Emails that don't turn out to be from grad school

So, I have been refreshing my Gmail page for quite some time now, waiting for any news from the schools that I applied to. Every time I came and refreshed the page on my laptop, I had new emails, which I have been praying for to be from the grad schools.

Alas! The cruel card has been played and the only email I get is "You have won XXXXX". Oh, how badly I wish I could rip off the morons sending me junk emails at such anxious moments.

Anyone having similar thoughts?

Thanks to another poster's recommendation, I changed the settings in my Gmail to sort out priority emails so I only get alerts for anything considered important. No more flipping out over a new message only to find out about Macy's new crazy sale (seriously, Macy's has sales every weekend now).

Not so much on emails, but I tell you, I have gotten so many phone calls that begin, "Congratulations! You have won a cruise to Miami..."

Lol. I am glad that I still use an outdated Samsung smartphone. It doesn't even have Android and no 3G support, which means I am safe from the notorious email notifications to some extent. But then again, one has to come to the computer and face the inevitable.

Thankfully, just before applying I decided to remove and unsubscribe all sites that were linked to my Gmail account. That little exclamation button came in handy and now most junk mails end up in spam. Nonetheless, I am checking out the spam folder in the hope that the grad school mails won't end up in spam.

Received last night - in three consecutive emails.

Dear XXXXX,

The application system for Columbia Engineering graduate programs...

:o

...will be unavailable for a brief period on: Thursday, February 25th, between 8:30a.m. and 12p.m. (EST or NYC time).

Please do not use the system during the closure period to avoid any problems with your application data. You may resume to use the system after 12 noon.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Haha, I've been doing the same thing. You can never be too careful with this process.

Exactly!

I am getting emails for Webinars from universities that I didn't apply to. My gmail account is in turmoil.

@RCtheSS I think at moments like these, even the emails stating "I am 23/f and I found your profile in Facebook.", although extremely annoying, ought to put a smile on my face. Haha. I am looking for every alternative to keep my cool, I guess. :D

Hahaha, I get you. As stressful as grad school admissions can be, we have to take a step back, breathe, and try to keep a positive outlook on life! It's not the end of the world (yet).

I put my school email address on all of my applications, so fortunately I'm insulated from all of the gmail spam. The regular school spam, though, not so much. I've marked a lot as junk and unsubscribed from emails from a few professional societies, but junk still makes it through occasionally.

My personal favorite :
I get the email newsletter from the MIT Technology Review.

Every. Single. Morning. I wake up and immediately see 'MIT', freak out... and then realize that it's just today's news.

May need to unsubscribe to that one to preserve sanity for the next while.

Teressa pinned 1 of your pins.

Spunky_Lady pinned 1 of your pins.

Sandra Barnes pinned 1 of your pins.

Kayla Jordan pinned 1 of your pins.

God dammit pinterest, I understand that people like my pins... but I'm not interested right now.

Mine is LinkedIn. Person XYZ has made some new connections. Person ABC would like to make a new connection with you. And some more from Change.org. FML.

When I was in the period of about 2 weeks where I didn't hear from any schools, one of my professors sent me an email with the subject line "Admissions decision for Cornell University", just to troll me.

Omg. The torture! My letter recommender called me to tell me that he has not received the recommendation link, two days before deadline. Having my anxiety shoot through the roof!

I have a worse one: I just got an email FROM Oxford Graduate Admissions, only to learn that they just wanted me to fill out an applicant survey.

(Other than learning that my application was passed over to the department, I've heard nothing since 22 Jan).

I received an application system survey that I plainly ignored. Thank goodness, the survey was sent to me one day after I applied. Cant bear these things at this time of the year.

I am getting blown up by emails from some UK universities that I applied to. They are doing their best at changing my mind to opt for MSc in their programs. And I kind of feel sorry for them, but as the job opportunities go for Non-EU students, UK education is awesome if you are paying from your own pockets, instead of a loan. And I practically got into every UK based university for Masters in Computer Science. Even got a 8000 pound scholarship on one.

But call me a fool, I just wanna go for US. Hope this intense waiting period has some sunshine at the end.

While at an interview weekend with a school another girl and myself both received emails from that school with titles saying some ting to the effect " XXXXXXX University Admissions" that turned out to be tips for admission so it got us so excited then confused.

I know the feeling. Sometimes I feel like I have bipolar disorder from these stuff. One moment a surge of happiness at seeing the word "Admissions", and the next moment, utter doom.

Apparently "Manhattan Prep" wants me to appear the GRE over and over and hence, they are asking me to check out the new ways to improve my Verbal score.
