ning124 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I was too excited to read the bottom for the option of a Skype interview. Could I go that route and still be taken seriously by Tyler ? I went to the portfolio day and asked the guy from Tyler about funding. He talked a LOT about it, there're all different kinds of opportunities. but rule of thumb: max of one year of full ride.
bannedinbc Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Interview requests from UCSD and UCI today. feelin jittery.
thepictureisstill Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Good luck to everyone going into interviews! Prep prep prep. Also, please submit results and interview requests through the links at the top of the page. Kick ass. Take names. Do something super nice for yourself after.
thepictureisstill Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Yale: "There are no scholarships based on merit or any criteria other than financial need. The School determines financial need in accordance with formulas established by institutional and federal methodologies" another qualm I have with the system is that places like Yale take your parents income into consideration. Why would they assume that my parents are able and willing to pay for school? Going way way back to Saltz's article from like 10 years ago...these programs should not be solely for those who can pay. We can help change this by not accruing debt and stressing to schools that, if they want us, put your merit based scholarships where your mouths are. I went to the Yale open house and had the impression that they use their available funding to level the playing field, as much as possible. They essentially give whatever they can to the incoming students, based on need. I'm assuming this is of course outside of the initial merit scholarships, etc. I also spoke with a Yale alum who received the full ride scholarship (this is many years ago) for her department, and she was unable to make the in-person interview. So I'm guessing it's not held against you in any significant way if you have to opt for skype.

I think that in some ways this method still makes more sense than merit based aid. It avoids the situation where you have Student A, who is a great applicant and receives the merit funding, but would also have the funds to afford the costs regardless. Whereas student B is good enough to get accepted but does not receive the merit based funding because they are not ranked as highly as Student A, but Student B cannot afford to attend without funding. Especially since class and income levels are such big factors when it comes to opportunity and achievement, I think that this method goes a lot further towards "levelling the playing field" (this is probably also a good starting point for an argument supporting the consideration of parents' income). kxxx 1
thepictureisstill Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Agreed. And they are upfront about this stuff, I think it's within the first two paragraphs of the financial information. It definitely does level the playing field. I wonder if they take cost of living In New Haven in to consideration as well? Or just tuition?
technotronic Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I think many institutions use the merit funding as a way of securing / wooing the students that they're really excited about working with. I'm assuming Yale doesn't have to do this, since they're Yale.. thepictureisstill 1
Czarina Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) No interview requests yet, and kind of really terrified right now. Is there a possibility that different departments within a program send out interview requests at different times? Edited January 29, 2015 by Czarina
Leahdog Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Yea, Czarina, I've heard that different departments within a program send out requests at different times. I haven't gotten any requests for interviews yet either.... So scary... I think that February will be the big month for interview requests so I wouldn't ring the alarm yet (easier said than done I know). Waiting is the hardest part- tom petty Lol
Czarina Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Yeah, totally. I keep telling myself that it will all work out when the program is truly a good fit.

Is there a possibility that different departments within a program send out interview requests at different times? Czarina, I think most programs work that way unless they're super interdisciplinary. What was your experience last year?
aparticularkindofheaven Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) Czarina, the applications are sorted by the department and each professor in those departments review them when they can. So yes, time will vary from department to department. Where did you apply? Edited January 29, 2015 by siia
VLynn Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Repeating this: Good luck to everyone going into interviews! Prep prep prep. Also, please submit results and interview requests through the links at the top of the page. Kick ass. Take names. Do something super nice for yourself after. Rather than having to click through 10+ pages of forum threads to find information on admissions, it is so much more time efficient to be able to access recent admissions results (acceptances, rejections, interview request dates, etc.) in the "Results Search" and "Submit Results" tabs at the top of the page. It is located right under the theGradCafe.com logo. Looking through past MFA results submissions, the results search is highly underutilized by visual arts applicants of past years compared to every other grad school concentration. For the sake of future applicants utilizing the site for admissions insight, I think it would be a such a great contribution if we were all sure to submit this year's admissions results to the database. buyyourbison, tcornel5 and thepictureisstill 3

kogepan137 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Interview requests from UCSD and UCI today. feelin jittery. Did anyone else hear from UCI already? I feel like it's early, maybe not?
tcolcord Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I was too excited to read the bottom for the option of a Skype interview. Could I go that route and still be taken seriously by Tyler ? I think so, Im going for the in person one at Tyler but have to do Skype interviews at other schools because they wanted me to come on the same weekend Tyler wanted me. They are totally cool with it I think as long as you explain your situation.
technotronic Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Hey jI10 - I see you're in Philadelphia. Have you visited Tyler? Seen their studios? I'd love to gain some perspective from anyone who's had a chance to visit / get to know the program better.
jl10 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) Hey jI10 - I see you're in Philadelphia. Have you visited Tyler? Seen their studios? I'd love to gain some perspective from anyone who's had a chance to visit / get to know the program better. I actually haven't been to see the studios, but the majority of the faculty at my school (and most schools in philly) have their mfa from tyler...not sure if this is a good or bad thing. I personally applied based on the reputation, faculty, and location. Edited January 30, 2015 by jl10
yayaaaaa Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 saw yale posted a decision for someone online. Anyone else get their decision from yale? I didn't apply but I like keeping tabs on those who do ! seems exciting buyyourbison 1
obviouslytma Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Did anyone here apply to Stanford's MFA in Art Practice? Just looked at my application and it still says incomplete (but I submitted everything before the deadline!). Curious if anyone else is seeing that.
herdsman Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Got an email from Yale early this morning directing me to check my application status on their site. Rejected. Relieved.
thepictureisstill Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Invited to interview with SAIC for fibers (via email). They also said letters will be going out in the post.
