  1. :-D Of course I remember! I have a confession to make: I like people - all people. This admiration for people manifests in a completely involuntary collecting of information. I'm not great with names. Yet, if someone mentions their favorite artist or tv show, or they tell a story about their mother and a farm animal... I have no choice but to remember it and fill out some sort of schema. *Sigh* such is life.
  2. No - it's already on your C.V. you don't need to add the newspaper announcement. Probably. Intellectual/academic work doesn't need to be locked up for only those in the academy. If you've found a way to make your research interests relevent and understandable to the public - kudos to you! There is a bit of a lengthy debate on public intellectuals. I certainly think it is an honorable aim. So if you think the work fills out the picture of who you are (i.e. a wonderful research who is also able to communicate with the lay-public) then yes! certainly list it.
  3. Bumping to say: I hope Proflorax rings in. I remember Proflorax sharing their eye-opening experience when visiting Maryland. If memory serves me correct, Maryland wasn't the frontrunner but after visiting "it just felt right". I'd suggest reaching out to the fuzzy seussian.
  4. NSA? They might be able to tell you.
  5. On the topic of fallacy. Causal or correlational? Variables? Could it be the instructors enjoy teaching lit and engage the students differently because of this?
  6. Any of us can change the world.
  7. Generally my sub-field is exempt from the silly subject test- but I did notice some schools required it. Gah!!!!! Why? I'm all for knowing more - but hell, that shit is expensive
  8. Rankings: how important are they? As important as you make them.
  9. Don't let it bother you. They probably just really hate High School Musical
  10. This isn't an argument... You should see the philosophy boards. Gahhh. The drivel that drives them insane is remarkable.
  11. This is wonderful! (I hesitated to use" This. Is. Wonderful") I'm blogging this so everyone sees it. I'll attribute you!
  12. When I get stressed I like to howl. It's more primal than screaming. Arwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Give it a try.
  13. Change your university password to some sort of keyboard slam (e.g. "ourhy389hcoiashd") Copy and paste it into the "verify password" box and hit okay. Drink all weekend. Wait until IT can reset your password on Monday.
  14. No need to apologize - I was teasing on myself. So I'm leaning towards: quiet and busy weekend leading into a wild and very busy week. and some results - good or bad. Sigh. I'm not going to say that the angst from the "Applications 2014" thread has rubbed off on me... but, I'm feeling just a little bit nervous.
  15. My prophetic notification radar indicates 4-6 days. Bad news on Tuesday. Good news on Thursday.
  16. How many upvotes do I need to collect before I can turn them in for a prize?
  17. Shucks! Here I was focusing on myself. but GUYYYYS! I wanna play too!
  18. Proflorax... the 13th is a week away. Please, y'all. No advice about being cool and calm. I can self regulate (besides I'm busy as hell so I don't have time to be wired up) buuuuuuut - I can feel it. We're nearly there - nearly teetering on the edge. Lets hope this roller coaster ends well.
  19. That sounds interesting - I'd like to read/take a course on that. Memphis may not be a perfect fit - you seem to have focused your studies pretty well and the MA is a little more broad. But you can certainly be the judge of whether it is worth it or not to apply.
  20. I forget your interests. Annnnd as much as I'd like to keep it to myself so I have some chance of getting in... I just can't do it. Sooo, U.Memphis has a funded MA in several English fields. The deadline for assistantships is March 1st. It's sort of the ace up my sleeve - if no where else in the next few weeks I'll toss another application in.
  21. Waive the right - it allows the writer to be more honest and to speak openly without worrying about saying something that you may be offended by. Yes- I had Profs tell me, "write your own letter - I'll review it, jazz it up, and send it out." It was a terrible process.
  22. I've taken several gap years between high school and undergrad. I'm closer to 30 than I am to 25. So I'd like to get accepted and start working towards building my career. Or win the lottery and have fewer financial worries.
  23. Remember to take action shots of your teaching and use a bookshelf as a backdrop.
  24. I've got the lowest stats here - yay me! I've applied to less than 6 places - yay me! My sample is sophomoric, my SOP is naive, and most of my LORs arrived late. Triple yay! Am I nervous? Certainly. But I know why I'm doing it. I've got a very clear sense of self and... ya know what? Perhaps that's worth something. We shall see
