Like me and my co-presenter, there were a lot of peoplr with 70 to 80 percent finished projects, and so it felt very workshoppy. Lots of pointed, but friendly and constructive questions and suggestions. Also, the keynote lineup was amazing! Stathis Psillos, Anjan Chakravartty, Jutta Schickore, Betty Smokovitis, Helge Kragh, and Eric Scerri all gave talks. Great conference! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

MVSCZAR Posted February 22, 2016 Share Posted February 22, 2016 A reminder to really make sure your Skype is working if you have an interview. Mine wasn't and it was 10 minutes of disaster. Almost had to call FEMA. I can only imagine that they had my face in a weird position frozen on their screen for the whole time. Basically, they already have a couple people doing the sort of thing I'm doing, and that ended up counting against me once they whittled it down to the last group of applications. That was my initial interpretation, but did not want to make the mistake of assuming. Thank you for the clarification! I firmly believe that even within esoteric fields, individuals can provide a multiplicity of insights that lead to a great deal of differentiation and heterogeneity. I wish this was appreciated more profoundly (and prioritized accordingly) in the academic world, rather than compartmentalizing ideas and disciplines to satisfy certain metrics. However, may this allow you a greater opportunity to distinguish yourself in a program that finds what you have to offer less circumstantially hackneyed! Applied to many high-ranked schools because of the "you never know" factor (and because my advisers thought I should), but now I don't look forward to the continued stress about a bunch of mostly hopeless applications. On another note, @metaphysician I completely agree with your complaint about schools not sending out rejections, or sending them out weeks after decisions have been made. It takes five minutes to write a courteous and timely note to rejected applicants. Perhaps the GradCafe community should start polling about this and mentioning/ranking/awarding schools/departments that treat their applicants with the greatest/least degree of respect. In monitoring my apps outstanding, I discovered that today my app was marked "Incomplete." Now I have taken great pains to pay close attention and follow all instructions, so I was very concerned. It was one of those schools that the phil. department instructed me to send transcripts to a certain place, and the official app to another; long story short, I apparently have chosen poorly. Anyway, I noticed that it may take 2-3 weeks for my documents to be recognized. I should have double-checked; it was likely a "both-and" rather than "either-or" and I just didn't clarify. Doh! I'm having trouble getting hold of them currently, but I did upload the transcripts that I had as quickly as possible. I couldn't tell if this "incomplete" really will set me back a few weeks, and if it's an indicator that they just now got to it, or if they were going to extend an offer, or what. Proportion of PhD programs listed on the official prediction page that have sent their acceptances out: ~75% Proportion of PhD programs to which I applied that have sent their acceptances out: ~30% (and UCLA is probably not done) My frustration correlated with the difference between these two numbers.
