JustChill Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Am I the only Wisconsin admit on here who has not been contacted by the department yet? Find this extremely weird.
historycubicle Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Am I the only Wisconsin admit on here who has not been contacted by the department yet? Find this extremely weird. I also haven't been contacted by anyone at Wisconsin since I received the acceptance letter. Glad I'm not the only one...
PaulMcQ Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I'm curious as to what is going on with Rutgers. Were the two admits/one rejection misnomers?
eponymous Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I'm curious as to what is going on with Rutgers. Were the two admits/one rejection misnomers? I'd like to know, too. My application still reads "No Decision."
Nytusse Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Am I the only Wisconsin admit on here who has not been contacted by the department yet? Find this extremely weird. I am starting to get a bit nervous about that, also. Being accepted with funding and being accepted with no funding are COMPLETELY different things.
JustChill Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 True. I'm not that nervous about it because I'd rather attend UNC than Madison, but it seems strange to be officially accepted but not to hear anything from any professor. Some other schools email me way before they start making any decisions just to have some contact and see what I'm all about, but Madison is AWOL. Angelicasassy and Russophile 1 1

I got an email from the DGS saying I would receive information in a couple of days, but no contact by professors and still no mail. The website hasn't even changed to reflect that I'm admitted. I won't feel like I'm accepted anywhere until I get some actual details. By the way, I have a hunch some Harvard admits go out tomorrow. I'm in New England, and we are NOT covered in snow whatsover (for once).
cm125 Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I finally just wrote my potential advisor at Wisconsin an email saying I was grateful for the offer of admission and hoped that the funding situation would work out so that I could work with them next year. I didn't want to say anything until I heard something on the funding front, since I can not attend without it, but decided that I should at least establish some dialogue. And I'm glad I did since I heard back right away from the potential advisor. Didn't get any inside info, not that I was expecting it nor did I ask for it, but it still was nice to get in contact.

I'm one of the Wisconsin admits (full disclosure- I'm a little more likely to attend than others right now) but I've found the faculty very responsive since I was admitted, but they seem to be pretty busy individually. If you haven't had anyone reach out, it might be best to email or even call and leave a message.

That's exactly what I did today, too. I had emailed my potential advisor prior to applying a couple of times, so I hope that making contact helps. Wisconsin is a really good fit for me in terms of a near-perfect advisor, but I know I'm getting money elsewhere, so.... All I hear is how WONDERFUL Madison is, though. Seems like a great place to live.

Caligula Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 "All I hear is how WONDERFUL Madison is, though. Seems like a great place to live." Yeah, as long as it's not November, December, January, or February. I also hear great things about Madison. After Athens (and maybe Ann Arbor), it's supposed to be the best college town in America.

You're going to enjoy it a lot! It would be Professor Koshar. The Madison history department seems like a place where a person could be rather HAPPY. I think I might like that!

I like the idea of Ann Arbor a lot, but my husband is in mortal terror of the Michigan economy self-imploding.
Caligula Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 A valid concern. Michigan and California are both in a terrible state. Is there a pun here?
subrosa Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Not sure if this does more harm than good, but I hear wind from an inside source of Harvard coming out early next week. A little later than expected, but there it is. Oy.

A little later than expected, but there it is. Oy. Well, I think I have Monday off from school for Presidents' Day (don't ask me why). So, at least if I'm angry or sad, I can be angry or sad in my own home. I still feel like a couple of people might find out tomorrow, for some reason. And it seemed like UPenn would be this week, but they've been closed due to snow, who who knows?
bakabeth Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 May I ask, who is the Michigan admit? And what is your subfield? And congrats

I know how you feel. I really like Michigan, but (assuming the stars aligned properly and I got in) my girlfriend would never be able to find a job there. Although maybe Ann Arbor is in better/ more stable shape compared to other parts of Michigan? Edited February 12, 2010 by deuterides

quickbrownfox Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 May I ask, who is the Michigan admit? And what is your subfield? And congrats Not me, unfortunately. I thought someone said the Michigan admissions committee weren't meeting until next week?
TMP Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Not me, unfortunately. I thought someone said the Michigan admissions committee weren't meeting until next week? Must be "Other" aka non-Western field. They get less applications than others. As for Ann Arbor's economy, it is definitely better than the rest of the state. It's practically a bubble. It might take your GF some time to find a job but she'll eventually land one within Ann Arbor-Lansing-Detroit vicinity.

It might actually come in handy if things swing my way.
africanhistoryphd Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I had a fairly in-depth conversation with my Potential Adviser there about the financial state of the school and its actually in amazing shape. Their endowment is massive and have the most alumni of any US school so they're doing ok. Must be "Other" aka non-Western field. They get less applications than others. I wonder why they're deciding so late this year. Is it a funding issue, do people think?
