Statistical psychology course and I'd say I have pretty decent letters of recs.

Should I be worried because of my GRE scores? Anything would help, thanks guys.

Are you applying to PhD programs?  Some of the schools I applied to state they take a holistic approach in considering applications; a weakness in one area can be offset by stellar qualifications in another area.  That said, I think by "stellar" they may mean things like publications or research fellowships or at least independent research projects under your belt.  Or a stellar GPA.  However, schools may put more weight on the GRE when comparing applicants because it is the one standardized measure that they can use to compare applicants from different schools who have taken different coursework.

I did talk about my work experience in my statements, but I talked about it in terms of having skills and experience (teamwork, leadership, etc) relevant to doing research.  However, I also had good solid GRE scores, a 4.0 Psych GPA, and independent research projects under my belt.  So it's hard to say if what I wrote in my statements helped my cause (though it doesn't seem to have hurt.)

Have you applied to master's programs?  I think with your work experience, GPA, and those GRE scores, you would be a contender for master's programs.  I am unsure about the non-academic reference letter as well. Some of the program websites specifically say they are looking for letters of recommendation that speak to your ability to do research.

Fit is another big consideration with programs.  If your research experiences and interests fit well with a program, your chances would go up somewhat.

Hey, UIUC doesn't do individual POI's. They accept you as a cohort and you decide who you wanna work with after getting there. That's what both current professors (they called to give me more detail about the program cuz i asked which POI i'd been accepted under as well) and past students have told me.

Thanks  :)

Yup. Official ones have not gone out yet. They're coming out in the next few days.

I think they will go out post the visitation weekend which is this coming weekend. Hope that's helpful!
