George J Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I have already started looking for apartments around a university that has not even accepted me yet.... does that make me crazy?
GunningForGrad Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Nope! Pretty sure that's totally normal. It's part of the research aspect and gives you something to focus on while you're waiting! hopefulPhD2017 1
scarvesandcardigans Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Agreed. Plus having a bit of an idea of what you're looking at will help you compare offers as far as cost of living, and you'll have to do less research later!
Jeewan Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Me too, seeing this post brought up a smile in my face. @George J
guest56436 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I don't think it makes you crazy...but a waste of time? Yes. Robbentheking and GunningForGrad 1 1

Charlsa Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I've already started looking up Korean restaurants in every city I applied. I need to set my priorities straight, but only after I know there will be bibimbap. abcde12345, hopefulPhD2017, csot and 2 others 5
rising_star Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Nah, I don't think it's crazy. It's only crazy if you do it at the application stage when you're on the academic job market, lol (and even then only because it's likely to be like 75+ places you'd have to look into).
GeorgeC07 Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Back in December, when I had just submitted all the applications and had nothing to do but wait, I checked the apartments around all the universities I applied to. And this was repeated time to time when I was really frustrated by the long wait. I'd say it's normal, and I found out that the students apartments around some schools were really nice at a reasonable price. This makes me expect life in the US even more.
sturdyelm Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 As many others have said, not crazy at all! I have done the same thing, especially given that it's a master's program with short turn-around times and lots of factors on decisions, so I need to get as much research in as possible, which includes cost of living. As long as you're not doing it every second of every hour, you're fine. And even if you are, whatever helps pass the time!
mathandcoffee Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 I've started investigating apartments in the areas of the schools I've applied to also. I figure I should at least have some idea what's available and for what price. Hopefully it will make the moving aspect a little easier once I know where I'm going.
