  2. if you guys could indicate MArch, PhD etc it would be more informative.
  3. PhDreams: UCI visit day(s) recap? We're still curious even though we're rejects.
  4. FROM THE RESULTS BOARD: UCSB History, PhD (F13) Accepted via E-mail on 8 Mar 2013No mention of funding. Still in shock. Thought I struck out this season. CONGRATULATIONS!
  5. The Associated Press reports that the $50-million gift to the University of Michigan's MFA in creative writing "is believed to be by far the largest ever gift to such a program." Helen Zell is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she earned her bachelor's in English; her donation, however, will support creative writing, specifically, and at the graduate level. "What I've watched happen with the introduction of the Internet and media and blogging, I almost feel like this part of our education is under siege," Helen Zell told the AP. "The ability of fiction to develop creativity, to analyze the human psyche, help you understand people — its critical. It's as important as vitamins or anything else. To me, it's the core of the intellectual health of human beings." Michigan offers its graduate creative writing students a "Zellowship," a post-graduate year of financial support (currently $22,000) to focus on writing without the burden of further class study or teaching. The $50-million gift is intended to underwrite that program in perpetuity. Cross-posted in Literature, Rhetoric, and Composition.

  7. I am still interested in Dr. Fine's thoughts and observations. Can we get her blog authorized? Thanks.
  8. Quite correct. Just got back from a road trip and the rejection letter was in the mailbox. No hard feelings. Anyone who gets into this program and attends will be well served. I really liked everyone I spoke with including the graduate students who took the time to talk with me.
  9. A seminar on putting on snow chains*, multimedia no less... No, these kind of things are designed to give you a sense of the culture of the program. If you bond with these folks, you're much more likely to 1) say yes and 2) be happy once you get there... I just found out that my office at KU will be a shared one with 5-6 other new doctoral students -- designed to build collaboration and cohort/program 'culture.' UConn and ISU aren't exactly balmy per your previous desire to get somewhere more balmy than Minn.
  10. I have to commend everyone on their excellent advice and input for the original poster.
  11. Being able to attack something with intensity and focus under circumstances which support such behavior.
  12. Guess my reign as the oldest admit has ended. Just kidding.
  13. I am another, but who knows how many there are. It is easy to think of GradCafe as the whole universe, but there are plenty of applicants who don't even know it exists and an awful lot of lurkers who never post and then sweep in with post number one when they can't stand it anymore, even if they are concerned that the boards are monitored by the grad school police. No disrespect to anyone is intended, by the way! Everyone has their reasons. Few people post their scores when they post their results is one salient example. I am not holding out too much hope for UCI at this point, but won't email or call the graduate coordinator because I don't want to jinx it or hear bad news until I am psychologically insulated by some more acceptances. Ha Ha. If they do approach me with an offer, I have decided I will not let "not being in the first tier" prejudice me against the program when making my decision. My POI wasn't on the AdCom; nor are departmental agendas in her control, nor are they anything personal. So we wait...
  14. I think your credentials seem solid, and I think the internship with the planning department is a key indicator that you are serious about going into the field. I also did my first BA in Psyc. PM me and we can explore this further off the boards if you want.
  15. Sorry for the delay; extended roadtrip... GRE: V 163; Q 156; AW 5.5 Degrees/GPA: B.A. Psychology (Honors) 3.40 (University of Kansas) B.Arch Architecture 3.25 (University of Kansas) MAIS Criminal Justice 4.0 (Western New Mexico University) 15 years professional practice specializing in detention and corrections Seems odd that I would apply to my alma mater, but the top graduate of Georgia Tech's renowned space syntax and modeling program is my proposed advisor and two of the top people in facility performance evaluation are also there...
  16. University of Rochester Department: Dept. of History Address: 364 Rush Rhees Library Rochester, NY 14627-0070 Phone: 585.275.2053 Fax: 585.756.4425 Email: history.department@rochester.edu Web Address: http://www.rochester.edu/College/HIS/
  17. Accepted at University of Kansas Ph.D. in Architecture with full tuition remission and graduate assistantship.
  18. I sent you a personal message. You may not have it set up to send you an email, so just in case...
  19. Note the above, Lafayette. History of American Civilization is the program you applied to, right?
  20. On no other basis than your posts over the last several months, I will put my money down on last minute acceptance to said program for you.
  21. Czesc, Your point is well taken, and I agree with your assessment. When people argue that one should not only know one's era, but the era previous to that one in order to understand the complexities of how ones era emerged, my response is that if one intends to pursue a transtemporal (ala Armitage) topic then one must master all the relevant eras; in my case all of American History (writ large) at a minimum. Demonstrating such mastery should be attractive to the history marketplace, even if my research is very specialized and interdisciplinary. Further, one should, in my opinion, be very careful not to look at everything through the lens of ones topic for a multitude of reasons, most of which are scholarly but some of which are rhetorically based, given my ultimate goal of contributing to the public discourse in my area as a "public intellectual." Thanks for all your input. I appreciate it.
