newpollution Posted February 3, 2014 Share Posted February 3, 2014 Should also add that I've applied at: Concordia (MPPPA), University of Ottawa (MA Political Science, GSPIA), Carleton (MA Political Science), University of Toronto (MA Political Science), Simon Fraser (MA Political Science) and University of Victoria (MA Political Science). Also might apply to University of Amsterdam this weekend but haven't yet made up my mind. I did too! Very surprised to see them e-mail out results already. Unfortunately it appears as if I didn't get any funding as there was nothing attached with the PDF they sent along. While the lack of funding isn't a deal breaker for me I'm likely to decline U of O's offer as it was pretty far down my list anyways. Congrats! I applied to NPSIA and also LSE. Hard to say but U of T would be very hard to turn down and Carleton would also be pretty high up on my list. Amsterdam seems pretty fantastic too but the cost of living is way higher and the program unfortunately doesn't really focus on my area of research (multiculturalism and diversity). Anyways I'm a little confused about the funding regarding GSPIA. While I didn't see anything in my e-mail or attached documents regarding funding, the GSPIA website states that: "The Faculty of Social Sciences has a minimum funding policy that guarantees at least $16,500 for the first year of study in a Masters program to all eligible students." I've sent them an e-mail asking for clarification because that statement seems pretty clear that all those accepted to the program are funded. Highly doubt that I'll hear back from many (if any) of the other programs by March 3rd. Seems like I'll have to accept GSPIA and then take the $500 deposit hit if another school I prefer accepts me. Anyways I found out from uOttawa that my admission average was calculated using my older transcript from December and not the one that includes my most recent grades which I sent to them a couple weeks ago. After I e-mailed them an unofficial copy and sent in another official one they e-mailed me back offering me the Graduate Studies Scholarship worth 6K per year. I am however a bit confused as to whether or not I would also be getting the Admissions Scholarship which is around 16.5K per year (and requires an 8.0/10 over the last 60 credits). Since my average over the last 60 credits is a 8.15/10 it seems like I would be getting this as well but they made no mention of the Admissions Scholarship on the letter... poliscilady Posted February 12, 2014 Share Posted February 12, 2014 I'm guessing everyone will start to hear back early March - last year for MA programs I heard back early February from SFU (Feb 6, accepted), and then from UBC, UVIC, and Queen's (all acceptances) within the first two weeks of March. Going by last year's results, UBC gave out offers (and rejected others) during the reading week. Hopefully, they would do the same this year. PhD applicant here to Queens, UWO and UVic. ....The waiting is killing me. Compounded by the fact I have no idea what my odds are. What's your focus? And which prof did you contact at Queens. My ranking of the clusters are 1) International Economic Policy 2) International Organizations and Global Public Policy 3) International Development Policy. I'm an international student, did a BSc in Econ with grades far from great though I do have a fair bit of work experience. I suspect you may have the advantage having worked with these profs before. I did contact Prof. MacDonald too. (As well as Moore & Lister). But, Dr. MacDonald responded (she was so very nice and was amendable to taking on my research proposal - keeping my fingers crossed). And for UVic, I contacted Dr. Eisenberg, whose interest is also on identity politics, but with particular reference to minority rights. Eisenberg is pretty awesome too and she was very accommodating. Both are incredible profs, I'd be honored to work with either. So, praying for good outcomes across the board. It seems like Canadians apply for 3-5 schools whereas Americans apply to more than 5 schools. Just an observation based on people's posts and signatures... Dr. MacDonald is AMAZING - not just a great academic, but just a truly genuinely nice and caring person. Great choice! Moore is away at Oxford for 6 months so most likely why she didn't respond. Haven't had Lister but I've heard great things about him. All solid choices! I'm not entirely sure how many PhDs they will take this year - they had about 120 applicants for all the streams (PhD & MA). All depends on funding and whatnot. Sigh - fingers crossed, eh?!
