Oberon is an entirely different beast when had from the keg. I never cared much for the bottles of it but in a keg that stuff is what dreams are made of. I did not apply to CMU though I did meet several faculty of CmU who urged me to apply. Problem was - no funding for their MA and I wasn't sure I was a strong enough applicant OR ready intellectually to go straight to PhD ... Though I should have done it anyways.

To piggy back off of this. Some of the midwest phenomenon may be tied to the Morrill Act as well as GI bill - a lot of land grant colleges started putting out lots of people in tech roles. So was born "Engineering English - English for Engineers" - perhaps this has causal relation to the critical examination of composition pedagogy. So here we have a bunch of new students who need to learn to write but don't respond well to the classics. There are certainly pockets of strong rhet focus elsewhere but the midwest is sort of our American Manger.
