microarray Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I've been wearing canvas shoes for the better part of my life. No matter what shoes I try to venture off to, I end up going back to canvas shoes for every day wear. I'm trying to find a replacement for Vans and Converse - I love both, but they just don't last with daily wear. With Vans I always end up with holes near my toes, and the soles on Converse always end up with holes. I wore Keds a lot when I was a kid, but I remember them being really uncomfortable to break in. I'm considering trying out PF Flyers as they seem to be much more durable and comfortable when compared to Converse. I really like these: http://bit.ly/PdKlMP What are your favorite canvas shoes? Any recommendations?
likemythesis Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) Sanuk has some comfy options. I can't remember if my pair are canvas but I know they sell some that are. Also, yeah, I actually miss my TOMS some days because they were such an easy throw-on option. Edited March 9, 2014 by likemythesis
Varangian Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I've worn the same pair of Chuck Taylors for 8 years. They're perfectly worn in. Can't wear in winter though. Canvas shoes aren't made for cold weather. Next pair I get is going to be custom. Converse really set the standard with canvas so anything else is pretty much the same in terms of thickness unless you find a pair that have extra lining or something.
seeingeyeduck Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 I love toms Can you wear toms without socks without getting stinky feet? I have some cheap ass canvas flats and I think the insole must be synthetic cuz they don't breathe well...
objectivityofcontradiction Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Once a Vans only person, I now I wear almost exclusively Tretorn canvas shoes. Check em out.
microarray Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Once a Vans only person, I now I wear almost exclusively Tretorn canvas shoes. Check em out. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to look into them! How do they hold up over time? Do you think they last longer than vans, and do they have more arch support than vans?
Monochrome Spring Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Can you wear toms without socks without getting stinky feet? I have some cheap ass canvas flats and I think the insole must be synthetic cuz they don't breathe well... I wear TOMS without socks. I normally have very stinky feet, but I use a spray (tea tree oil I think) from a bath and body store that neutralizes the odors. As long as I'm adamant about spraying when I get home, it's not bad. And I throw them in the wash every once in a while.
GreenePony Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) I use Keds and Aris Allens for dancing so I am pretty rough on my shoes. I had one pair of Keds that lasted through three years of dancing on brick and awful modular staging. I did toss my second pair in the washer and dryer for a cycle to accelerate the breaking in period. My AAs broke in faster but I think they only have a sued sole option for their canvas shoes (I only wore these on proper floors so they don't show wear as fast.) I've worn sueded soles as street soles but it seems like extra hassle if you can avoid it (these were AA repros I wanted for work and they didn't offer in a street sole yet.) Yup, you need no-show socks! :-) the best ones I've found have been at Giant (a supermarket) oddly enough! "no nonsense" brand, with a little gel patch at the back of the sock to keep it from slipping. Other no-show socks have this, but they still manage to slip. This particular brand of socks are reliable though!! I do love toms, too. Got my second pair about a month ago. Sweet brown herringbone design with gold thread throughout... That way there's a shimmer of gold without it looking glittery to the point where it looks like kesha threw up on your shoes. My dog destroyed those toms today... :-(
jmu Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 My next pair of shoes will likely be some canvas Adidas Sambas.
zealot Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Brand: Palladium Style: Pampa Hi Color: Boue I wear these every where... field work, teaching, even to my PhD interview. They are worth the investment in the time I have worn these I would have gone through at least two pairs of converse chuck taylors and a pair of toms.
pyrocide Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 This thread has made me bring out my ratty grey converse flats from the closet. I forgot how comfy they are.

What's the brand of socks? I sometimes wear those socks with sneakers but they almost always do show. White is really obvious and nude looks like grandma when it's visible...
