Social Psychology

You too, JSocial? Wow, that's a lot of morality folks applying this year!

Yes, moral decision-making is a hot topic that is gaining attention in social psychology. Just look at the SPSP presentation schedule if you want further confirmation. Also, notice how it is many of the younger scientists that are leading this area (e.g., Greene, Haidt, Cushman, Pizarro, Valdesolo). My research mentor mentioned that it is probably a good time to get involved in this type of research, so I'm looking forward to becoming a part of this intellectual movement!

As I said to MoralResearcher earlier, I think it would be a good idea to try and keep in touch with those interested in this subfield of study once we are admitted to our respected schools/programs. Hell, we'll probably see each other at conferences and maybe even collaborate (or start a fierce debate) some day.

Yah, I was talking to a professor last week, who mentioned that there is a lot of research starting now looking at various aspects of morality.

It'd be so cool if we all got in and could work together or something.

Attention SUNY BUFFALO applicants:

Does your online status page thingy still say "Not reviewed" followed by a date from around the deadline? It says all my materials are there (with the secretary-added notes too, so I know someone at their office actually handled it) and that my application is complete. I've been letting it go in the past few weeks because I knew it was still early-ish and some places don't update it because they don't use that feature, but now I'm starting to get nervous that I was never even looked at. I also believe some people already got interviews there, so I was assuming I'm either waitlisted or rejected, but I'd like to know if this is unusual. Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks!

You can try to give them a call and see what's up.

My Virginia application still says they have not received my GRE scores, even though I sent those in October. I even called them to make sure they got it, and they said they'd update my file. They didn't. I'll wait a couple of days and call back.

I'm going to have to. But I just don't see why I wouldn't get reviewed since everything apparently made it to the office, with arrival dates and everything...? Maybe they missed me when turning things over to the adcom?

I would think that somebody just hasn't updated your online file rather than them just passing over your application all together.

I think that's probably the case, too. Though it wouldn't hurt to call and check.

Thank you for the reassurance. I needed to hear people other than myself saying that! I always assume the worst. haha

Yeah I don't know what I would do if some school just skipped over my application.... I honestly kind of feel that way about the UMASS situation..

Back from SPSP. Finally, a stable internet connection!

The UMass situation is very interesting because at least one person is not telling the truth, knowingly or not. All I have to tell you is Dr. P. walked up to me after the Close Relationships preconference at SPSP and volunteered said info without me asking (or daring to ask). She also gave me a hug :| My friend also met the postdoc who's working with her next year in the poster session. Apparently the way the economy has worked is is such that it's cheaper to keep a postdoc than a new grad student. WTF.

@ jordy: I think you're good, unless you applied to Sandra Murray, because she's not taking students. I had an interview at Buffalo and my status on the app is still "Not Reviewed - 12/04".

Are the Cornell interview and Yale admit hanging around anywhere?

Who did you apply to work with?

x2 for Cornell (though it's my reach)

Heh, yup, she was my POI. :( Oh well, I was suspecting it anyway. Thanks for the website info too.

Yes, do tell, how was the conference?

While I hate to say it I would think that a postdoc is probably a much better instant investment. That way she will have a person that is probably going to be more dedicated to the project at hand rather than dividing their time between classes and personal research interests... She was my POI too so I really hate saying it, but it makes more sense.

Anyone else looking at Ohio State for social?

I'm pretty sure they sent out acceptances and invitations to recruitment weekend already, but there may be a chance they haven't all gone out yet. I don't know how they manage the wait list though. Who are your POIs?

I'm interested in working with Wil Cunningham mostly, although also some with Mike Vasey (even though he's clinical). I'm going out for the recruiting weekend, but I'm trying to learn all I can about the program before I go. I was hoping someone else on here might know more.

Congrats! And check your PMs ;)

I have applied to several social psychology programs, though I am not in the same boat as everyone else it seems haha. My interests are in the intersection of law and psychology, particularly in juror decision making and extra-legal factors within the court system, with some interrogation thrown in there smile.gif . I have applied to UTEP (accepted), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Interview coming up!), John Jay (interview the day before UNL), Wyoming (interview the day after UNL), UC-Irvine, WUSTL, UVA, and UIC (I have slowly started to lose hope in those last four from looking at the results page though). Also, even though most of you talked about attending/wanting to attend the SPSP conference, is anyone going to the AP-LS conference in Vancouver??

Yale admit, are you out there? And, would you be willing to share who your POI is?

Also, I noticed that people have received rejections from UC Boulder (Sorry :(). However, I have not heard a peep from them. I even sent an email a few weeks ago asking when their interview weekend is - just for scheduling purposes - and no reply. Anybody else waiting on Boulder?

Another note, did anyone else receive the not-so cryptic email from UC Berkeley letting applicants know that they were not rejected (yet), but they were also not invited to interview weekend?

Best of luck to everyone!

Wondering if anyone has heard anything from Colorado State, UC Davis, or U Chicago? I have not seen any results posted thus far for interviews or decisions made, but thought maybe someone reading may have insight to these programs....? Thanks!

Such a big help...

So I mentioned to my adviser that Michigan was only taking 1 or 2 students this year and he mentioned that the acceptances were probably already decided before they even received the applications... He explained to me that at much larger programs it is not completely uncommon for those acceptances to be more about who you know than anything else. Now I didn't apply to Michigan, but I just wanted to throw this out there and see what yall think. What would you do if you applied to Michigan (or any other program at the top of your list for that matter) and found out that they knew who they were accepting last summer? Do you believe that this happens? I personally do, but I have been told that I am too cynical.

I have heard of this happening from others who have applied in the past. It seems like this is a common trend when spots are limited, rather than in programs who have many spots to fill. It has been explained to me as similar to getting a good job at a well-known company and knowing a connection can be important. I am REALLY hoping that this is not the case with many schools, though, or else I am hopeless!!
