It's possible that they are waiting for the April 15 deadline. Once the rejection starts, the funds that become available are usually allotted to the PhD students without funding. Also, it might happen that the Masters admissions are going on right now and as soon as they start considering funding for Masters, they allot the yet to be funded PhD students with scholarships and assistantships, while any further remaining scholarships are assigned to the Masters students. That's what happened with me, when I got admit without funding initially. It took a while, but I finally received a full tuition waiver.

Thank you. I plan on doing that. The adviser said that it's best to decide on whether I want to for MS or PhD, after arriving at the university and taking the classes. I have been constantly nagging the graduate coordinator with the TA and RA questions. Plus my adviser has been nagging the coordinator as well. No wonder I landed the full tuition waiver. Of course I apologized about that later . But yeah, she told me that I am still eligible to get an assistantship along with the current scholarship and that the funding will come through the adviser. So as long as my adviser doesn't have funds, I will have to pay for the living expenses. And for TA from another department. I don't know how likely I am going to get any. Plus, I cannot work part time, except for taking up an internship, since I would be under the F-1 visa.

Thank you for the information. Since my classes are to begin on September, I still have plenty of time to decide if I want to go to the Masters. And yes, without funding, I would be graduating with a Masters. That being said, the current scholarship requires me to enroll for 12 credits per term. And each term usually takes in 9 credits per term. As the required number of credits is 45, my coursework would end up sooner than a routine masters with 9 credits per term. Since, the graduation deadline simply depends on the time taken on thesis, I am planning on informing the professor of graduating sooner and accordingly plan the schedule from the beginning. I am not sure if there is indeed a schedule that needs to be maintained while working on the thesis, but I would like some information regarding how the entire duration of MS is affected by the thesis. Can you shed on some light on that? Also, do you have any idea regarding the recruitment of MS students into the industry? Prospects and such.

You have stated some valid points. What I was thinking about doing is take the scholarship, pay for the living expenses and continue on the program for 2 years or so. As the scholarship is promised to receive extension, given I maintain my GPA. If I do not receive any assistantships by the end of the second term or by the end of the first academic year and I have to continue on with my own expenses, I would opt for the Master's thesis. Graduate with a Master's degree and apply for a job or continue on with a PhD in another program. How does that sound?

Hey guys! It's been a while since I last wrote on the forum. I wanted to tell you guys that I received a full tuition waiver for the previously unfunded PhD offer in Computer Science. However, I still have to pay for health insurance and mandatory fees, rooming and boarding along with other accessories. Do you think I should continue on with accepting the admission and scholarship offer?

Hello, it seems that either the department people are too busy or they are not really interested in whether you join the program. In my opinion, you should join some other program. In my case, I am already in contact with the prof who is going to fund me as soon as she receives the allotted funds from the department.

Hello. I am in a similar situation, except I have an adviser who is supervising me from the 1st semester. My adviser said that no student in the university where I got admitted has graduated without funding. Funding is usually given after completion of a project or research paper. So I would advise you to contact potential advisers and discuss potential funding opportunities before accepting the offer.

Hey! I am in a similar boat as you. I have been offered a PhD position from one school and no further acceptances as well. The one school I got into is one of my top choices and the program ranks at #67 in the US. My POI told me that I would have to take up a teaching position if I enroll, which means I should receiving a TA. However, I have not been made any such offers. I was told that funding decisions are on going and will be declared by September. I have received the official letter of acceptance from the department, and they have stated that it's a self-funded offer and that I should let them know by April 15. What I plan on doing is waiting longer than April 15 and not letting them know of my decision. Since, those applicants who would not be attending this Fall are likely to decline the offer, funds are supposed to be relieved from them and reassigned to the unfunded ones like us. So, right now I am inquiring for the deadline extension for making a decision on the offer and then accordingly decide if I would go there or not. If not, then I would ask them to confirm funding for the next year and defer my admission.

I am waiting for April 15 to come by. The professor said that there is still a possibility that I could get funded before September. And as people start turning down offers from the school, funds could become available until then. Plus, if I don't receive funding, I would opt to take the Masters degree and pursue PhD somewhere else. Of course, if I don't get funding, I will be studying for 2 years on my own expenses.

I have zero expectations to hear from the other schools, which is why I am so keen on accepting this offer. I don't want to lose this offer just because I am waiting for the other schools to offer. No contact from the remaining schools so far. But if I do get a funded PhD, I won't accept the unfunded one.

My signature is the up-to-date list of schools with their responses. I have chosen to accept this particular program, as it's a perfect fit for me and it's one of my dream universities. I contacted my POI to learn that any form of funding could be available way before September and that she would keep me updated. And yeah, she is applying on my behalf and trying to get me funded for quite some time now. I do not expect to hear any sooner from the rest of the schools, which is why I don't want to lose the opportunity to go this school. Anyways, I have made up my mind to go ahead with the loan and everything and see if I can get funded in the later semesters, in case I don't make it at the time of entry.

I received an offer with currently no mention of any funding. My POI has stated that the funding evaluations are going on and the results will be out by mid-September. Do you think I should accept the offer? What I planned for is to take a loan for the first year and wait for the mid-September results. If I do get funded, I shall return the loan to the bank. However, if I do not get any funding, I am thinking of paying for the first year with the bank loan, study and apply to other schools for transfer with full funding. Do you think my strategy is viable?

My POI said that the funding evaluation results would be declared by mid-September. Classes usually start by September 21. So, being hopeful that it comes through. Although, I do have to get working on possible self funding.

I am currently in a similar situation. I got the offer, but the POI says she is working on getting me funding. Since, I have not received an official admission letter, I am hopeful that the funding comes through.

Wooooooohooooo! Feeling high. Just kidding. POI from Oregon state offered me a position in her research group for the PhD program! I don't care about the other schools anymore as this was one of my dream schools. But yeah, I am going here this Fall . So far 1 reject, 1 accept. 4 more schools to hear from No word on funding yet though. POI says she has been working on getting me funding for sometime and is still continuing to do so. Would be so rad if I can get that

Finally, received word from Tufts University. Didn't get in. Anyways, waiting for a offer from a much better program.

Just done submitting the programs that my POI asked for. Now, she wants me to submit a page long LaTeX on what I learnt from writing the programs. I am still worried that after doing everything that she's asked me to do, she would say NO at the end

So yeah, I have received only one call from the 6 schools that I applied to. My POI asked for a Skype meeting on the 4th of March, 2016. Tested the whole night on the 3rd of March 2016 to find a suitable camera for the Skype interview (Webcam is hideous). But during the interview, the POI asked me to turn off my cam, so that she can see the whole screen properly. Interview began on 4th at 4.00 PM PST. She talked to me about the weather at Oregon State University and asked about how it was at my place. I replied accordingly and I was asked to start off with my presentations. She asked me to prepare 2 presentations - one on a known topic and another on an unknown topic beforehand. I presented via screen share quite confidently. Upon completing the first presentation, she said that she really liked my presentation. She asked me to take a break if I wanted. I said that I wanted to continue. So off with the next topic and upon completion, she said that she liked the presentation of the second topic as well. Her voice sounded like she was impressed. After the presentations got over, she asked me 2 questions related to the project. The first was - "Did you enjoy preparing the presentations?", to which I replied "Yes". The second was - "Can you implement what you learnt in the form of a computer program?". I replied "Yes" again and then she went on to ask me questions about my transcript. My first 2 years were really bad during undergraduate studies. So she asked in a laughing tone - "What happened in the first 2 years? The later part of your undergraduate was really good. Were you enjoying too much?" I replied to her questions accordingly with a light mood at the same time. Then she went on to ask about if I worked anywhere and also went on to ask - "If you don't get admitted to grad school, then what are your future plans?". Once again I answered accordingly. She also asked me that if I was not working at a job, then how I would be financially supporting myself. And as usual, I answered. Upon completing the interview, which in my opinion turned out to be way better than what I was expecting, she said that once I submit my programs, she would let me know of the decision. It was more like she was asking me if it would be alright to let me know of the admission result after I have submitted the programs. So, I have submitted what she asked for and now I am waiting to hear from her. What do you guys think? Do I have any possible chance of getting an admit?

My brother applied for the MS in Journalism program with specific concentration in Sports Journalism. Although, he is preferring to go for Northwestern instead, as their sports journalism program is quite strong.

Whew! just finished preparing my first presentation for the Skype Interview. Not gonna start working on the second right now. I have little to no idea regarding the second topic. Got a 43 page research paper shoved down my face. Need to finish it and get a presentation ready under 2 days. Man, interviewing for a TA position is rigorous

My brother applied to NYU for MS in Journalism and he has received an unofficial accept from the graduate programs director, like 1 week ago. I guess they are rolling out the admissions. Hope you guys get in
