  1. Another day begins again on the east coast ... is it bad that I’ve memorised the time differences for each of my schools so I know when (in my time zone) the working day begins?
  2. Congrats! Glad to hear of your success I’m an intl student so don’t know much about NCS but I hope it’s somewhere you’re happy with! I was actually logging in to ask again if anyone has heard from Emory? I’m now really paranoid that they’ve sent out invites and just no one has posted it on this forum This application cycle has turned from positive to negative so quickly this week, I feel so uncertain about everything and really nervous I just won’t get in anywhere.
  3. I’ve decided that the Yale application portal is the worst one. When I log in to check my status (wishful thinking!) it always says something like “you have started one application” so I always freak out that I forgot to submit it! However when I click through it’s clearly labelled as submitted ... but there’s always a moment of horror ...
  4. It depends! What do they say about funding? Do they support you to apply to scholarships and is there any chance that you could win a university prize or fellowship which would fund your Studies? My thoughts are that it’s better to get interview practice and make connections in the field, if there is any possibility of future help if you are admitted.
  5. Hi guys, as some of you know I’m looking for a job rn and have found a really amazing position, for which I have an interview next week. It’s a permanent role in health research, but it’s unlikely that I’ll know about any PhD spots before I hear back from them about whether I’ve got it. In your opinion, what are the ethics of not telling them I’ve applied for a PhD? And if I have heard back and have (fingers crossed) got a space, should I take the role? My old firm has offered me a six month admin role if I do get a PhD offer, so that I can save money, but obviously field research is better even if it means deceiving the company I’m working for ... what say you? Thanks ?
  6. Thanks @pinoysoc, I just meant that besides checking the pages to see all my documents have been received, there’s not really much point logging in every day as they’ll notify us by email to check the pages once they’ve made a decision ...
  7. Also dumb question but I’ve been assuming that I’ll get emails if my application status changes so I’ve not really been checking the pages ... is that bad?
  8. I’m on holiday rn and it’s terrible. We are exactly 12 hours ahead of the US so decisions come in overnight. I wake up expecting news and nothing
  9. Ah no worries! I haven’t applied but am always curious about interview conversion rates! Someone on the forum last year said that interviews (and especially interview weekends) are usually a good sign you’ve got it, unless you really can’t talk about your work or are just a terrible person. But not sure if that’s actually true
  10. Hey guys sorry to bring up Emory AGAIN but having stalked their social media, a storm in Atlanta has closed the university til Friday. Hoping for some news then. Could also affect other Atlanta universities too, I’m guessing?
  11. Congrats! Was that after an interview? Well done
  12. Thanks @2733amh that is useful. It just seems that they will have to inform candidates of their status soon for interviews and travel bookings, unless they aren’t doing interviews which would be a dream! Haha I can only hope (I’m an international candidate so interviews aren’t great for me as it’s skype based rather than a visit weekend)
  13. Yeh, I mean the results survey isn’t perfect but it really is a good idea to look at that to get a sense of when schools might reply. Some of them certainly track the same few days for a few years, which is useful to know
  14. Guys where is Emory? No postings for interview invites but they say the interviews are early Feb ... I’m so nervous I have terrible insomnia

Hey! Haven’t heard from any of them (also applied to Berkeley). You might find more people talking about it in this thread as well? Good luck!
  16. Thanks Qeta. I've applied to UCB but I'm really not holding out for good news haha. But any news from any of my schools would be so welcome! I just found out that there's a perfect studentship for me at a UK university (a studentship is a fully funded place where, almost like a job, you apply to work on a project and support that with your own research, rather than designing a full independent research project). It's basically the exact niche field of research that I've listed on my SoP for American universities, so I'm back on the application treadmill from today! At least it's keeping me busy ...
  17. Hey Americans! Quick question - does MLK day on Monday mean that universities are closed?
  18. Yes congrats to the UCLA admit! Can I assume that all UC schools respond at different times, or will we start hearing back from other UCs soon?
  19. http://www.slate.com/articles/life/culturebox/2012/04/grad_school_admissions_grad_cafe_exposes_gen_y_s_job_search_angst_.htm Might be helpful for all of us! ?
  20. I'm guessing we're applying to the same school then haha. Good luck with getting through the waiting period! I have to say that I don't think there's such thing as a safety school, so I wouldn't worry too much about that! I only applied to schools where I could see myself living and working, engaged in the department, local community, and I feel so much better about the applications, rather than applying to a few extra random schools "just in case". Sure, some of my schools are ranked higher than others, and maybe they vary in required GPA averages or GRE score rates. But I applied because I love the schools, not because I thought they'd be easier to get into. I realised that my schools vary from top 5 to top 50 but they're all equal in how much I want to go! Also, you don't know who you're competing against in any situation, and it's still all about departmental fit. TL;DR - we all worry too much
  21. Me three! My dissertation thesis is so different to the second writing sample, so hopefully it will help a little bit ... I'm really nervous as this is the weekend that my top choice releases interview requests (2017 - 15th Jan, 2016 - 17th Jan, etc). Honestly I wish I was religious so I had someone to pray to!
  22. Just saw a Rutgers interview posted on the survey page! Good luck
  23. I thought I'd chip in as I had a real dilemma recently about moving - after working overseas for nine months in country A, I had the opportunity to move with the same firm to country B (A's neighbour) for six months. Everyone told me to do it, as it was a great job, great location, guaranteed work. I turned it down to risk unemployment in my home city because I had such a gut feeling that it wasn't right for me to do now. So my advice to everyone is just to go with your gut sometimes, and remember that you can turn down opportunities! I'm currently two weeks into unemployment after my job finished, and looking for new jobs is stressful BUT ultimately I'm happier here than I would be elsewhere, even if my acquaintances think I'm crazy - and I say acquaintances because your real friends and family will support your decisions. That isn't to say to the OP that moving is bad! Far from it - I loved my nine months overseas and am gearing up to hopefully do 6 years overseas for this PhD. Just listen to your gut feelings when the time is right
  24. I'm having a stressful day! Just logged into Brown to see that they're waiting for my TOEFL/IETLS scores. As I'm an English-speaking, England-originating, two-degrees-from-well-known-English-universities kinda gal, I'm not sure why this has come up. I'm assuming it's just a system error now but hopefully it's not delaying any reviews of the applications. I've emailed the grad email account to ask for help. It's so frustrating behind ahead of the US, I never get any replies til early afternoon my time!
  25. Yay @RoxieB! Congrats on a great place! Fingers crossed we can all do some crying-screaming soon
