Hello again !

My quant in GRE is 158 but clemson university is asking 160 for industrial engineering, should I still apply ?

I think you should apply to the sociology program at Stanford. Its like industrial engineering at Clemson or UT for people who know how to read and follow instructions. Also, you should retake the GRE. Good luck with that.

No standford sociology has high GRE requirements

The MSc in sarcasm and rhetoric at Stony Brook, I hear, is top notch & a great foot on the door to engineer industry.

@dragonborn: hazenyc is just trolling you. But in all seriousness, it doesn't seem like you have any clear direction or motivation for what you want to do, at least from the way you jumped from sociology to industrial engineering. Maybe you should rethink your applications this year.

@MaxWeberHasAPosse: if you have something stuck in your ass, I suggest you excuse yourself to the bathroom.

I am completely motivated for Industrial Engineering, I know that guy was trolling me, as my work ex with Hyundai and my undergrad in mechanical are nowhere related to Sociology. Was just curious

Please advice me on my previous posts , thank you a lot once again

Why am I being a troll? Answer why sociology and what you'd like to do research toward. If you can't you're in the wrong forum, the wrong thread certainly, and wasting all of our time. As for the previous poster, conversation is in lieu of any actual results having been released yet.

Isn't this thread for acceptances, rejections, and interviews? 99% of what's posted in this thread is conversation.

Sorry, Max... It kinda got off topic. I figured since one interview rolled in, more would start last week, but this turned more into a waiting thread for sociology applicants. So, I can always make another thread when the time comes. Technically, I guess this thread can be deleted by a mod for being off topic. If so, that's ok, we can always make another one. Sorry :-(

Dragonborn, you are in the sociology forum. Sorry, but you're in the wrong forum. Check out the forum directory for the engineering forum. Thanks!

Interview from Notre Dame sighted. Anyone wanna claim that? That makes UVA, Rice, and Notre Dame so far, in terms of any kind of movement for sociology. Probably will be more next week.

Shiiittt notre dame doing interviews??? Is that even confirmed? Seems early considering their due date was like a week ago.

ND due date was Jan 4th. Highly doubt profs are back in the office and have organized themselves such to have a short list already narrowed down.

Hmmm that is very recent! Well, hopefully someone who has received notice of an interview will let us know more info about it! If the deadline was January 4th in past years, then it is possible, as interviews have been sent out around this time in years past for Notre Dame.

I've applied to ND and my application status says: "To date there is no decision on your application.  As soon as a decision is available we will update this page."

Rejection numero uno perhaps!!!!

I don't think you guys should worry too much about interviews especially this early in the cycle; its mainly done to verify the level of english speaking proficiency in foreign applicants, especially from China. IELTS/TOEFL cheating is rampant in developing countries, and there are numerous services that will prepare (not proofread, but actually prepare from scratch) a SOP + LORs for students in these countries. It was not common for a foreign student to look perfect on paper only to show up the first day of classes with limited english proficiency and no discernible understanding of academic research

This is incorrect information--interviews are done for all applicants regardless of their native language. Programs like Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Rice do in-person interviews for all applicants who are in the US and skype interviews for those who are overseas. These skype interviews are typically conducted during the same time as the physical interview weekend.

I can also confirm that the admissions committee at Emory sociology will be meeting very soon. They will also have their interview weekend on February 4-6.

Yeah, I didn't think the post  about international applicants only interviewing sounded accurate either, since many native English speaking applicants interview, too...

Wow, the Emory admissions committee is meeting soon! How exciting! I sure hope I earn an interview spot. Best wishes to all other Emory applicants as well!

Sigh, it never ceases to amaze me how trigger happy you all are and eager to one up another poster. First, noticed I prefaced the post with the qualifier "this early".

Second, what is it, like a handful of LRM programs who do these mandatory interviews for everyone? Interviews still won't happen for the vast majority of North American applicants, unless you are disproportionately applying to these LRM places...which i guess everyone on this board is doing. Anyone wants to take a guess as to why applicants to top programs don't post here?

They were when I was applying last year - quite a few people were accepted to Harvard, UCLA, NYU, etc. I'm assuming it's people like you that's keeping others at bay.

Hi everyone! I am new to gradcafe and I am wondering if there is any post on what to expect for a skype interview for sociology PhD programs? What kind of conversation is this? Typical questions?

I am an international student.

I would really appreciate any information on this.

Thanks!

sorry, we didn't realize what you meant because you didn't specify that you didn't mean the programs who do interviews for everyone.

And I'm sorry to say this, but your posts in this and other threads come across as mean-spirited. I don't think you mean to be mean though. Tone is hard to read over the Internet.

I just know that Linda nor myself meant to spark a reply like the one you posted. We took the info we had from you post and tried to formulate an accurate reply. There were parts of your post we understood and misunderstood. It happens, unfortunately.

Also, as other posters have said, users in the past have applied to top programs. Every year is different. Plus, not as many people, overall, are posting in this forum this year.

Side note: I might open a waiting/general conversation thread, too...
