can anyone speak for the differences between the two year and three year program? seems like the better ranked schools are two year. Just curious of the pros and cons

You can do Hunter in two years-it's just that most students end up doing 3 and working part of the time. It's a personal decision I think

Accepted to Hunter as well.  Jesus.

Okay that's what I thought. So it's about $10,000 per year?

Hunter Accepted!!!!

Accepted into Hunter!!! =D

congratulations to you guys...

Thank you Carter and tdevo412!! I am looking at the Hunter college tuition and fees calculator and it says non-resident fees is 22k for a year on there?

Anybody have thoughts on CCA? I haven't visited yet, but I'm weighing a pretty strong funding offer from them with lower funding offers (but wayyyy less expensive cities - so living expenses in the Bay are a big concern). I dig the program from what I see so far and am interested in their dual-degree with Visual + Critical Studies.

My options at this point are CCA Fine Arts, UPenn (low funding offer), RISD Photo (low funding), CalArts Photo (funding TBD), and MICA Photo (funding TBD).

Anyone have perspectives on these programs? UPenn was (is?) my top choice but their funding offer is way too low to make it feasible...

I live in SF, CCA is a great school, but class sizes (like one incoming class) are huge - 80+ and it feels a bit like a factory. If offered the same funding at CalArts, I'd go there. Much stronger fine art reputation. CCA is better for makers/fineart-design crossovers.

Regarding Hunter Spring admit, If you are going in at Spring term, maybe that could give you a chance to establish New York residency for in-state tution? I'd look into it! Congrats to everyone!

Unsure how, after my disaster of an interview, but I was also accepted to Hunter today.

Four out of four schools! Also in at ICP-Bard, SVA, and Parsons with scholarship offers. Feeling super excited, though I'm scared to make a decision.

Hey folks! I am super surprised, just got a letter that I'm an alternate at Mica (hoffberger). Is that just a sugar coated word for waitlist? They seemed positive about my chances of getting in but I was wondering what exactly being an alternate means. I didn't interview so was just waiting for my rejection letter--a pleasant surprise!

I think alternate isn't as good as waitlist but it's apparently how MICA operates. ...I thought waitlist they had an already decided order, but with alternate there is still a process to go through. Meaning just because you are said to be an alternate that isn't a gurantee  you will get in...whereas with waitlist they have you in a certain order.

Am I correct everyone?

From what I understand, the Post Bac is structured very much like the MFA, with the exception being that it's only a year long (obviously) and you only get to chose one advisor instead of two.  The Post Bac studios are mixed in with the MFA studios, so there's lots of intermingling between programs, which I thought was cool.  You take one elective undergrad level class in whatever discipline you choose, the rest is pretty much self directed studio time, theory and art history.  I've been out of school for five years, so although I'm disappointed I didn't make it into the MFA program, there's no denying that I could benefit tremendously from being re-immersed in that world before going onto the MFA.

Funding is not great. There are some merit scholarships, but they don't cover a whole lot and I got the feeling that they were few and far between.

And obviously there's no guarantee that you'll be accepted into SAIC's MFA program after completing the Post Bac, but they did say that some years there has been an 80-90% acceptance rate. Also, a lot of people go on from the Post Bac to get incredible funding at other schools.

It was mentioned that I was an ideal candidate for the Post Bac because I "didn't go to art school", which honestly kind of shocked me, even though I guess they're right.  I went to a tiny liberal arts school, but the art program was super intense, and I received a fantastic education there... I guess on paper it doesn't look as good as going to MICA or Tyler, but I wouldn't change a thing.

Soooo... Yeah.  I'll see what kind of funding they come up with.  I'd love to go, but I don't think I can afford it.

Maybe they meant not art directed? I don't know my school isn't known for its art department either but it's leagues above what is usually around here which is why all these people from community colleges end up at my school. Here in Texas I am pretty sure the "University of Texas' system is the best option. i go to UT Tyler..so maybe it's not as small of a program?

We've had a portion of students go to big name schools but I don't think many people know about our program , especially in comparsion to UT Austin. We have a pretty good art program (if you work hard) .It is easy for some students to skate by , but I think that comes from not having as many options for enrollment (since it is smaller). If you take in a higher degree of applicants you can really weed people out. Maybe it's just the nature of that small BFA program that has them wary. I am not sure- because certainly from some bfa graduates having a bfa is not impressive...(I don't want to sound like a jerk but it is what it is)

Waitlisted to Hoffberger... again.  Got a nice handwritten note from Chris, though.  He's a good dude.  Anyone thinking of declining? :-/

Talking to the director of SAIC's Post Bac tomorrow about funding.  If they offer me something decent and MICA falls through, I might go.  I loved that place.

Still waiting on official rejections from RISD, VCU, and SVA.  It's been a long, torturous few months.   :(

I know this is an older post  but yeah I think that Joan lady is the one that is primarily in charge of the painting department so if she doesn't like your work or think it is ready over other applicants  , it's pretty much no dice . I know it seems weird to me,but the impression that i got is that she is the big cahuna and the end all be all in that program. I don't think I like that in retrospect. Even if she seems very knowlegeable it makes me wary if there isn't more than one person in a department with the power to make decisions.

Maybe I am wrong though?

Interesting, thanks!! They do say that basically they will be re reviewing my application in april once they get the initial deposits, so it is not ordered. I have been a little concerned about getting my hopes up just because the letter was so nice and it seemed like alternate was better than waitlist. Maybe I was reading into it though.

Is there also a wait list? I emailed them asking but am too impatient haha.

Congrats to everyone on their acceptances and my sympathies for any rejections/deferrals/waitlists. Nothing more frustrating than getting positive reinforcement but still no definitive answer.

so far..

UCLA-rejected

UC Berkeley- rejected

VCU- 1st on waitlist, visiting in April

UT Austin- waitlisted

Hunter- Accepted

SFAI- Accepted with a little funding

Tyler- Accepted 50% plus a free semester abroad in Rome

Columbia- interviewed, still waiting..

Looks like I am probably going to Tyler! They've offered me a great deal and a chance at a really amazing experience overseas. Columbia was my first choice (visited twice, they probably have the bombest program) but I can't justify paying for it when i've been offered a better deal at Tyler. Unless I get an even better deal at VCU it looks like I am Tyler bound :) There all great programs though, I wish I could do all of them...Congrats and good luck to everyone else!!

btw, if you weren't accepted anywhere this year, another year can be really useful! I didn't get in anywhere last year and I think the extra time gave me a big boost

no I am just saying from other people on here, most programs have waitlists and don't call it alternate like MICA so I think it's different...

Also, most people seem to be assigned a number on the waitlist at other schools, hence they say "#2 on waitlist" I am not sure if every waitlist has numbers assigned though, maybe they don't all. It seems like alternate could be a good thing in that they will reconsider you again, but waitlist feels like a much more sure thing (especially if you're like #1).

Got it. I see you're an alternate too, so best of luck to you!! The struggle is real!

I honestly am not that interested in MICA anymore..Not that it wouldn't be great to go there, but yeah you know..

I will probably just tell them I dont really plan on trying for the alternate position. I don't need to bother their time just to you know massage my ego by going 'hey I can get in ! ' even if I want to go elsewhere.

I wish all the alternates the best of luck in hopefully recieving that dream acceptance !!! *fingers crossed*

My take: "alternate" is the term when you're first runner up for a super-small incoming class

"waitlist" is a larger group that may/may not have a numbered ranking
