  1. I am sorry that the experience you had contacting your POI at CUNY was negative, but it was informative, as I thought it might be. I believe that you are making the right decision, and I am very pleased that you have decided to post your experiences in this thread for the benefit of others. That is awesome! I will definitely check in regularly to follow this. GOOD LUCK!
  2. Decision made. Stevens (SIT)

  3. This topic has become incredibly useful and informative; others may need this type of information in the future. I wonder if it couldn't be pinned by a moderator?
  4. FedEx today then resolution

      Ughhh. Didn't arrive. Tomorrow.

  5. I agree with Chai-latte and for the same reasons.
  6. http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGS_Resolution.pdf (from another thread) Is your university a signatory?
  7. I have heard this (PhD from UK not well regarded in US academia) multiple times in this thread. What is the source for this, and why would this be the case? I am asking out of ignorance. Since when is the academic quality of a an Oxford or a Cambridge undervalued in the international marketplace, of which the US is a part? Not discounting or questioning the responding posters, by the way.
  8. From the results board: CUNY John Jay Criminal Justice, PhD (F13) Interview via E-mail on 4 Feb 2013 American Applicant CUNY John Jay Criminal Justice, PhD (F13) Accepted via Phone on 16 Feb 2013 American Applicant Given these two entries, (they are the only ones for this year) I would contact the school and inquire. At this late date I would do this by phone. Good Luck.
  9. Full disclosure: I haven't had that discussion with my (safe) adviser yet.
  10. I face a similar choice, but in a different discipline than History. The safe choice (Ph.D. in my professional field) versus working with a world renowned scholar in a field that, though completely applicable, is new to me. The parallel I am making is CUNY (safe) vs. Cambridge. At Cambridge you would be pursuing your studies independently (a good model for the rest of your life as a scholar) and would have less "hand holding." These are positives, not negatives. Perhaps you should go out on a limb, and lay your cards on the table, and ask your CUNY adviser what he or she would advise you to do. You hold all the cards right now, so this could be very informative. Others might think differently, and I hope they chime in, but what your CUNY adviser says could tell you as much about CUNY and him or her as it would about the value of the offer from Cambridge. If you end up going to CUNY, your adviser would know that you made that choice. The consequences of that could be nothing but positive. If you go to Cambridge, your CUNY adviser would know that you are a straight shooter -- you won't necessarily be burning any bridges with him or her -- and you might even laying the groundwork for a future with that institution...
  11. Although the advice above seems solid, I thought I'd bump this thread to see if anyone had anything to add. I am considering Union City, NJ which is a 15 min bike/45 min walk from the SIT campus in Hoboken.
  12. I was under the impression that fewer international admits were offered in many Canadian programs. Is that true in your case? By the way, I went to Toronto for a conference last October and I ABSOLUTELY loved it.
  13. Ahhh, the politics of the search for truth.
  14. I am fascinated by David Harris and the Draft Resistance Movement. An even more interesting history would be that of those deserters and draft evaders who went to Canada and elsewhere, including the continued prosecution by the government after the war until Carter pardoned everyone one day into office in 1977. Many stayed in Canada, which impacted the politics there.
  15. Here's where the discussion we were having previously with respect to digital humanities -- specifically GIS -- could offer some insights..
  16. I'm gonna call it 2.5 out of 5.

  17. Hey guys, got my second fully funded acceptance (but neither are in History.) All results are in.
  18. In my opinion, you are making all the right moves. I would suggest that you focus primarily on your portfolio and your statement of purpose. 3 or 3.5 year MArch programs don't care about your level of experience with architecture or drafting. They want well-rounded, interesting candidates who display a level of criticality. If you can (and I assume you can) demonstrate your design sense in your portfolio then I think they will be very interested. Congratulations on deciding to pursue your first professional degree. Better yet -- do a new series inspired by your recent journey to the MArch that focuses specifically on light and form and have images from that series accompany your statement of purpose. They will love that because architecture professors are visual and it will motivate them to read your statement. Good luck!
  19. Bumping this thread. Any other (non-jail and prison designer) Ph.D. Architecture applicants out there? How about a roll-call of lurker acceptances?
  20. Primary sources. Either collect your own data and analyze it or go directly to original documents and analyze those. Policy formulation can, and usually is, based on secondary sources (other people's studies.) But don't take it from me... talk to professors in that program and compare the work products of both the policy paper and the thesis by finding them in the library. The good news is that you have time to conduct original research if you get on it now. By the way, it's not the title of the work that matters to those evaluating your writing sample, it is the nature and quality of the work that they care about.
  21. Sorry, your screen name includes the name Dave. I know your first name because we've PM'd so I was having some fun playing with the gendered issues surrounding "marriage" to ones adviser. It's Friday. Forgive me. I've written about 4,500 words in the last 36 hours and I need to "let my hair down."
