mariePhy Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Hi everyone, Just joined the forum. Got accepted to Western Ontario, rejected through postal mail from Pittsburgh (HPS), one presumed rejection from UCSD. Congrats to everyone who's been accepted so far ! kant_get_in 1
BerryHill Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 confirming the FSU MA acceptance (woo!) Not sure when they'll release their phd decisions, but best of luck guys!
TheNaturalist Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Rejected from Duke (email to check website) At least I've still got Northwestern under my belt.
TheNaturalist Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 UNC rejection as well. The South hates me. Infinite Zest 1
a_for_aporia Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Notre Dame Philosophy, PhD (F15) Accepted via Phone on 19 Feb 2015 ♦ A 18 Feb 2015 report spam (Time is in Europe -- it was 1 AM. Really shouldn't have picked up.) This person sounds annoyed to have received an offer from Notre Dame's PhD program. Establishment, Page228 and isostheneia 3

Infinite Zest Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 To be fair, in my UNC SOP, I said that I admired the work of a professor because he gives really good examples... Probably not a good fit. isostheneia 1

a_for_aporia Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Nope, just sorry for making the professor make an international call on his dime! (Also, it's "she"...) Congrats! By the way, is your "Also, it's 'she'..." a reference to the professor who called to convey the offer to you, or to my post? If the latter, my post uses "person", which is -- as far as I know -- gender neutral!

Lunatic Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 A bit late putting this up. Acceptances: OSU, IU, Missouri. Waitlist: Virginia, Rochester Rejections: Brown, WUSTL (PNP), Northwestern, UNC-Chapel Hill I received an email from Duke telling me to log in to see the decision letter, but I have trouble logging in. Presuming rejection. NathanKellen and Ritwik 2

Edit_Undo Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=carnegie+computer&t=a&o=&pp=250 Reading the comments of the people who got admitted to CMU by mistake... So sad and depressing. Edited February 19, 2015 by Edit_Undo
Establishment Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I can't imagine anything worse, in the context of grad admissions, than that. Don't you imagine some students rejected other offers or removed themselves from waitlists? It's not as if CMU has much choice of course: either allow all 800 people to enroll or correct their status. But I can't even imagine how I would feel, just knowing how intense and emotional this process is, to get accepted to my dream school and then to have them email me, hours later rather than the next moment as should have been done, that I had in fact not been accepted. I would cry. I would throw up. And if I had informed my job or told my loved ones or posted on social media. Wow. Is there an "Accept Everyone" button somewhere that someone accidentally sat on? I just don't know how that can happen. A third party is probably to blame, but still. Then again, wouldn't people like us immediately know there was a mistake? If everyone suddenly started posting that they were in at NYU, say. Maybe it's not analogous, idk, but it seems similar. We would immediately think to be suspicious, I guess. Anyway, crazy article, thanks for sharing Ian. Cecinestpasunphilosophe 1
philstudent1991 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 It certainly gives good reason for one to never be to hasty in life with big decisions. Sit on your offers, and don't make any rash decisions in rejecting acceptances, removing yourself from waitlists, and declining jobs. yep, very true.
Duns Eith Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) “Email is inherently insecure,” said Mr. Nassirian, now the director of federal relations and policy analysis at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Email, he said, makes it too easy to make a mistake multiplied by hundreds or thousands, and too hard to retract it. Edited February 19, 2015 by Turretin Nastasya_Filippovna 1
sidevans Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Hi folks, Ian and I have now added a funding page on the blog, where you can fill out a response form with the funding details at each of the places you've been accepted. There'll be a table of responses on that page by the end of the day. Unfortunately, the table won't be updated immediately, but I'll be updating it daily. Hopefully people find it a useful tool, and it'd be appreciated if you could take a minute to fill out the response form so we can get responses for most schools. ianfaircloud and Hcarp 2

Edit_Undo Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Congratulations! It must feel incredible, especially after your bad luck last year. Thank you, it is such a relief! Huge congrats. If you do end up going to Calgary, I recommend you dress warm -- I'm Canadian, so I speak from experience Thanks! I have never really experienced real cold weather. I'm from the middle east and done my BA in California. I hope that I don't freeze to death if I went there. NathanKellen 1
