  1. A deus ex machina Latin: "god from the machine" is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved, with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object. Depending on how it's done, it can be intended to move the story forward when the writer has "painted himself into a corner" and sees no other way out, to surprise the audience, or to bring a happy ending into the tale. (Source: Wikipedia) Yes I did: UCI Criminology, Law and Society. Also Drew University for Intellectual History and Stevens Institute of Technology for Enterprise Systems. My research is focused on incarceration, but I am a jail and prison designer, so Architecture is my field. Confusing to me, too!
  2. I was killing an hour before I started driving cross country with my wife and kids to visit her elderly mom, who was not doing well. I found out I was accepted with full funding via email. So after we finally arrived we visited her mom and then the next day I visited with my POI (major adviser) at the school that accepted me. Jung called events of this nature synchronicity.
  3. I applied to the University of Kansas and the University of Washington for programs in Architecture. I was accepted with full funding to KU and rejected by UofW. I applied to three other related, but non-Architecture programs. I was rejected by one, rejected by the second but offered entrance into their Masters program and I am waiting on the third. The decision is, barring Deus Ex Machina, made, and I am very happy about it. So, now, what's your story?
  4. Please provide your concise story regrading your journey to the Ph.D. in Architecture.
  5. I am curious what New England Nat's take on Rogue856's question might be... ^
  6. Would the person accepted to the Masters program at ETH like to offer any information about the program and why they decided to study architecture in Switzerland. Oh, and is the program in Zuerich or Lausaunne?
  7. Jung called such things synchronicity. (private wink)
  8. The sad thing is that our broken immigration system precludes the possibility of these brilliant skilled graduates from staying in the United States in most instances, and that is OUR LOSS. Everyone benefits from having the most talented and knowledgable people at universities, no matter where they come from, and no matter their immigration status. Funding should be based on merit and merit alone, in my personal opinion.
  9. 3/4 with one "on deck." Nice batting average.
  10. Given that your field is Revolution/Early Republic US and you've been accepted to Temple with immediate access to all sort of archives relevant to your work, it seems to me that your future is not as constrained as you might be feeling it is after reading this thread. For God's sake if this is your calling, can you really walk away from it?
  11. Oh, and to add to the above... MArch programs are extreme time intensive, and that may be why you are only being offered .25 RA/TA positions. Another part time job might not be feasible. It might impact your workproduct and diminish the return you receive from the program (in terms of skills and intellectually) so take that into account as well...
  12. Difficult to provide advice without more specific information, but 9K for a .25 RA seems pretty good but only if it includes full tuition remission. These packages must be evaluated in the whole, and in full consideration of the cost of living at the various locations... Feel free to PM me if you'd like further input.
  13. That was the case for the majority of the programs I applied to. Because I was awarded the BArch instead of the MArch (long story) after three years of MArch coursework, I needed a masters degree to apply to PhD programs. I entered a masters program in Criminal Justice to address that deficiency and my company paid the tuition and books. It is germane to my specialty, and I learned a lot that will enhance my PhD research, so I am sort of glad I had to do it. By the way, at KU, everyone I met who was a PhD student was from overseas. Venezuela, Egypt, India, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and probably a few others I've forgotten. All the PhD students in the first year share one open office to build collaboration. Those selected for fellowships teach studios or TA for support classes. By the way, this is an open invitation for PhD applicants and especially those accepted to PhD programs to chime in...
  14. User name comes from wicked problems (Horst Rittel et al) like my topic: incarceration... Picture is of an old man with greying curly long hair, which seemed fitting somehow.
  15. To the recent Ph.D. admit at Texas A&M: Congratulations! Curious about your research topic. Healthcare? Professional experience?
  16. From much earlier: lafayette, on 25 Feb 2013 - 13:29, said: One last school and I'm done. Just going to call it a rejection because hey, it's a teeny department in a prestigious school and yup, I just wanna call it a day. Maybe they'll surprise me with an honorable mention waitlist.
  17. After months of reading posts about people's insecurities in the face of the application process, this thread has really gotten meaty once those insecurities have shifted onto placement issues. I appreciate this level of discourse. I also appreciate the generally civil tone of the discourse and the fact that most if not all of those posting have considered their positions and arguments thoroughly. Basically: Bravo!
  18. Thanks for the feedback. How did your discussions go with your POI (#1 and #2)?
  19. Results Board Said: Carnegie Mellon Architecture, Master Of Science In Building Performance And Diagnostics (MSBPD), Masters (F13) Accepted via E-mail on 11 Mar 2013 ♦ A 12 Mar 2013 Applying to MS programs at various schools after 10 years of work and teaching experience. CMU offered a bit of funding and a GAship that amounts to only 1K a year. Thrilled nonetheless! Could you please PM me? I have a couple of questions regarding your research interest(s). Thanks. And to the rest of the board, sorry for starting a thread just for this inquiry.
